Fronius OPT/i WF Wire Straightener

Operating Instructions

Also available in: German (Bedienungsanleitung), French (Instructions de service), Polish (Instrukcja obsługi)

General Information

Device Concept

The wire straightener is used for bending or straightening wire electrodes. It can accommodate wire electrode diameters from 0.8 mm (0.03 in.) to 1.6 mm (0.06 in.). Two versions are available: one for conventional welding systems and one for robot welding systems.

Scope of Supply

The scope of supply includes the wire straightener unit and associated components. Specific part numbers are listed for conventional (e.g., 42,0001,4376, 42,0001,4374, 42,0001,4375, 4,100,576, 42,0100,1239) and robot (e.g., 42,0001,4362) systems. Some components are not shown in this document.

Diagrams show component breakdowns for conventional and robot systems, listing part numbers.

Configuration Options

The degree of wire bend can be increased or reduced based on the wire electrode's routing before the straightener and the installation method (contact roller above or below). The positions of the wire run-off plate and inlet nozzle can be interchanged according to requirements.

Illustrations show configurations for 'Contact roller above/below' and 'Interchanging wire run-off plate and inlet nozzle positions' for both conventional and robot systems.

Safety Precautions

⚠️ WARNING! Danger due to incorrect operation and incorrectly performed work.

This can result in serious injury and damage to property. All work must be carried out by trained and qualified personnel. Read and understand this document and all related system component documents.

⚠️ WARNING! Danger from electric current.

This can result in serious injury and damage to property. Before starting work:

  • Turn the power source mains switch to the "O" position.
  • Disconnect the power source from the mains.
  • Ensure the power source remains disconnected until all work is completed.
  • After opening the device, use a suitable measuring instrument to check that electrically charged components (e.g., capacitors) have been discharged.

⚠️ CAUTION! Risk from wire electrode emerging at speed.

This can result in serious injury and damage to property. If an unreeling wire-feed unit is present, also:

  • Turn the mains switch of the unreeling wire-feed unit to the "O" position.
  • Disconnect the unreeling wire-feed unit from the mains.
  • Ensure it remains disconnected until all work is completed.

⚠️ CAUTION! Risk of scalding by hot system components.

This can result in severe scalds. Before starting work, allow all hot system components to cool down to room temperature (+25 °C, +77 °F). Examples include coolant, water-cooled system components, and the wire-feed unit drive motor.

Mounting Instructions

Preparing the OPT/i WF Wire Straightener for Installation

If necessary, change the position of the inlet nozzle as follows.

Conventional System: Step 1 shows attaching an adapter to the wire straightener unit.

Robot System: Step 1 shows attaching an adapter to the wire straightener unit.

Fitting the OPT/i WF Wire Straightener

Conventional System

Step 1: Attach the adapter to the mounting plate.

Step 2: Assemble the rollers and other small components onto the mounting plate.

Step 3: Attach the wire straightener unit to the assembled mounting plate.

Diagrams show the sequence of attaching an adapter to a plate, assembling rollers and small parts, and finally mounting the wire straightener unit.

Robot System

Step 1: Attach the adapter to the wire straightener unit.

Step 2: Assemble the rollers and other small components onto the mounting plate.

Step 3: Attach the wire straightener unit to the assembled mounting plate.

Diagrams show the sequence of attaching an adapter to the unit, assembling rollers and small parts onto a plate, and finally mounting the wire straightener unit.
