WAND-TELESCOPING
The extension length of the wand is adjustable and requires no assembly. To adjust, simply push down on the wand adjust button and slide the upper wand to the desired height. When adjusting the wand length, you may have to hold the PowerMate with your hand or foot.
The swivel, located on the PowerMate, allows you to turn the handle to the left or right side to reach farther under low furniture.
To connect wand to PowerMate: Insert wand into PowerMate until the wand button snaps into place. To remove: Step on wand release pedal, then pull up on wand.
CANISTER
- Open the canister hood.
- Check to see that the dust bag is properly installed. See BAG CHANGING for instructions.
- Check to see that the motor safety filter is properly installed. See MOTOR SAFETY FILTER CHANGING for instructions.
Hood and Tool Storage Cover: It is normal for the canister hood and tool storage cover to come off when opened further than needed. Line up the hinge slots, insert the hinges into the slots, and close the hood and tool storage cover to reinstall.
⚠️ Never open canister hood with the tool storage cover open. This will help to prevent damage from occurring to the canister hood and/or tool storage cover.
HOSE
- Line up the hose latch tab and notch in canister hood and insert hose into canister until it snaps into place. To remove: Do not open hood before removing hose. With hood closed, depress hose latch tab and pull upward on hose.
- Insert handle into wand until lock button snaps in place. Be sure hose is not twisted. To remove: Press handle quick release button and pull up on handle.
To store: Disconnect hose from wand and canister to prevent stress on hose during storage. Store hose in a loosely coiled position so the hose covering is not stressed.
Pet PowerMate Storage
This canister is equipped with an on-board storage area for a Pet PowerMate attachment.
To Install: Open the Pet PowerMate storage cover. Insert the Pet PowerMate, press down into place, and close the lid securely.
To Remove: Open the storage cover. Remove Pet PowerMate from the storage area and use as needed (see ATTACHMENTS and ATTACHMENT USE TABLE).
Operating Instructions
⚠️ Moving parts! To reduce the risk of personal injury, DO NOT touch the agitator when vacuum cleaner is on. Contacting the agitator while it is rotating can cut, bruise or cause other injuries. Always turn off and unplug from electrical outlet before servicing. Use caution when operating near children.
How to Start
❗ Personal Injury and Product Damage Hazard
- DO NOT plug in if switch is in ON position. Personal injury or property damage could result.
- The cord moves rapidly when rewinding. Keep children away and provide a clear path when rewinding the cord to prevent personal injury. DO NOT use outlets above counters. Damage from cord to items in surrounding area could occur.
- Pull cord out of canister to desired length. The cord will not rewind until the cord rewind button is pushed.
- Plug the polarized power cord into a 120 Volt outlet located near the floor.
- Lower wand from upright position by pressing on the handle release pedal.
- Select a pile height setting by pressing the HEIGHT ADJUST pedal on the rear of the PowerMate. The pile height setting shows on the indicator. See SUGGESTED PILE HEIGHT SETTINGS. Attention: Refer to your carpet manufacturer's cleaning recommendations. Some more delicate carpets may require that they be vacuumed with the PowerMate agitator turned off to prevent carpet damage.
- Select position on the handle three-way On/Off switch:
- OFF: Turns off the vacuum.
- FLOOR: Turns on the canister motor only.
- CARPET: Turns on both the canister and the PowerMate motors.
⚠️ DO NOT leave the PowerMate running in one spot in the upright position for any length of time. Damage to carpet may occur.
NOTE: When this switch is in the FLOOR position, the wand light, nozzle headlight and dirt sensor DO NOT function since no electricity flows to the PowerMate.
To rewind: Turn off and unplug the vacuum cleaner. Hold the plug while rewinding to prevent damage or injury from the moving cord. Push cord rewind button.
NOTE: To reduce the risk of electric shock, this vacuum cleaner has a polarized plug; one blade is wider than the other. This plug will fit in a polarized outlet only one way. If the plug does not fit fully in the outlet, reverse the plug. If it still does not fit, contact a qualified electrician to install the proper outlet. Do not change the plug in any way.
Vacuuming Tips
Suggested sweeping pattern: For best cleaning action, the PowerMate should be pushed straight away from you and pulled straight back. At the end of each pull stroke, the direction of the PowerMate should be changed to point into the next section to be cleaned. This pattern should be continued across the carpet with slow, gliding motions.
NOTE: Fast, jerky strokes do not provide complete cleaning.
The nozzle swivel rotates left and right for improved maneuvering in tight spaces and around corners.
⚠️ Product Damage Hazard: Use care if the PowerMate and wand is left in the upright position as it may tip over easily. Property damage can occur if tipped.
