Child Safety
General Information
Always secure children in appropriate safety restraints based on their height, age, and weight. Consult NHTSA (1-888-327-4236, www.nhtsa.dot.gov) or Transport Canada (1-800-333-0371, www.tc.gc.ca) for certified technicians and resources. Never leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle, as temperatures can rise rapidly.
Recommendations for Safety Restraints for Children
- Infants or toddlers (up to 40 lb / 18 kg): Use a child safety seat (infant carrier, convertible seat, or toddler seat).
- Small children (outgrown child seat, < 4 ft 9 in / 1.45 m, 40-80 lb / 18-36 kg): Use a belt-positioning booster seat.
- Larger children (outgrown booster seat, ≥ 4 ft 9 in / 1.45 m, > 80 lb / 36 kg): Use the vehicle safety belt with the lap belt low across hips and shoulder belt centered.
Many jurisdictions require booster seats until age eight, 4 ft 9 in (1.45 m) tall, or 80 lb (36 kg). Children 12 and under are safest in rear seating positions.
Installing Child Restraints
Child Seats: Use appropriate seats for infants and toddlers. When using lap and shoulder belts, ensure the belt is securely fastened and in automatic locking mode for child seats. The vehicle does not require a locking clip. Ensure the seat is securely installed with no more than 1 inch (2.5 cm) of movement.
Using Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH): Your vehicle is equipped with LATCH lower anchors at marked seating positions. Follow child restraint manufacturer instructions for installation. Top tether anchors are also available. LATCH anchors are spaced 11 inches (28 cm) apart. Two child restraints can be installed using LATCH in outboard positions, or one in the center with seatbelts. Tether straps should be used for forward-facing seats.
Booster Seats: Use for children who have outgrown child safety seats. Ensure the vehicle's lap and shoulder belts fit properly: lap belt low on hips, shoulder belt centered on chest. Booster seats should be used until the child can sit properly with the vehicle's seatbelt alone.
Child Restraint Positioning: Always follow manufacturer instructions. Never place a rear-facing child restraint in front of an active airbag. Children 12 and under should be in the rear seat. Unoccupied child seats should be restrained.
Child Safety Locks: Located on the rear edge of each rear door. Turn counterclockwise to lock (left side) or clockwise to lock (right side) from the inside. The doors can only be opened from the outside when locked.
Seatbelts
Principle of Operation
All occupants must wear seatbelts. Seatbelts work with airbags to enhance safety. Seatbelt components include lap and shoulder belts, pretensioners, height adjusters, and warning systems. Seatbelt pretensioners tighten belts in frontal or side crashes.
Fastening the Seatbelts
Insert the belt tongue into the buckle until it clicks. Press the release button to unfasten. For pregnant women, position the lap belt low across hips and the shoulder belt across the chest.
Seatbelt Locking Modes
Vehicle Sensitive Mode: Locks during sudden stops or impacts. Pulling the belt out too quickly also activates locking.
Automatic Locking Mode: Shoulder belt automatically pre-locks and retracts. Used for child seat installation. To engage, pull the entire belt out, then allow it to retract. To disengage, unbuckle and allow the belt to retract fully.
Seatbelt Height Adjustment
Adjust the shoulder belt height so it rests across the middle of the shoulder. Press the button to slide the adjuster up or down, then ensure it locks.
Seatbelt Warning Lamp and Indicator Chime
A light and chime alert the driver if the seatbelt is unbuckled when the ignition is on. The system turns off once the belt is fastened.
Seatbelt Reminder (Belt-Minder™)
This feature provides intermittent audible and visual reminders if seatbelts are unbuckled while driving. It can be activated/deactivated via the information display, unless MyKey is active. Deactivation is not recommended.
Child Restraint and Seatbelt Maintenance
Periodically inspect seatbelts and child restraint systems for damage. Replace any damaged components. Inspect all seatbelt assemblies after a crash.
Seatbelt Extension
Extensions are available from Ford dealers for individuals who do not fit the standard seatbelt properly. Never use extensions for child restraints or with inflatable seatbelts.
Personal Safety System™
The Personal Safety System enhances frontal crash protection by analyzing occupant conditions and crash severity to adapt safety device deployment, including dual-stage airbags and seatbelt pretensioners.
Supplementary Restraints System (SRS)
Principle of Operation
Airbags are supplemental restraints designed to work with seatbelts. They deploy rapidly and can cause injury. Maintain proper seating position, keep airbag areas clear, and never place children in front of active airbags. Do not attempt to service the SRS components yourself.
Driver and Passenger Airbags
Frontal and near-frontal crashes deploy driver and passenger airbags. Maintain at least 10 inches (25 cm) distance from the airbag module by adjusting your seat rearward and reclining slightly.
Front Passenger Sensing System
This system detects occupants and enables/disables the front passenger airbag. It typically disables the airbag for unoccupied seats, child restraints, or booster seats. The passenger airbag status indicator (ON/OFF) is located in the center stack. Always restrain children in the rear seat.
Side Airbags
Located in the outboard sides of front seatbacks, these deploy in certain sideways crashes. Do not place objects near airbag covers or use accessory seat covers, as they can interfere with deployment.
Safety Canopy™
Deploys in certain side crashes or rollover events, inflating between the window and occupants. It is mounted to the roof side rail.
Crash Sensors and Airbag Indicator
Sensors provide data to the restraints control module. The readiness light in the instrument cluster indicates system status. If the light flashes or stays on, or if audible warnings occur, have the system serviced immediately.
Airbag Disposal
Airbags must be disposed of by qualified personnel; contact an authorized dealer.
Keys and Remote Controls
General Information on Radio Frequencies
The remote control operates on radio frequencies and may be affected by weather, nearby towers, structures, or other vehicles. Interference from other radio transmitters can also affect range. Typical range is 33 ft (10 m).

The system has specific conditions for operation (e.g., ignition off, hood closed, transmission in Park). To start: Lock doors, then press remote start button twice. Engine runs for 5, 10, or 15 minutes.
Replacing a Lost Key or Remote Control
Replacement keys and remote controls can be purchased and programmed by an authorized dealer.
MyKey™
Principle of Operation
MyKey allows programming restricted driving modes to promote good habits. Admin keys are unrestricted. MyKeys can have speed limits, speed reminders, audio volume limits (45%), and driver assist features forced ON (e.g., parking aid, BLIS, lane keeping). Belt-Minder is always ON.
Creating a MyKey
