Electrical Safety

The electric motor has been designed for one voltage only. Always check that the power supply corresponds to the voltage on the rating plate. 230 V AC means your tool will operate on alternating current. As little as 10% lower voltage can cause loss of power and can result in overheating. All DEWALT tools are factory tested; if this tool does not operate, check the power supply. Your DEWALT tool is double insulated, therefore no earth wire is required.

Extension Cords

? CAUTION: Use only extension cords that are approved by the country's Electrical Authority. Before using extension cords, inspect them for loose or exposed wires, damaged insulation and defective fittings. Replace the cord if necessary.

Additional Safety Instructions for Drills

❗ WARNING: ALWAYS use safety glasses. Everyday eyeglasses are NOT safety glasses. Also use face or dust mask if cutting operation is dusty. ALWAYS WEAR CERTIFIED SAFETY EQUIPMENT:

❗ WARNING: Some dust created by power sanding, sawing, grinding, drilling, and other construction activities contains chemicals known to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm. Some examples of these chemicals are:

Your risk from these exposures varies, depending on how often you do this type of work. To reduce your exposure to these chemicals: work in a well ventilated area, and work with approved safety equipment, such as those dust masks that are specially designed to filter out microscopic particles.

❗ WARNING: Use of this tool can generate and/or disburse dust, which may cause serious and permanent respiratory or other injury. Always use NIOSH/OSHA approved respiratory protection appropriate for the dust exposure. Direct particles away from face and body.

❗ WARNING: ALWAYS wear proper personal hearing protection that conforms to ANSI S12.6 (S3.19) during use. Under some conditions and duration of use, noise from this product may contribute to hearing loss.

❗ WARNING: We recommend the use of a residual current device with a residual current rating of 30mA or less.

The label on your tool may include the following symbols. The symbols and their definitions are as follows:

SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS FOR FUTURE USE

Motor Brushes

DEWALT uses an advanced brush system which automatically stops the drill when the brushes wear out. This prevents serious damage to the motor.

COMPONENTS (FIG. 1)

❗ WARNING: Never modify the power tool or any part of it. Damage or personal injury could result.

[Figure 1 shows components A, B, C, D on two drill models, D21008 and D21002.]

Switch (Fig. 1)

To start drill, depress trigger switch (A); to stop the drill, release trigger.

To lock trigger in the on position for continuous operation, depress trigger and push locking button (D) up, then gently release the trigger. The locking button is for use only when the drill is mounted in a drill press stand or otherwise held stationary.

❗ WARNING: To reduce the risk of personal injury, be sure to release the locking button before disconnecting the plug from the power supply. Failure to do so will cause the tool to start immediately the next time it is plugged in. Damage or injury could result.

To release the locking mechanism, depress the trigger fully, then release it. Before using the tool each time, be sure that the locking button release mechanism is working freely. Do not lock the switch on when drilling by hand so that you can instantly release the trigger switch if the bit binds in the hole.

VARIABLE SPEED TRIGGER SWITCH

This switch permits speed control: the farther the trigger is depressed, the higher the speed of the drill.

NOTE: Use lower speeds for starting holes without a center punch, drilling in metal or plastics, driving screws or drilling ceramics. Higher speeds are better for drilling wood and composition boards, and for using abrasive and polishing accessories.

REVERSING LEVER

The reversing lever (B) changes the direction of rotation of the drill and is used when backing out screws and jammed drill bits.

To operate the tool in reverse, release the trigger switch and push the lever to the left (when viewed from the chuck end) as shown in Figure 2. To operate the drill in forward for drilling holes or driving screws (as well as when using other accessories) release the trigger switch and push the lever to the right (when viewed from the chuck end).

Return the reversing lever to the forward position after all operations in reverse are completed.

OPERATION

❗ WARNING: Shock Hazard. To reduce the risk of serious personal injury, turn tool off and disconnect tool from power source before making any adjustments or removing/installing attachments or accessories.

❗ WARNING: To reduce the risk of personal injury, ALWAYS ensure workpiece is anchored or clamped firmly. If drilling thin material, use a wood "back-up" block to prevent damage to the material.