❗ Personal Injury and Product Damage Hazard: DO NOT run over power cord with PowerMate. Personal injury or product damage could result. DO NOT pull plug from wall by the power cord. If there is damage to the cord or plug, personal injury or property damage could result.
The hose swivel allows the hose to turn without moving the canister. This is helpful for cleaning in small areas. Check hose for twisting before pulling canister.
Carpeted stairs
Carpeted stairs need to be cleaned periodically. Use the suction control on HIGH. Close the electronic suction control completely for maximum cleaning power.
NOTE: Be sure the mechanical suction control located on the handle is closed for maximum cleaning power.
❗ Personal Injury Hazard: Use care if canister is placed on stairs. It may fall, causing personal injury or property damage.
The stair grip located on the caster will aid in preventing the canister from slipping when used on stairs (see PERFORMANCE FEATURES).
NOTE: Be sure the canister is resting securely on the stairs and the caster is in a locked position before using.
For best cleaning results, keep the airflow passage open. Check each assembly area in REMOVING CLOGS occasionally for clogs. Turn off and unplug vacuum cleaner from outlet before checking.
⚠️ Product Damage Hazard: Do not pull on the hose to move the canister from one stair to the next. When finished cleaning in one area, use the handle grip on the canister to move the vacuum cleaner to a new location for further cleaning.
Suggested Pile Height Settings
For best deep down cleaning, use the XLO setting. However, you may need to raise the height to make some jobs easier, such as scatter rugs and some deep pile carpets, and to prevent the vacuum cleaner from shutting off. Suggested settings are:
- HI: Shag, deep pile, or scatter rugs.
- MED: Medium to deep pile.
- LO: Low to medium pile.
- XLO: Most carpets and bare floors.
Attachments
⚠️ NO install or remove the handle or wands when the vacuum cleaner is on. This could cause sparks and damage electrical contacts or electronic controls.
HANDLE ATTACHMENTS
NOTE: If you have the Pet PowerMate installed, turn off the vacuum cleaner before removing the handle from the wands.
- Press the handle quick release button to release the handle and pull the handle upward.

Performance Features
❗ Personal Injury Hazard: Always turn off and unplug the vacuum cleaner before cleaning the agitator areas, as they could start unexpectedly. Failure to do so could result in personal injury.
EDGE CLEANER
The active edge cleaner brushes are on each side of the PowerMate. Pass the PowerMate next to walls or next to furniture to help remove dirt accumulated at the carpet edges.
OVERLOAD PROTECTOR
The PowerMate has built-in protection against damage to the motor and belt in case of agitator jamming. If the agitator runs too slow or jams, the PowerMate overload protector activates and the red light turns on. The canister motor will continue to run.
To correct the problem: Turn off and unplug the vacuum cleaner, clean the obstruction, and then press the BELT RESET button. If the problem persists, seek a qualified technician for service.
STAIR GRIP
During normal operation of the vacuum cleaner while in the horizontal position, the body casters swivel freely 360°. The STA GRIP feature prevents the casters from automatically locking in position, allowing the vacuum to swivel 25° from a horizontal position to allow the vacuum to rest securely on stairs.
WAND LIGHT
This vacuum is equipped with a light in the extension wand. This light functions only in CARPET mode. The light will not operate when it is not attached to the PowerMate. The light can be used to illuminate hard-to-reach places.
"CHECK BAG" INDICATOR
When the vacuum is operating with normal airflow, the "CHECK BAG" indicator is off. The light turns on when the airflow is restricted due to a clogged bag, clogged filters, or other possible obstructions in the airflow path. See REMOVING CLOGS.
To correct the problem: See the TROUBLESHOOTING diagram.
ELECTRONIC SUCTION CONTROL
The electronic suction control allows you to change the suction power of the vacuum cleaner.
- Increase suction: Move the control slider towards the '+' symbol. Use for deep cleaning carpets and bare floors.
- Decrease suction: Move the control slider towards the '-' symbol. In LOW POWER, suction decreases, for cleaning delicate drapes and upholstery.
MECHANICAL SUCTION CONTROL
The mechanical suction control allows you to adjust the suction power of the vacuum cleaner depending on the thickness of the fabric.
- Closing the control increases suction power.
- Opening the control decreases suction power.
THERMAL PROTECTOR
This vacuum has a thermal protector that automatically adjusts to protect the vacuum from overheating. If an obstruction prevents normal airflow to the motor, the thermal protector automatically shuts off the motor to allow it to cool down, preventing possible damage to the vacuum cleaner.
