IDC777 Long Range Application Note

This document describes an experiment to estimate the range achievable with the IDC767 module when using an external antenna. This was a preliminary experiment to gather initial measurements. IOT747 believes that further research, including antenna selection and layout optimization, could lead to improved performance.

Summary

Two IDC777-DISKIT units were modified to support an external UFL antenna. The IDC777 module underwent manual modification to reroute the 50 Ohm terminated RF endpoint to a UFL connector, to which an off-the-shelf antenna was attached. The estimated power output from the antenna was approximately 15dBm.

Range measurements were conducted using two IDC777-KITs and an iPhone SE (running iOS 17.5.1). The tests took place outdoors, in line of sight, within a partially occupied car park during light drizzle. All devices were positioned 1.50 meters above ground level. The achieved ranges varied between 80 meters and over 150 meters, with line of sight being lost after approximately 120 meters.

Devices Used

The IDC777-DISKIT units were modified to direct the RF signal to a UFL connector. This modification is illustrated in the following descriptions:

Modification Description: A photograph shows an IDC777-DISKIT module with a UFL connector attached. A hand is pointing towards the connector labeled 'CON3', indicating where the antenna UFL cable is connected. The modification involves moving a component (R1) to another position (R2) to facilitate this connection.

Circuit Diagram Description: A circuit diagram illustrates the modification. It shows the IDC777 module's RF output being diverted to a UFL connector (CON3). Components like L3, C1, C2, R1, and EXTRF are labeled, with R1 being moved to R2 for the external RF connection.

Antenna and Setup

The UFL connector was attached to a 12dBi antenna purchased from Amazon. The cable loss for the connection was estimated at 3.5dB.

Antenna Connection Description: A photograph displays the setup with the IDC777-DISKIT connected to a 12dBi external antenna via a coaxial cable. The antenna has a magnetic base.

Test Environment and Results

The test was conducted in a parking lot. The results of the range measurements are presented below:

Bluetooth Scenario Range Comment
Classic iPhone to IDC777 - A2DP 80m Audio is clear then it cuts very quickly within 2m
Classic IDC777 to IDC77 - A2DP 120m Audio is clear then it cuts very quickly within 2m
LE Audio IDC777 to IDC777 - Auracast 180m Audio is clear then gets noisy but still OK within additional 50m
LE Audio IDC777 to IDC777 - Unicast 110m Audio is clear then it cuts very quickly within 2m

*Note: If line of sight is obstructed (e.g., by placing a body between the antenna and the device), the range is reduced by approximately 30m.
