ART MX225 Stereo Dual Source Five Zone Distribution Mixer

Operation Manual

Front Panel Overview

The front panel of the ART MX225 features a clear layout for managing audio distribution across five zones. Each of the five identical zone sections includes controls for adjusting the levels of Source 1 and Source 2 independently. A "STEREO/MONO" selector switch is present for each zone, along with a "MONO" indicator [led] that illuminates when mono mode is engaged. A five-segment LED level meter, indicating signal presence from -25dB to CLIP [overload], provides visual feedback for each zone. Additionally, "SOURCE 1" and "SOURCE 2" indicator [led]s confirm signal activity for each source input. The rear panel, not visually depicted but described in specifications, houses the input and output connectors, power input, and fuse holder.

Introduction

The MX225 is engineered for remote volume control of multiple amplifiers or powered speakers within a distributed audio system. It provides two stereo sources to each of its five output zones. Each source input pair accommodates separate left and right balanced line-level signals. Every output zone offers independent level control for inputs 1 and 2, a stereo/mono selector with an accompanying mono indicator [led], LED level metering, and balanced left and right line-level zone outputs. All audio connections utilize balanced XLR connectors. The integrated power supply and a standard 19-inch rack-mount format facilitate straightforward installation and dependable operation.

What Is A Zone Distribution Mixer?

The utilization of multiple power amplifiers, each driving one or more speakers, or multiple powered speakers, is now a common practice in most distributed audio systems. This applies to installations in clubs, halls, restaurants, churches, arenas, offices, recreational facilities, or even portable PA systems with distributed speakers. Systems like this enable the balancing of audio levels throughout the entire coverage area. The Model MX225 allows for the adjustment of volume for every amplifier or powered speaker, either collectively or individually, from a central location. Essentially, the MX225's input connects to the PA mixer's line-level output (it can accept outputs from two mixers or stereo signal sources), while power amplifiers or powered speakers connect to the MX225's zone outputs. The independent LED level metering provides a clear visual reference of level variations across the system as you adjust the volume for each zone.

Operation

  1. Verify the correct voltage setting on the IEC style power connector for your region. Connect the AC power cord to a grounded AC outlet.
  2. Using balanced XLR cables, connect the balanced stereo output of your primary audio source (e.g., a mixer) to the MX225's left and right Line 1 In source connectors. Alternatively, a mono signal source can be connected to either the L or R input. Repeat this process for Line 2 In, connecting an additional mixer or audio source.
  3. Connect the Zone Out connectors to the inputs of the appropriate power amplifiers and/or powered speakers using balanced XLR cables.
  4. In many installations, the Stereo/Mono selector is best set to the Mono position. This is for two primary reasons. Firstly, while stereo separation is effective in environments like a home where listeners are positioned precisely between speakers for equal sound, this is often not the case in clubs, restaurants, offices, or rec halls where listeners may be closer to one speaker than another. Stereo separation can lead to hearing only parts of the audio program (e.g., guitar but not keyboard, or vice versa). In Mono mode, the entire program music is output to all speakers. Secondly, if a mono source is connected to either the Left or Right Source Input connector and one or more zones are set to Stereo, that source will only be heard from the speakers connected to the corresponding Left or Right Zone outputs. Listeners not positioned near those specific speakers might not hear the source at all.
  5. Adjust the Source level controls to achieve the desired volume in each zone. If a CLIP [overload] indicator illuminates, reduce the zone's level control or the output level of the signal source to prevent distortion.
  6. The LED level indicators in each Zone display the relative signal level for that specific Zone.
  7. The Source Indicator 1 and 2 [led]s indicate signal activity for each respective source.
