Out of the Box
Ensure your shipping box contains the following items:
- ScanPal EDA51 mobile computer (Model EDA51-0 or EDA51-1)
- Rechargeable Li-ion battery (Refer to page 7 for details)
- Hand strap (optional)
- Product documentation
If you ordered accessories, verify they are included. Keep the original packaging for potential service returns.
Note: EDA51-0 models do not include a WWAN radio.
Memory Card Specifications
Honeywell recommends using Single Level Cell (SLC) industrial grade microSD™ or microSDHC™ memory cards with ScanPal mobile computers for optimal performance and durability. Contact a Honeywell sales representative for information on qualified memory card options.

Front View
- Speaker: Audio output.
- Power Indicator: Shows device power status.
- Touch Panel: The interactive display.
- Home Key: Returns to the home screen.
- Return Key: Navigates to the previous screen.
- I/O Connector: For accessories and charging.
- Scan Status LED: Indicates scan success or failure.
- Volume Button: Adjusts speaker volume (up/down).
- Scan Button: Activates the scanner.
- Function Key: Programmable button.
- Microphone: For audio input.
- USB Cover: Protects the USB port.
Rear View
- Scan Engine: Captures barcode data.
- Speaker: Additional audio output.
- Battery Latch: Secures the battery cover.
- Battery Cover: Encloses the battery.
- Laser Safety Label Location: Information about laser safety.
- Camera Lens and Flash: For image capture and illumination.
Hardware Installation
Remove the Battery Cover
Follow these steps to remove the battery cover:
- Press the battery latch.
- Slide the battery cover.
- Lift the battery cover to open.
- Lift the battery out.
- Remove the battery.
Install a Nano SIM Card (Optional)
Only EDA51-1 (WWAN) models support Nano SIM card usage for cellular phone features.
Note: Always power off the computer before attempting to install or remove a card.
Description: Locate the SIM card slot and insert the Nano SIM card into the designated area, then secure the card cover.
Install a MicroSD Card (Optional)
Note: Format the microSD card before initial use.
Note: Always power off the computer before attempting to install or remove a card.
Description: Locate the MicroSD card slot and insert the card into the slot.
About the Battery
The EDA51 mobile computer is equipped with a Li-ion battery manufactured for Honeywell International Inc.

The Configuration Number (CN) is located on the label inside the battery well.
Recommendation: Use Honeywell Li-ion battery packs. Using non-Honeywell batteries may result in damage not covered by the warranty.
Caution: Ensure all components are dry before placing the battery in the computer. Mating wet components may cause damage not covered by the warranty.
Install the Battery
Follow these steps to install the battery:
- Insert the battery into the compartment.
- Align the battery correctly.
- Slide the battery cover into place.
- Push the battery cover down to secure it.
- Secure the battery cover latch.
Install the Hand Strap (Optional)
Follow the diagrams to attach the hand strap to the designated points on the mobile computer.
Charge the Mobile Computer
The EDA51 mobile computer ships with a partially charged battery. Charge the battery using an EDA51 Series charging device for a minimum of 4.5 hours. Charging while using the computer will increase the time needed for a full charge.
Recommendation: Use Honeywell accessories and power adapters. Using non-Honeywell accessories or power adapters may cause damage not covered by the warranty.
EDA51 mobile computers are designed for use with specific accessories: Single Charging Dock, Quad Bay Charge Base, Quad Battery Charger, and USB Cable. For more information, refer to the "ScanPal EDA51 Mobile Computer Accessories Guide" available at sps.honeywell.com.
Caution: Ensure all components are dry before connecting computers and batteries with peripheral devices. Mating wet components may cause damage not covered by the warranty.
Turn Power On/Off
The first time you power on, a Welcome screen appears. You can scan a configuration barcode or use the Wizard for setup. After setup, the Welcome screen is bypassed, and Provisioning mode is disabled.
To Turn the Computer On:
- Press and hold the Power button for approximately 3 seconds, then release.
To Turn the Computer Off:
- Press and hold the Power button until the options menu appears.
- Touch "Power Off".
Note: Always power off the computer before removing the battery.
Sleep Mode
Sleep mode conserves battery power by turning off the touch panel display and locking the computer after a period of inactivity.
- Press and release the Power button to wake the computer.
- Drag the [unlock symbol] ? towards the top of the display to unlock the computer.
Adjust the Display Sleep Time
To configure the display sleep timeout:
- Swipe up on the touch screen.
- Navigate: Settings > Display > Advanced > Sleep.
- Select the desired sleep time duration.
- Touch [home icon] ? to return to the Home screen.
About the Home Screen
The home screen displays key information and access points:
- Notification / Status Bar: Shows system alerts and status icons.
- Search Bar: For quick searching on the device.
- Home Screen Panel: Displays application icons and widgets.
- Favorites Tray: Quick access to frequently used apps.
Swipe up [up arrow] ⬆️ to access all applications.

About Provisioning Mode
After initial setup, Provisioning mode is automatically disabled. It can be re-enabled in the Settings app to install applications, certificates, configuration files, and licenses via barcode scanning.
Scan a Barcode with the Scan Demo
For optimal scanning performance, scan barcodes at a slight angle to avoid reflections.
- Swipe up on the screen.
- Select Demos > Scan Demo.
- Point the computer at the barcode.
- Touch "Scan" on the screen or press and hold any Scan button. Center the aiming beam over the barcode.
Decode results will appear on the screen.
Note: The Scan Demo app may not have all barcode symbologies enabled by default. If a barcode fails to scan, check the User Guide for instructions on enabling specific symbologies.
Sync Data
To transfer files between your EDA51 and a computer:
- Connect the EDA51 to your computer using a USB charge/communication accessory.
- On the EDA51, swipe down from the top of the screen to open the notifications panel.
- Touch the "Android System USB charging" notification twice to open the options menu.
- Select either "Transfer files" or "Transfer photos (PTP)".
- Open the file browser on your computer.
- Browse to the EDA51. You can now copy, delete, and move files or folders as you would with any other storage drive (e.g., cut, paste, drag, and drop).
Note: Some folders may be hidden in the file browser when Provisioning mode is turned off.
Restart the Mobile Computer
Restarting the computer can resolve issues like unresponsive applications or a locked system.
Standard Restart:
- Press and hold the Power button until the options menu appears.
- Select "Restart".
For Unresponsive Touch Panel:
- Press and hold the Power button for approximately 8 seconds until the computer restarts.
