Controls

OUT LED on Receiver (RX)

The yellow LED indicates the presence of an object within the controlled area.

POWER ON LED on Receiver (RX)

The green LED indicates optimal device functioning. A fast blinking of the green LED signifies critical device alignment. Refer to the "DIAGNOSTICS" section for other indications.

POWER ON LED on Emitter (TX)

The green LED indicates correct device functioning. Refer to the "DIAGNOSTICS" section for other indications.

Installation Modes

General Information on Device Positioning

  • Align the receiver (RX) and emitter (TX) units, ensuring their distance is within the device's operating range. Position them parallel to each other with sensitive sides facing inwards and connectors on the same side. Critical alignment is indicated by the fast blinking of the green receiver LED.
  • Mount the receiver and emitter units on rigid supports that are not subject to strong vibrations, using specific fixing brackets or the holes provided on the device lids.

Precautions to Respect When Choosing and Installing the Device

  • Select the device based on the minimum object size to be detected and the maximum controlled area required (operating distance x controlled height).
  • For agro-industrial applications, verify the compatibility of the light grid housing material with any chemical agents used in the production process with the assistance of the Datalogic technical sales support department.
  • The AREAscan™ light grids are NOT safety devices and MUST NOT be used for safety control of machinery.
  • Consider the following points:
    • Avoid installation near intense and/or blinking light sources, especially near the receiver unit.
    • Strong electromagnetic disturbances can affect device functioning; evaluate and check this condition with the Datalogic technical sales support department.
    • Smoke, fog, and suspended dust in the working environment can reduce the device's operating distance.
    • Significant and frequent temperature variations, especially with very low peak temperatures, can cause condensation on optics, compromising functioning.
    • Reflecting surfaces near the light beam (above, below, or lateral) can cause passive reflections that interfere with object detection.
  • If installing adjacent devices, ensure the emitter of one unit does not interfere with the receiver of another.

General Information Relative to Object Detection and Measurement

For correct object detection and measurement, the object must pass completely through the controlled area. It is recommended to test correct detection before starting the process.

Connections

Emitter (TX): M12 4-pole connector

  • Pin 1: Brown - +24 Vdc
  • Pin 2: White - Not used
  • Pin 3: Blue - 0 V
  • Pin 4: Black - SYNC

Receiver (RX): M12 5-pole connector

  • Pin 1: Brown - +24 Vdc
  • Pin 2: White - Analogue output
  • Pin 3: Blue - 0 V
  • Pin 4: Black - Switching output
  • Pin 5: Grey - SYNC
  • Shielded cables are not foreseen in the standard connection.
  • Ground connection of the two units is not necessary.
  • Use the same power supply for both units. For correct functioning, both TX and RX units must have the same voltage reference (0V).

Functioning and Performances

Beam interruption by an object passing through the controlled area causes the switching output to close and the analogue output signal to vary. Small objects (as small as 5 mm) can be detected, with linear measurements having an error of approximately ±3 mm in optimal conditions. The switching output activates when at least one beam is obscured, indicated by the yellow receiver LED turning ON. The analogue output (0-10 V) is proportional to the number of obscured beams (0V for no beams interrupted, 10V for all beams interrupted).

The device does not require calibration, but periodical checks of resolution and/or measurement are suggested.

The blinking green receiver LED (stability function) indicates critical unit alignment or functioning near the maximum operating distance. In optimal conditions, the LED remains continuously ON.

The two units are synchronized via a cable (SYNC wire). Precarious connections or induced disturbances on the synchronism line can lead to device malfunction or temporary blocking.

[Diagram Description: Object Detection] A visual representation showing the controlled sensing area between the emitter (TX) and receiver (RX). An object is shown passing through this area, interrupting light beams, which is the principle of operation for triggering outputs.

[Diagram Description: Resolution Trend] A line graph plotting minimum resolution (R) in millimeters against operating distance (D) in millimeters. Different lines represent various DS1 series models, illustrating how resolution changes with distance for standard (SR) and high (HR) resolution types.

Emission Power Regulation (only DS1-LD-SR-XXX-PV)

The emitter is equipped with a trimmer to adjust emission power. Rotating the trimmer clockwise increases the operating distance. Reducing emission power is useful for minimizing passive reflections when the maximum operating distance is not required. The trimmer rotation is limited to 260°. Do not apply a torque greater than 35 Nmm.

Procedure: Rotate the trimmer clockwise to its limit (maximum emission). Align the RX and TX units at the required operating distance (ensure the OUT LED is OFF). Decrease emission power by rotating the trimmer counter-clockwise until the output switches (OUT LED OFF) or the minimum emission limit is reached. If the output switches off, rotate the trimmer clockwise slightly until the output switches back ON and the OUT LED remains OFF.
