What is Z-Wave?
This device utilizes Z-Wave wireless communication, the international standard for smart homes and buildings. It operates on 868.42 MHz (EU) or 908 MHz (US) frequencies, ensuring stable and secure communication between diverse devices. Z-Wave communication is reconfirmed (two-way) and mains-powered nodes can act as repeaters in a meshed network.
Z-Wave differentiates between Controllers (C) and Slaves. Slaves are sensors (S) transmitting data or actuators (A) performing actions. Controllers are static mains-powered units, gateways, or mobile battery-operated remote controls (R). This enables various communication patterns within a Z-Wave network.
Communication patterns include:
- Controllers control actuators.
- Actuators report status changes to controllers.
- Sensors report status changes to controllers.
- Sensors directly control actuators.
- Actuators control other actuators.
- Remote controls send signals to static controllers for scenes or actions.
- Remote controls control other actuators.
Product Description
The Z-Wave.Me Key Fob (KFOB2) is a Z-Wave device capable of controlling other Z-Wave devices and activating predefined scenes in an IP gateway. While it controls other devices, the KFOB cannot function as a Z-Wave network controller (primary or secondary) and requires an existing Z-Wave network for inclusion.
The device supports various modes selected by configuration parameters:
- Control of Z-Wave device groups using ON, OFF, and Dim commands.
- Control of nearby devices using ALL ON or ALL OFF commands.
- Control of a specific device using ON and OFF commands.
- Activation of predefined scenes in gateways or other Z-Wave devices.
Installation Guidelines
The device ships with a battery pre-installed. By default, it is not part of any network; button presses will result in a long red blink, indicating an error or factory default/exclusion state.
To change the battery, remove the three screws on the back. Ensure the white rubber aligns correctly with the silver buttons during reassembly.
The device operates in two modes:
- Operation Mode: Controls other Z-Wave devices or activates scenes.
- Management Mode: Activated by pressing all four buttons for 5 seconds (indicated by a blinking green LED). In this mode, buttons have different functions. It times out after 10 seconds of inactivity or immediately after any action.
Actions in Management Mode:
- Button 1: Network Wide Inclusion. Allows inclusion from any network location if the primary controller supports Explorer Frames. Lasts 20 seconds or until a button press.
- Button 2: Send Node Information Frame and Wake Up Notification.
- Button 3: Standard Inclusion/Exclusion Mode. For inclusion/exclusion within direct wireless range. Any button press stops the mode. Exclusion resets the device to factory default.
- Button 4: Association Set. Assigns target devices to association groups. Refer to the association section for details.
Behavior within the Z-Wave Network
Initially, the device is not part of any Z-Wave network. Inclusion is required to join a network, and Exclusion allows devices to leave. The primary controller initiates these processes. Ensure the controller is in inclusion or exclusion mode for the device to join or leave. Exclusion resets the device.
Z-Wave offers two inclusion types:
- Standard Inclusion: Requires physical proximity (a few meters) between the controller and the device.
- Network Wide Inclusion: Allows inclusion from any network location with a wireless connection to an included device, provided both support explorer frames.
If the device is already in a network, perform exclusion before inclusion to avoid failure. To include via standard mode, put the controller in inclusion mode, then activate management mode on the Key Fob and press Button 3. For Network Wide Inclusion, activate management mode and press Button 1.
Operating the Device
The Key Fob's operation depends on configured button modes and command sets.
Button Modes
- Control with two groups of two buttons (Default): Button 1/3 control one group, Button 2/4 control another. A click turns loads ON (larger button) or OFF (smaller button). Double clicks (if enabled via parameters #1 or #2) control additional groups (3 and 4).
- Dimming: Achieved by holding buttons (Dim UP: Buttons 1/2, Dim Down: Buttons 3/4). Click + Hold also works if double-click is enabled.
- Control with single buttons: A single button controls a group. Single click for ON, double click for OFF. For dimmers, holding down dims up, click and hold dims down. The group number corresponds to the button label.
Control Commands
Configuration parameters #11-#14 specify button actions.
