Connecting Your Keyboard
- Connect the included USB cable to a free USB port on your computer.
- Connect the other end of the USB cable to the USB input on the Keystation Mini 32 keyboard.
The single USB cable powers the keyboard and sends MIDI data to and from your computer.
USB Hub and iPad Considerations
If using a USB hub, ensure it has an external power supply. Passive USB hubs may not provide sufficient power if other devices are connected. Avoid connecting an audio interface to the same USB hub as the Keystation Mini 32.
The Keystation Mini 32 can also be used with an iPad to control supported music creation apps. This requires the iPad Camera Connection Kit, available from the Apple Store.
Getting Started
After installation, configure your music software to recognize the Keystation Mini 32. Open your software, and in the Preferences, Options, or Device Set-Up menu, select "Keystation Mini 32".
On Windows XP SP3, it may appear as "USB Audio Device". Windows Vista, 7, 8, and Mac OS X will recognize it as "Keystation Mini 32". Refer to your software's documentation for specific MIDI configuration details.
Keybed
The Keystation Mini 32 features a 2 1/2 octave keybed, approximately centered within the range of a full 88-note keyboard. The Octave Up/Down buttons allow access to the full 88-note range.
Key Features and Controls
Octave/Data Buttons (Oct/Data)
These assignable buttons shift the keyboard up or down by one octave (12 semitones) at a time, extending the playable range up to four octaves in either direction. The buttons are backlit in red by default. Pressing a button changes its color to indicate an active octave shift.
State | +1 Octave | +2 Octaves | +3 Octaves | +4 Octaves |
---|---|---|---|---|
OFF (Default Red) | GREEN | ORANGE | RED | RED Flashing |
OFF (Default Red) | -1 Octave | -2 Octaves | -3 Octaves | -4 Octaves |
To reset the octave shift to zero, press both the Octave "+" and "-" buttons simultaneously. The LEDs will return to a half-brightness red.
These buttons can be reassigned in Edit Mode. Refer to the full User Guide for details.
Pitch Bend Buttons
These assignable buttons bend the pitch of played notes up or down. They allow for expressive phrasing, similar to guitar-style playing. The extent of the bend depends on your sound source, typically +/- two semitones. Consult your sound source documentation for range adjustments. These buttons can also be reassigned in Edit Mode.
Modulation Button
This button replaces a traditional modulation wheel, mimicking its action. Pressing it adds vibrato or other modulation effects. It is MIDI-assignable, with a default MIDI CC of 1 for Modulation. It can also be reassigned in Edit Mode.
Volume Knob
The Volume Knob controls the output volume of the notes played. It is assigned to MIDI CC message 7 by default but can be reassigned in Edit Mode. Ensure your MIDI hardware or software can receive MIDI Volume messages.
Sustain Button
The Sustain button allows notes to ring out after they are played, similar to a piano's sustain pedal. Pressing it engages sustain; pressing it again disengages it. Its behavior can be modified in Edit Mode.
Edit Button
The Edit button accesses advanced functions and allows for data entry. Pressing it activates Edit Mode, indicated by a blue light. Functions are selected using the keys. Edit Mode may exit automatically after a function is selected or when Cancel/Enter is pressed. The button light dims when exiting Edit Mode.
To change control functionality (e.g., Mod button, Volume knob):
- Press the Edit button (it will illuminate fully).
- Press the button for the control you wish to change (e.g., MOD).
- Use the numeric keys to enter the desired value, then press Enter.
- Press Cancel to exit Edit Mode without saving changes if an error occurs.
For more details on Edit Mode and advanced functions, consult the full User Guide.
Full Reset
To reset the keyboard to factory defaults:
- Ensure your computer is powered on.
- Power on the Keystation Mini 32 by connecting the USB cable from your computer while simultaneously holding down the Oct/Data "+" and "-" buttons.
