Sony E-Mount Interchangeable Lens Operating Instructions

Introduction

This manual explains how to use Sony E-mount interchangeable lenses. It covers general precautions and specific instructions for the E 30mm F3.5 Macro, E 50mm F1.8 OSS, Sonnar T E 24mm F1.8 ZA, and Sonnar T FE 35mm F2.8 ZA lenses. For common precautions, please refer to the separate "Precautions before using" document. Ensure you read both documents before using your lens.

The E 30mm F3.5 Macro and E 50mm F1.8 OSS are designed exclusively for Sony α camera system E-mount cameras. The Sonnar T E 24mm F1.8 ZA and Sonnar T FE 35mm F2.8 ZA are co-developed by ZEISS and Sony Corporation for Sony E-mount cameras, produced under ZEISS's strict standards. These lenses are not compatible with A-mount cameras.

The Sonnar T FE 35mm F2.8 ZA is compatible with the full 35mm format image sensor range. Other lenses are compatible with APS-C sized image sensors. Cameras with 35mm format sensors can be set to shoot in APS-C size. Refer to your camera's instruction manual for setting details.

For compatibility information, visit the Sony website in your region or consult your Sony dealer or authorized service facility. (URL: http://www.sony.co.jp/DSLR/support/)

Notes on Use

Precautions on Using a Flash

When using a flash, remove the lens hood and shoot from at least 1 meter (3.3 feet) away from the subject. Certain lens and flash combinations may cause the lens to block flash light, resulting in a shadow at the bottom of the image.

Vignetting

Lenses naturally exhibit reduced light at the corners compared to the center. This phenomenon, known as vignetting, can be reduced by closing the aperture by 1 to 2 stops.

Identifying the Parts

The following parts are identified on the lens:

Attaching and Detaching the Lens

To Attach the Lens

1. Remove the front and rear lens caps and the camera body cap.

Note: The front lens cap can be attached/detached in two ways (1) and (2). Method (2) is convenient for attaching/detaching the cap with the lens hood mounted (for E 50mm F1.8 OSS and Sonnar T E 24mm F1.8 ZA only).

2. Align the white index on the lens barrel with the white index on the camera (mounting index). Insert the lens into the camera mount, gently press it against the camera, and rotate clockwise until it locks with a click.

Important: Do not press the camera's lens release button while mounting the lens. Do not insert the lens at an angle.

To Detach the Lens

While holding down the camera's lens release button, rotate the lens counterclockwise until it stops, then detach the lens.

Attaching the Lens Hood

Using a lens hood is recommended to prevent stray light from affecting the image and to ensure optimal image quality.

For E 30mm F3.5 Macro, Sonnar T E 24mm F1.8 ZA, Sonnar T FE 35mm F2.8 ZA:

Align the red line on the lens hood with the red dot on the lens (lens hood index). Insert the lens hood into the lens mount and rotate clockwise until the red dot on the hood aligns with the red dot on the lens and the hood clicks into place.

For E 50mm F1.8 OSS:

Align the lens hood's mounting part with the lens tip and rotate clockwise until it clicks.

Focusing

There are three focusing methods:

Refer to your camera's instruction manual for mode settings.

Macro Photography (E 30mm F3.5 Macro)

Precautions on Using an Exposure Meter or Manual Flash

When shooting close subjects with the E 30mm F3.5 Macro, the lens's brightness decreases. In automatic exposure modes or metered manual modes (like the camera's AUTO mode), exposure is compensated automatically. When using a commercial exposure meter or a manual flash function, increase the indicated exposure value.

Exposure Compensation vs. Shooting Distance
Exposure Compensation Shooting Distance (m)
+2/3 0.095
+1/3 0.098
0 0.159
(Infinity)

If subjects at different distances are within the AF area, auto focus may struggle. Consult your camera's manual to select the appropriate focus mode.
