Studiologic SL-1100 MIDI Controller: Instruction Manual

Quick Reference

The Studiologic SL-1100 is a versatile MIDI controller designed for both live performance and studio work. This manual provides instructions for its operation.

Key Features:

Basic Setup:

  1. Connect the power adapter to the SL-1100 and a power outlet. Ensure the adapter's voltage matches your line voltage.
  2. Connect MIDI cables to your sound modules or other MIDI devices before powering on.
  3. Apply power to the SL-1100, then power on all other MIDI devices.

Changing Presets: Ensure the unit is in Perform Mode (no blinking lights). Press any of the four PRESET switches. Use the left/right arrow switches to change banks (8 banks of 4 presets each).

Editing Presets: To edit a preset, enter Edit Mode by pressing and holding a ZONE switch, then pressing a FUNCTION switch. The selected ZONE switch will blink. Adjust parameters using the CSL/DATA slider. Press the blinking ZONE switch to exit Edit Mode. Changes are saved automatically.

Demonstration Presets

The SL-1100 comes with four factory demonstration presets (locations 11-14) to showcase its capabilities. These presets are intended for use with multi-timbral sound modules that can respond to MIDI data on channels 1-4.

SL-1100 Specifications

Basic Information

The SL-1100 serves as a master controller for MIDI instruments and accessories. Its MIDI input allows flexibility in multi-keyboard setups, merging data into its two MIDI outputs. Four programmable keyboard zones offer quick and easy control over essential functions. The large three-digit LED display shows the current preset and parameter data. All programmable parameters are accessible via the four ZONE switches and the four FUNCTION switches. The SL-1100 can control up to sixteen MIDI channels, with simultaneous keyboard control of four channels. The two parallel MIDI outputs provide a convenient way to connect multiple MIDI devices without the need for MIDI splitters or routers.

Back Panel Connections

The MIDI Input receives messages which are merged with keyboard zone data and sent to the two parallel MIDI outputs. These messages can include:

The SL-1100's 32 internal presets can be loaded from an external computer or storage device via MIDI System Exclusive. The MIDI output of the SL-1100 can be connected to the MIDI input of another device. The SL-1100 can access up to 16 MIDI channels under preset control. Presets can be saved to an external device via MIDI output.

Control Voltage Inputs: An input is provided for an external analog controller (e.g., a pedal). The input voltage range is 0-5V DC, corresponding to a MIDI control range of 0-7F hex. The pedal can control master volume or be programmed for any MIDI control change message.

MIDI System Configuration

The illustration shows a typical MIDI setup for live performance, with the SL-1100 controlling three sound modules. Sound Module 1 is multi-timbral and responds to MIDI channels 1-8. Sound Module 2 is two-part multi-timbral, responding to channels 9-10. Sound Module 3 is not multi-timbral, responding to channel 11. This setup allows independent access to each sound module's channels.

Diagram Description: A MIDI connection diagram illustrates the SL-1100 keyboard connected via MIDI OUT to the MIDI IN of Sound Module 1, Sound Module 2, and Sound Module 3. A control pedal and sustain footswitch are also shown connected to the SL-1100.

Zones

The SL-1100 features four independent keyboard zones. Each zone can control a different sound via a unique MIDI channel. Zones can cover the entire keyboard or be limited to specific key ranges. The diagram illustrates an example of how different sounds might be mapped across the keyboard for a preset.

Diagram Description: A keyboard layout diagram shows four zones assigned to different instrument sounds: Piano (Zone 1, channel 5), Bass (Zone 2, channel 4), Strings (Zone 3, channel 8), and Flute (Zone 4, channel 12).

The relationship between zone number and MIDI channel is arbitrary and can differ between presets. Using consistent MIDI channel numbers for zones across all presets is recommended for easier setup.

Operation Modes

The SL-1100 operates in two modes: Perform Mode and Edit Mode. Switch and slider functions vary depending on the mode.

Zone Functions

Each keyboard zone has parameters that must be set to access desired sounds from a sound module.

Volume

Sets the initial volume level for each of the four keyboard zones. Use CSL/DATA slider to adjust. The Master Volume slider adjusts the overall volume for all zones, maintaining relative levels.

Transpose

Shifts the pitch of a sound up or down in semitones (+/- 2 octaves). Set using the CSL/DATA slider after pressing ZONE + FUNCTION 4.

Channel

Sets the MIDI channel (1-16) for each zone. Set via ZONE + FUNCTION 2 twice, then adjust with CSL/DATA slider.

Velocity

Adjusts the keyboard's dynamic sensitivity for optimal response. Set using CSL/DATA slider (-5 to +5) after pressing ZONE + FUNCTION 3 twice. The parameter affects how playing force translates to MIDI velocity values.

Diagram Description: A radial chart illustrates the relationship between playing force and MIDI velocity values for different Velocity Parameter settings (-5 to +5). It shows how parameter values influence the MIDI velocity output, with negative values enabling cross-fade effects.

CSL Control Slider

The left slider can be programmed to send any MIDI control change message. Set the controller number using ZONE + FUNCTION 4 twice, then adjust with CSL/DATA slider.

Wheels

The Pitch and Modulation wheels can be enabled or disabled for each zone. Set using ZONE + FUNCTION 2 three times, then adjust with CSL/DATA slider.

Aftertouch

Allows expressive musical control during a note via key pressure. Enable/disable aftertouch for a zone using ZONE + FUNCTION 3 three times, adjusting with CSL/DATA slider. Note: Not all sound modules respond to aftertouch.

Pedal

The pedal input can be programmed for volume control or any MIDI control change message. Set the controller number using ZONE + FUNCTION 4 three times, adjusting with CSL/DATA slider. The sustain input works with an external footswitch, sending MIDI CC #64. Enable/disable sustain via ZONE + FUNCTION 4 three times (while holding the pedal).

Miscellaneous Functions

These functions affect the instrument's overall operation.
