KILZ Original Water-Based Interior Primer is engineered to provide the same robust stain-blocking performance as traditional oil-based primers, but with the advantages of water-based technology. This primer effectively tackles challenging interior stains such as water, smoke, grease, tannin, and marker, delivering a smooth, level finish and excellent adhesion to a wide range of surfaces.
It offers a significantly lower odor profile compared to oil-based alternatives, is easy to clean up with soap and water, and dries quickly, allowing for recoating in just one hour. The primer sands easily after two hours, facilitating a smooth surface for topcoats. It is also formulated with low VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) at less than 100 g/L.
This primer is suitable for interior use on surfaces such as wood, drywall, MDF, plaster, brick, masonry, concrete, metals, and aluminum. It is not recommended for areas with mold or mildew issues or as a primer for floor coatings.
Proper surface preparation is crucial for optimal performance. Ensure all surfaces are clean, dry, and free from dust, chalk, oil, grease, wax, polish, mold, mildew, and loose paint. Scrape and sand any peeling or checked paint to achieve a smooth surface. Glossy surfaces should be deglossed by scuff sanding. Any existing mold or mildew must be thoroughly removed and the surface cleaned and dried before application. Aged interior masonry surfaces (cured for at least 30 days) are also suitable.
Apply KILZ Original Water-Based Interior Primer when surface, air, and product temperatures are between 50°F and 90°F. Stir the product thoroughly before and during use. Application can be done using a brush, roller, or airless spray. For stain-blocking effectiveness, avoid thinning the product. If heavy stains are present, a second coat of primer may be necessary after testing. Coverage is approximately 300-400 sq. ft. per gallon, depending on the surface.
Clean application tools and any paint spatters immediately with warm, soapy water. Dispose of unused product responsibly; do not pour down drains. For disposal information, consult local household refuse collection services.
This product contains warnings regarding potential exposure to chemicals and the hazards of lead dust from sanding old paint. Adequate ventilation is essential during application and drying.
