Image Optimization

SmartImage

What is it?

SmartImage provides presets that optimize display for different types of content, dynamically adjusting brightness, contrast, color, and sharpness in real-time. Whether you are working with text applications, displaying images, or watching videos, Philips SmartImage delivers excellent optimized monitor performance.

Why is it needed?

On a monitor that delivers all your favorite content optimized for display, SmartImage software dynamically adjusts brightness, contrast, color, and sharpness in real-time to enhance your monitor viewing experience.

How to use it?

SmartImage is Philips' proprietary and leading technology that analyzes the content displayed on the screen. Depending on what the user selects, SmartImage dynamically improves contrast, color saturation, and image sharpness to enhance the displayed content, all in real-time with a single button press.

How to use SmartImage?

  1. Toggle left to start SamrtImage from the display.
  2. Toggle up or down to select or deselect SmartImage modes.
  3. The SmartImage screen display will appear for about 5 seconds. Alternatively, toggle right to confirm.

Modes include: FPS, Racing, RTS, Gamer 1, Gamer 2, LowBlue Mode, EasyRead, and Off.

SmartContrast

What is it?

SmartContrast is a unique technology that dynamically analyzes the displayed content and automatically optimizes the monitor's contrast ratio for maximum visual clarity and enjoyable viewing, by dimming the backlight for darker images or increasing it for lighter images.

Why is it needed?

Users want the best visual clarity and comfortable viewing for all types of content. SmartContrast dynamically controls contrast and adjusts backlight for bright, clear, and vibrant gaming and video images, or displays clear, readable text for office applications. It also reduces the monitor's power consumption, saving energy costs and extending the monitor's lifespan.

How to use it?

When SmartContrast is enabled, it analyzes the content you want to display in real-time, adjusts colors, and controls backlight intensity. This feature dynamically enhances contrast for an excellent entertainment experience when watching videos or playing games.

Adaptive Sync

GPU and monitor updates at different rates have long caused imperfections in PC gaming. Sometimes, the GPU can render many new images in the time it takes the monitor to update just once, and the monitor displays parts of each image as a single image. This is called "tearing." Gamers can solve tearing with a feature called "v-sync," but this causes the monitor to wait for the GPU to deliver new images, resulting in choppy images.

Mouse input response and overall frame rate per second are also reduced by v-sync. AMD Adaptive Sync technology solves all these problems by allowing the GPU to update the monitor the moment new images are ready, resulting in incredibly smooth, responsive, and tear-free gaming.

Compatible graphics cards have been released subsequently.

Customer Care and Warranty

Philips Flat Panel Monitor Pixel Defect Policy

Philips strives to supply products of the highest quality. We employ the most advanced manufacturing processes and strict quality control in the industry. However, it is not always possible to completely prevent pixel or sub-pixel defects in TFT monitor panels used in flat panel monitors. No manufacturer can guarantee that all panels will be free of pixel defects. However, Philips will repair or replace monitors with an unacceptable number of defects within the warranty limit. This guide describes the different types of pixel defects and defines the acceptable number of defects for each type. To qualify for repair or replacement under the warranty, the number of pixel defects in the TFT monitor panel must exceed the acceptable level. For example, there should not be more than 0.0004% of sub-pixel defects on the monitor. Furthermore, Philips applies higher quality standards for certain types of pixel defects or combinations of pixel defects that are more visible than others. This policy is valid worldwide.

Pixel and Sub-pixel

A pixel, or picture element, is composed of three sub-pixels: red, green, and blue. Multiple pixels form an image. When all sub-pixels in a pixel are lit, the three sub-pixels combine to form a white pixel. When all sub-pixels are off, the three sub-pixels combine to form a black pixel.

Types of Pixel Defects

Pixel and sub-pixel defects appear in various ways on the screen. Pixel defects fall into two main categories, and each category has several types of sub-pixel defects.

Bright Dot Defects

Bright dot defects appear as pixels or sub-pixels that are always on or in the "on" state. That is, bright dots are sub-pixels that are prominently visible on the screen when the monitor displays a dark pattern. The following types of bright dot defects exist:

Note: Bright dots of red or blue must be more than 50% brighter than adjacent dots, and bright dots of green must be more than 30% brighter than adjacent dots.

Dark Dot Defects

Dark dot defects appear as pixels or sub-pixels that are always dark or in the "off" state. That is, dark dots are sub-pixels that are prominently visible on the screen when the monitor displays a light pattern. The following types of dark dot defects exist:

Pixel Defect Tolerance

To qualify for repair or replacement due to pixel defects, your Philips flat panel monitor's TFT monitor panel must have more pixel or sub-pixel defects than the tolerance levels specified in the following table.

Pixel Defect Proximity

The same type of pixel and sub-pixel defects that are close together are more noticeable, so Philips also specifies tolerance levels for the proximity of pixel defects.

Bright Dot DefectsAcceptable Level
1 lit sub-pixel2
2 adjacent lit sub-pixels1
3 adjacent lit sub-pixels (one white pixel)0
Distance between two bright dot defects *>15mm
Total bright dot defects of all types2
Dark Dot DefectsAcceptable Level
1 dark sub-pixel3 or less
2 adjacent dark sub-pixels2 or less
3 adjacent dark sub-pixels0

Note: 1 or 2 adjacent sub-pixel defects = 1 dot defect
