The Braun ThermoScan Infrared Ear Thermometer is designed for accurate, safe, and fast temperature measurements. Its probe shape prevents deep insertion into the ear canal, protecting the eardrum. Proper technique is crucial for accurate readings. This thermometer is for household use only and is not a substitute for medical consultation.
Warnings and Precautions
- Consult a doctor for unexplained symptoms like irritability, vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, changes in appetite, seizure, muscle pain, stiff neck, or pain during urination, even without fever.
- Consult a doctor if the thermometer shows an elevated temperature (indicated by yellow or red background lights).
- Operating ambient temperature: 10 – 40 °C (50 – 104 °F). Avoid extreme temperatures (below -25 °C / -13 °F or over 55 °C / 131 °F) and high humidity (> 95 % RH).
- Use only genuine Braun ThermoScan lens filters (LF 40).
- Always use a new, clean lens filter for accurate measurements.
- If used without a lens filter, clean the probe tip as described in the "Care and cleaning" section.
- Keep lens filters out of reach of children.
- This product is for household use only and not intended to diagnose disease.
- The smart feature is not for pre-term or small-for-gestational-age babies, nor for interpreting hypothermic temperatures.
- Do not allow children to take temperatures unattended.
- Do not modify the equipment without manufacturer authorization.
- Parents/guardians should contact a pediatrician for any unusual signs or symptoms in children.
- Children on medication (antibiotics, analgesics, antipyretics) require professional assessment beyond temperature readings.
- Temperature elevation may signal serious illness, especially in the elderly, frail, immunocompromised, neonates, and infants. Seek professional advice immediately for temperature elevation in these groups.
- Special attention is required for neonates/infants under 3 months (consult physician if temperature exceeds 37.4 °C / 99.4 °F), patients over 60, those with diabetes or weakened immune systems, bedridden patients, and transplant patients. Fever may be blunted in the elderly.
- The thermometer contains small parts that can be swallowed or cause choking hazards. Keep out of children's reach.
Body Temperature
Normal body temperature varies by measurement site, age, and time of day. It is recommended to establish a personal normal temperature range by taking temperatures on yourself and healthy family members.
When consulting a physician, mention that the temperature was measured in the ear and provide the individual's normal ThermoScan temperature range if known.
AgeSmart Color-Coded Display
Clinical research indicates that the definition of fever changes with age. Braun's AgeSmart color-coded display simplifies temperature interpretation for the entire family.
Select the appropriate age setting using the smart button. The display color indicates the temperature:
- Green: No fever
- Yellow: Moderate fever
- Red: High fever

How does Braun ThermoScan Infrared Ear Thermometer work?
The thermometer measures infrared heat from the eardrum and surrounding tissues. The probe tip is warmed to body temperature to prevent inaccurate readings. It continuously monitors infrared energy, displaying the result when an accurate measurement is taken.
How to Use Your Braun ThermoScan
- Remove the thermometer from its protective case. [Diagram: Thermometer being removed from a blue protective case.]
- Press the Power button ?. During an internal self-check, the display shows all segments, then the last temperature taken is displayed for 5 seconds. [Diagram: Thermometer being powered on, showing the power button being pressed. The display shows segments during a self-check, then the last temperature.]
- The lens filter indicator will blink ⚠️ when a new filter is needed. Ensure a new, clean lens filter is attached before each measurement for accuracy. Attach by pushing the probe tip straight into the lens filter in the box and pulling it out. Note: The Braun ThermoScan will not work unless a lens filter is attached. [Diagram: Close-up of the probe tip with a blue lens filter attached.]
- Select the age with the AgeSmart button ???. Press the button to cycle through age groups: 0-3 Months, 3-36 Months, >36 Months - adult. Note: Age must be selected to take a measurement. The thermometer is ready when the display shows the correct age group and battery status. [Diagram: Illustration showing the AgeSmart button being pressed, cycling through age groups with corresponding icons.]
- Fit the probe snugly into the ear canal, then push and release the Start button ▶️. [Diagram: Thermometer probe being inserted into an ear. Arrows indicate gentle insertion.]
- The ExacTemp light will pulse while the temperature is in progress. It will remain solid for 3 seconds to indicate a successful reading. A long beep signals a completed measurement if the probe is properly inserted. If the probe position is unstable, short beeps will sound, the ExacTemp light will go out, and a "POS" (position error) message may appear. [Diagram: ExacTemp light pulsing, then solid. Diagram showing a finger pressing the Start button.]
- The confirmation beep indicates an accurate measurement. The result is shown on the display. [Diagram: Three examples of the thermometer display showing temperature readings: "37.0°C" (Green, Normal), "37.8°C" (Yellow, Moderate fever), "38.9°C" (Red, High fever), each with age range indicators.] Temperature Ranges:
Age range Green (Normal temperature) Yellow (Moderate fever) Red (High fever) 0-3 Months ≥35.8 – ≤37.4 °C (≥96.4 – ≤99.4 °F) >37.6–≤38.5 °C (>99.6–≤101.3 °F) >37.4 °C (>99.4 °F) >3-36 Months ≥35.4–37.6 °C (≥95.7 – ≤99.6 °F) >37.7 – ≤39.4 °C (>99.9 – ≤103.0 °F) >38.5 °C (>101.3 °F) >36 Months – adult ≥35.4–≤37.7 °C (≥95.7 –≤99.9 °F) >37.7 – ≤39.4 °C (>99.9 – ≤103.0 °F) >39.4 °C (>103.3 °F) - For the next measurement, press the Eject button ⏏ to remove and discard the used lens filter, and attach a new, clean one. Note: The thermometer defaults to the last age setting used if not changed. The Braun ThermoScan Infrared Ear Thermometer turns off automatically after 60 seconds of inactivity. It can also be turned off by pressing the Power button ?. The display will briefly flash "OFF" and then go blank. [Diagram: Finger pressing the Eject button.]
Temperature Taking Hints
Always replace disposable lens filters for accuracy and hygiene. Measurements may differ between the left and right ear; always use the same ear for consistency. Ensure the ear canal is free from obstructions or excess earwax for accurate readings.
External factors can influence ear temperatures:
