EasyStart Installation Guide for Lennox and Similar HVAC Units

Diagram Description

This document outlines the wiring diagram and installation procedure for the EasyStart device, designed for use with Lennox and similar HVAC units. The diagram illustrates the electrical connections between various components of an air conditioning or heat pump system, including the outdoor fan, dual capacitor, compressor, compressor contactor, and control systems.

Key components shown include:

  • Outdoor Fan: Connected via Purple, Black, Orange, Red, and Yellow wires.
  • Dual Capacitor: Features terminals labeled F (Fan), C (Common), and H (Hermetic/Compressor).
  • Compressor: Has terminals for Run (R), Common (C), and Start (S).
  • Compressor Contactor: An electromagnetic switch that controls power to the compressor. It has terminals for the control coil (e.g., Y1, C) and power connections (L1, L2, R, C, S).
  • Ground Lug: For safety grounding.
  • Crankcase Heater: A component to warm the compressor oil.
  • Timed Off Control (A4): A control module, potentially for defrost or post-operation cycles.
  • Switches: Including High Pressure Switch (S4), Loss of Charge Switch (S24), Crankcase Thermostat (S40), Low Pressure Switch (S87), and Thermal Protection Switch (S173).

Power is supplied via L1 and L2 (208-230V/60/1). The diagram details how these lines connect to the contactor, which then switches power to the compressor and other components. Various safety and control switches are integrated into the circuit. The EasyStart device is shown to connect to specific terminals on the compressor contactor and the run capacitor, with specific wire colors (Black, Orange, Brown, White) used for installation.

A red '[X]' symbol indicates a connection that needs to be removed during installation. The diagram also notes connections for a 24 VAC power source and indicates optional components with specific symbols.

EasyStart Installation Steps

  1. Before Easy Start installation! All connectors used must be 600VAC rated! If present in your system all start component connections and wires need to be removed.
  2. Put Easy Start Black with compressor common (BLACK) on the contactor behind the screwhead using a fork or ring terminal connector.
  3. Put Easy Start Orange on the run-capacitor Herm (H) position.
  4. Remove compressor run (RED) from the contactor [see red X] and Splice to Easy Start Brown. NOTE: The wire between the contactor and the run-capacitor common remains untouched, unused and nothing connected at either end!
  5. Where you removed the last connection Put Easy Start White on the contactor behind the screwhead using a fork or ring terminal connector.

Notes

NOTE: IF ANY WIRE IN THIS APPLIANCE IS REPLACED, IT MUST BE REPLACED WITH WIRE OF LIKE SIZE, RATING, INSULATION THICKNESS, AND TERMINATION.

NOTE: FOR USE WITH COPPER CONDUCTORS ONLY. REFER TO UNIT RATING PLATE FOR MINIMUM CIRCUIT AMPACITY AND MAXIMUM OVERCURRENT PROTECTION SIZE.

JUMPER IS USED WHEN TOC IS NOT USED.

S173 SWITCH USED ONLY IN UNITS EQUIPPED WITH COMPRESSORS WHICH DO NOT INCLUDE INTERNAL SWITCH.

S173 TO S87 WHEN A4 IS NOT USED.