Direct Control of Associated Devices
Default mode (1) uses Basic ON/OFF and Dim Start/Stop commands for associated devices, implementing communication pattern 7. Parameter value 2 disables dimming.
Control of Devices in Proximity
Sends Basic ON/OFF and Dim Start/Stop commands to the nearest Z-Wave device (50-100 cm). Caution: May affect multiple nearby devices. Implements communication pattern 7.
Control of Neighboring Devices
Uses 'ALL ON' and 'ALL OFF' commands sent as broadcast to devices in direct wireless range. Devices respond based on their 'Switch ALL' settings. Implements communication pattern 7.
Simple Scene Activation
Associated devices are controlled via Z-Wave 'Scene Controller Configuration' commands. One scene number per association group (default matches group number). Implements patterns 6 and 7. Used for activating scenes in gateways or other scene-capable devices.
Enhanced Scene Activation
Each button action can trigger a scene activation command with a dedicated number (two digits: group number + action digit). Possible actions:
- 1 = On
- 2 = Off
- 3 = Dim Up Start
- 4 = Dim Down Start
- 5 = Dim Up Stop
- 6 = Dim Down Stop
Example: Button 1 click triggers scene 11 (group 1, action 1). Button 1 double-click triggers scene 12 (group 1, action 2). Implements communication pattern 6.
Child Protection
Enables a child protection mode that disables local operation. This mode must be activated wirelessly. In a protected sequence mode, pressing any button for 5 seconds temporarily unlocks the device for 5 seconds.
Wakeup Intervals - How to Communicate with the Device?
This battery-operated device enters deep sleep to conserve power, limiting communication. A static controller (C) is needed in the network to maintain a mailbox for commands received during sleep. Without it, communication may fail, and battery life decreases.
The device stays awake for 2.5 seconds after inclusion for configuration. Manual wake-up is possible by pressing Button 2 in management mode.
A minimum wakeup interval of 240 seconds is recommended for battery status reporting or child protection updates. Setting Node ID to 0 disables periodic wakeup. Setting Node ID to 255 sends broadcast wakeup notifications, increasing sleep time and battery drain but notifying neighbors.
Node Information Frame
The Node Information Frame (NIF) acts as a device's business card, containing its type and capabilities. It confirms inclusion/exclusion and is used for network operations. Pressing Button 2 in management mode sends a NIF.
LED Control
LED indicators provide feedback:
- Confirmation: Green for 2 seconds.
- Failure: Red for 2 seconds.
- Button Press Confirmation: Green for 0.25 seconds.
- Waiting for Network Management Mode Selection: Green blinks.
- Waiting for Group Selection in Association Set Mode: Fast green blink.
- Waiting for NIF in Association Set Mode: Green-red-off blink.
Associations
Z-Wave devices can control each other through associations. The controlling device maintains lists (association groups) of devices that receive commands upon specific events (e.g., button press). All devices in a group receive a common command.
Association Groups
Group | Trigger |
---|---|
1 | Button 1 or single clicks of buttons 1 and 2 (max 8 nodes) |
2 | Button 2 or double clicks of buttons 3 and 4 (max 8 nodes) |
3 | Button 3 or single clicks of buttons 1 and 2 (max 8 nodes) |
4 | Button 4 or double clicks of buttons 3 and 4 (max 8 nodes) |
IP gateways receiving scene activation commands must be added to all association groups.
Set and Unset Associations to Actuators
Associations can be managed via Z-Wave commands or the device itself. To control a Z-Wave actuator, its Node ID must be assigned to an association group. This is a three-step process:
- Activate management mode on the Key Fob (press all buttons for 5 sec, LED blinks green) and press Button 4 within 10 seconds.
- Within 10 seconds, press the Key Fob button that will control the actuator. Single click adds to the group; double click removes the selected node. The device sleeps after 10 seconds.
- Within 20 seconds, find the target Z-Wave actuator and trigger its Node Information Frame (e.g., by pressing a control button one or three times). Consult the actuator's manual for NIF issuance. Any Key Fob button press terminates the process.