To correct the problem: Turn off and unplug the vacuum cleaner to allow it to cool and for the thermal protector to reset. Locate and remove obstructions, if necessary. Also check and clean/replace any clogged filters. Wait approximately thirty (30) minutes and plug in the vacuum and turn it on to see if the motor protector has reset. The motor protector will not reset if the vacuum has not been turned off, even if the vacuum has cooled down.
Note: It is possible for the light to turn on when using attachments because airflow is reduced by the attachments.
DIRT SENSOR
The DIRT SENSOR indicator system is mounted on the PowerMate nozzle, near the reset button. It consists of a series of two red and two green indicators. The lights indicate the amount of dirt particles passing through the detector as they are transported to the dust bag.
INITIAL START-UP
The first time the PowerMate is started, the following occurs within a 2-second period:
- The two red indicators light up.
- Two green indicators light up and remain lit until you begin using the PowerMate.
NOTE: If the nozzle is over a surface with dirt, it will be vacuumed up, and some red indicators may remain lit.
IN OPERATION
As you move the PowerMate across the floor, the indicators change configuration depending on whether the vacuum is picking up a lot or a little dirt. If one or more red indicators remain lit, it means the vacuum is still picking up dirt, it is still passing through the hose, and you need to continue vacuuming the surface. When the green indicator stays lit as you move the PowerMate over a specific area, it means the detector is not detecting dirt and the area is clean.
NOTE: The dirt sensor lights do not function when the FLOOR setting is selected.
Removing Clogs
The vacuum creates suction that lifts dirt. Dirt is propelled through the airflow passages to the bag by a rapid stream of air. The dust bag allows air to flow through, but traps the dirt.
To achieve the best cleaning results, keep the airflow passages open. Periodically examine the areas indicated with asterisks (*) for clogs. Turn off and unplug from the receptacle before checking.
Areas to check for clogs:
- Hose
- Wand
- Nozzle
- Canister inlet
- Motor Safety Filter
- Exhaust Filter
Bag Changing
The bag should be changed frequently for best cleaning results. The CHECK BAG indicator will light up when it needs changing or when airflow is blocked.
NOTE: See PARTS AND FEATURES for the correct bag number.
- Turn off and unplug the vacuum cleaner.
- Remove the hose from the vacuum cleaner.
- Pull the latch on the lid outward and upward; then lift the canister lid.
- Unlock the cardboard collar from the red bag mount by pushing outward and pulling upward.
- Remove the bag from the red mount.
- Check and change the motor safety filter when necessary.
- The red bag mount will tilt forward after you remove the bag. This will prevent the lid from closing before a new bag is installed.
NOTE: DO NOT bend or fold the center of the cardboard when installing the bag into the bag mount slots.
- Turn the red bag holder down and to install the bag into the slots, push down until the cardboard tabs securely enclose in the appropriate positions as shown in the diagram.
- Push the bag down, securing it inside the cavity to prevent it from being caught by the vacuum cleaner lid.
- Lower the canister lid and close the latch.
- Insert the hose into the canister until it snaps into place.
- Connect the power cord into the wall outlet.
⚠️ NEVER REUSE A DUST BAG. Very fine materials, such as carpet deodorizers, facial powder, fine dust, plaster, chalk, lint from new carpets, etc., can clog the bag and cause it to burst before it is full and can damage the vacuum motor. Change the bag more frequently when vacuuming these types of materials.
Cleaning Exterior and Attachments
1. Turn off and unplug the power cord from the wall outlet. DO NOT spray water on the vacuum cleaner. 2. To clean the exterior or reduce static electricity and dust accumulation, wipe the exterior surface of the vacuum cleaner and attachments with a soft, clean cloth, dampened in a solution of water and liquid detergent, and then wipe dry. Dry thoroughly after cleaning.
⚠️ Do not use accessories if they are wet. Accessories used in dirty areas, under the refrigerator, should not be used on other surfaces without first being washed. They may leave marks.
Motor Safety Filter Changing
❗ Electrical Shock Hazard: Turn off and unplug the vacuum cleaner. Do not operate the vacuum cleaner without the motor safety filter. Ensure the filter is dry and properly installed to prevent motor failure and/or electrical shock.
ELECTROSTATIC MOTOR SAFETY FILTER
This filter must be changed when it is dirty. It should be changed periodically according to conditions of use. The filter cannot be washed, as it will lose its ability to trap dust.
NOTE: See PARTS AND FEATURES for the motor safety filter number.
- To remove the bag, follow instructions in BAG CHANGING.
- Lift the rubber retainer and remove the motor safety filter as shown.
- Replace the filter, and install the white surface of the filter into the dust bag cavity by sliding it into the rubber retainer grooves below the rubber retainer.