Drilling

  1. Use sharp drill bits only. For WOOD, use the low speed setting and twist drill bits, spade bits, power auger bits, or hole saws. For METAL, use the low speed setting and steel twist drill bits or hole saws. For MASONRY, such as brick, cement, cinder block, etc., use carbide-tipped bits rated for percussion drilling. Use low speed for bits greater than 10 mm (3/8").
  2. Always apply pressure in a straight line with the bit. Use enough pressure to keep drill biting, but do not push hard enough to stall the motor or deflect the bit.
  3. Hold tool firmly with both hands to control the twisting action of the drill.
  4. ❗ WARNING: Drill may stall if overloaded causing a sudden twist. Always expect the stall. Grip the drill firmly with both hands to control the twisting action and avoid injury.
  5. IF DRILL STALLS, it is usually because it is being overloaded or improperly used. RELEASE TRIGGER IMMEDIATELY, remove drill bit from work, and determine cause of stalling. DO NOT CLICK TRIGGER ON AND OFF IN AN ATTEMPT TO START A STALLED DRILL -- THIS CAN DAMAGE THE DRILL.
  6. To minimize stalling or breaking through the material, reduce pressure on drill and ease the bit through the last fractional part of the hole.
  7. Keep the motor running when pulling the bit back out of a drilled hole. This will help prevent jamming.
  8. With variable speed drills there is no need to center punch the point to be drilled. Use a slow speed to start the hole and accelerate by squeezing the trigger harder when the hole is deep enough to drill without the bit skipping out.

DRILLING IN METAL

Start drilling with slow speed and increase to full power while applying firm pressure on the tool. A smooth even flow of metal chips indicates the proper drilling rate. Use a cutting lubricant when drilling metals. The exceptions are cast iron and brass which should be drilled dry.

NOTE: Large [8 mm (5/16") to 13 mm (1/2")] holes in steel can be made easier if a pilot hole [4 mm (5/32") to 5 mm (3/16")] is drilled first.

DRILLING IN WOOD

Start drilling with slow speed and increase to full power while applying firm pressure on the tool. Holes in wood can be made with the same twist drills used for metal. These bits may overheat unless pulled out frequently to clear chips from the flutes. Work that is apt to splinter should be backed up with a block of wood.

DRILLING IN MASONRY

When drilling in masonry, use carbide-tipped bits rated for percussion drilling and be certain that the bits are sharp. Use a constant and firm force on the tool to drill most effectively. A smooth, even flow of dust indicates the proper drilling rate.

Keyless Chuck – D21008 (Fig. 3)

Your tool features a keyless chuck (C) for greater convenience. To insert a drill bit or other accessory, follow the steps listed below.

  1. Grasp the rear half of the chuck with one hand and use your other hand to rotate the front half counterclockwise, as shown in Figure 3. Rotate far enough so that the chuck opens sufficiently to accept the desired accessory.
  2. Insert the bit or other accessory about 19 mm (3/4") into the chuck and tighten securely by holding the rear half of the chuck and rotating the front portion in the clockwise direction. When the chuck is nearly tightened, you will hear a clicking sound. After 4-6 clicks, the chuck is securely tightened around the accessory.
  3. To release the accessory, repeat step 1 listed above.

❗ WARNING: Do not attempt to tighten drill bits (or any other accessory) by gripping the front part of the chuck and turning the tool on. Damage to the chuck and personal injury may result.

[Figure 4 illustrates keyless chuck removal using a hex key and soft hammer.]

KEYLESS CHUCK REMOVAL (FIG. 4)

Tighten the chuck around the shorter end of a hex key (not supplied) of 6 mm (1/4") or greater size. Using a soft hammer or piece of wood, strike the longer end in the counterclockwise direction. This will loosen the chuck so that it can be unscrewed by hand.

[Figure 5 illustrates keyless chuck installation using a hex key and soft hammer.]

KEYLESS CHUCK INSTALLATION (FIG. 5)

Screw the chuck on by hand as far as it will go. Tighten the chuck around the shorter end of a 6 mm (1/4") or larger hex key (not supplied) strike the longer end in the clockwise direction with a soft hammer.

Keyed Chuck – D21002

Open the chuck jaws by turning collar by hand and insert the shank of the bit about 19 mm (3/4") into chuck. Tighten the chuck collar by hand. Place chuck key in each of the three holes, and tighten in clockwise direction. It's important to tighten chuck with all three holes. To release the bit, turn the chuck counterclockwise in just one hole, then loosen the chuck by hand.

[Figure 6 illustrates keyed chuck removal using a hex key and soft hammer.]

REMOVAL OF KEYED CHUCK (FIG. 6)

Tighten the chuck around the shorter end of a hex key (not supplied) of 6 mm (1/4") or greater size. Using a soft hammer, strike the key sharply in the counterclockwise direction when viewed from the front of the tool. This will loosen the chuck so that it can be removed by hand.

[Figure 7 illustrates keyed chuck installation using a hex key and soft hammer.]

KEYED CHUCK INSTALLATION (FIG. 7)

Screw the chuck on by hand as far as it will go. Insert the shorter end of a hex key (not supplied) of 6 mm (1/4") or greater size and strike it in the clockwise direction with a soft hammer.