- See BAG CHANGING for changing the bag.
Exhaust Filter Changing
HEPA EXHAUST FILTER
The filter cartridge must be changed when it is dirty. Change the filter when the surface area is completely covered. The filter cannot be washed, as it will lose its ability to trap dust.
NOTE: See PARTS AND FEATURES for the exhaust filter number.
- Press the latch down to release the exhaust filter cover from the slot in the vacuum cleaner.
- Pull the cover away from the vacuum cleaner.
- Remove the exhaust filter using the handle as shown.
- Replace the exhaust filter cartridge. Place the new filter into the vacuum cleaner with the sponge side facing the vacuum cleaner.
- Mount the exhaust filter cover by placing the two tabs on the filter cover into the slots on the vacuum cleaner and rotate into place.
- Slide the latch down to lock the exhaust filter cover in place.
- Release the latch and confirm the cover is secure.
PowerMate® Care
All safety precautions must always be followed before performing maintenance on the PowerMate. Turn off and unplug the vacuum cleaner before performing maintenance on your vacuum cleaner. Failure to do so could result in electrical shock or personal injury, or the vacuum cleaner may start unexpectedly.

- Extract the lens from the housing by inserting the screwdriver into the slot, push down on the lens and rotate it with the screwdriver towards the unit.
- Remove the old bulb from the socket by pulling straight out. Note: Over time, the heat from the bulb may damage nearby plastic parts.
- Carefully insert the replacement bulb securely into the socket. Note: Refer to PARTS AND FEATURES for the bulb number.
- Replace the lens by inserting the bottom part of the lens into the slot and push up until the lens snaps into place, ensuring the lens is correctly positioned.
Dirt Sensor
Although the Kenmore vacuum cleaner's dirt detection function is designed to provide many years of uninterrupted service, the passage of dirt through the system's airflow paths can cause a buildup on the lenses, causing the green indicator to stay on and not change to red. When this occurs, the lenses must be cleaned.
TO CLEAN THE LENSES
- Turn off and unplug the vacuum cleaner.
- As shown in the diagram, the two dust indicators are located within the swivel joint, approximately 3 ¾ inches or 90 mm below. Observe the arrows. To reach the detector elements, use a long, flexible brush, such as a bottle brush. Brush each detector several times to remove dirt and dust.
Never use water or cleaning solution to clean the lenses. Residue from water or cleaner will cause the lenses to become coated with dirt more quickly, requiring more frequent cleaning.
- Reinstall the wand after cleaning the detectors.
NOTE: If you look inside the swivel joint, you may see a ring. The detector element is just below this ring.
Agitator Servicing
❗ Electrical Shock or Personal Injury Hazard: Turn off and unplug the vacuum cleaner before performing maintenance on your vacuum cleaner. Failure to do so could result in electrical shock or cause personal injury if the vacuum starts unexpectedly.

Master Protection Agreements
Congratulations on making a smart purchase. Your new Kenmore product is designed and manufactured to provide years of reliable operation. But like all products, it may need preventive maintenance or an occasional repair. For this reason, having a Master Protection Agreement can save you money and inconvenience.
The Master Protection Agreement also helps to extend the life of your new product. Here's what the Agreement includes:
- Parts and labor needed to help keep these products functioning properly under normal use conditions, not just defects. Our coverage goes far beyond the product warranty. No deductible, no functional failure is excluded from coverage.
- Expert service offered by a list of over 10,000 Sears authorized service technicians, meaning someone you can trust will be working on your product.
- Unlimited service calls and nationwide service, as often as you need it, no matter where you are.
- Product replacement guarantee. Replacement of your covered product if four or more failures occur within twelve months. Replacement of your product with a new one if your covered product cannot be repaired.
- Annual preventive check-ups and maintenance whenever you wish, at no charge.
- Quick help by telephone - We call it Rapid Resolution. Telephone support from a Sears representative on all products. Think of us as a "talking user manual."
- Surge protection that provides protection against power surges that cause electrical damage.
- $250 of food loss protection annually in case any food spoils as a result of a mechanical failure of any covered freezer or refrigerator.
- Rental reimbursement if repair of your covered product takes longer than promised.
- 10% discount on the regular price of any non-covered repair service and related parts installed.
Once you purchase the Agreement, just one phone call is all it takes to schedule service. You can call any time of day or night, or schedule a service appointment online.
The Master Protection Agreement is a risk-free purchase. If for any reason you cancel during the product warranty period, you will receive a full refund. Or, a prorated refund after the warranty expiration period. Buy your Master Agreement today!
