1 Prepare the Door and Check Dimensions

If drilling a new door, use the supplied template and complete door drilling instructions available at www.kwikset.com/doorprep.

A. Measure Door Hole Diameter

Confirm the hole in the door is either 2-1/8" (54 mm) or 1-1/2" (38 mm).

Note: Additional door preparation may be required for doors with 1-1/2" (38 mm) holes. Consult the deadbolt drilling instructions at www.kwikset.com/doorprep.

B. Measure Backset

Confirm the backset is either 2-3/8" or 2-3/4" (60 or 70 mm).

C. Measure Door Edge Hole

Confirm the hole in the door edge is 1" (25 mm).

D. Measure Door Thickness

Confirm the door is between 1-3/8" and 2" (35 mm and 51 mm) thick.

2 Install the Latch and Strike

A. Check Door Edge

Is the door edge chiseled? If yes, use latch "A". If the latch bolt is not already extended, extend it. If no, use latch "B". If the latch bolt is not already extended, extend it.

B. Position Latch

Hold the latch in front of the door hole, with the latch face flush against the door edge.

C. Center D-shaped Hole

Is the D-shaped hole centered in the door hole? If yes, no adjustment is required. Proceed to the next step. If no, rotate the latch face as shown to extend the latch.

D. Select Latch Type

Choose between Latch "A" or Latch "B". Ensure the "UP" indicator is on top for both.

E. Install Strike

Install the strike on the door frame. Ensure the hole in the door frame is drilled a minimum of 1" (25 mm) deep. Use longer screws (Q) closest to the door jamb for maximum security.

3 Install the Exterior Assembly

A. Verify Door Hole Diameter

Confirm the door hole diameter is 2-1/8" (54 mm) or 1-1/2" (38 mm). If the diameter is 2-1/8", "E" (Adapter ring) is required for installation. If the diameter is 1-1/2", "E" is not needed.

B. Locate Screws

Locate screws (S) for step 3C.

C. Install Exterior Assembly and Mounting Plate

  1. Ensure the cable goes underneath the latch.
  2. Support the exterior assembly during mounting plate installation.
  3. Route the cable through the center hole, then push the cable into the bottom hole.
  4. Rotate the torque blade to align with the D-shaped hole.
  5. Keep the assembly parallel to the edge of the door.
  6. Tighten screws (S) evenly.
  7. Insert a key and test the latch. If the latch does not extend or retract smoothly, adjust screws (S). Remove the key when finished and ensure the latch bolt is fully extended.

4 Install the Interior Assembly

A. Prepare Interior Assembly

Remove the battery cover and battery pack from the interior assembly. Ensure the turnpiece is in the vertical position.

B. Connect Cables and Install

  1. Ensure a tight cable connection. Align the cable.
  2. Lay excess cable flat inside the bottom of the interior housing.
  3. Push the turnpiece shaft onto the torque blade.
  4. Secure the assembly with screws (U) into the bottom hole.

Note: Do not install batteries yet.

5 Perform the Door Handing Process

This step teaches the lock the orientation of your door, which is crucial for lock operation.

A. Install Batteries

Install 4 AA batteries (L) into the battery pack (J). Ensure correct polarity. Use new, non-rechargeable Alkaline batteries only.

B. Insert Battery Pack

Make sure the door is open. Insert the battery pack.

C. Door Handing Process

After a few seconds, the latch bolt will retract and extend on its own to learn the door's orientation. This is the door handing process.

D. Check Result

Once complete, the touchscreen will indicate success (flashing checkmark symbol and single column of digits) or failure (flashing "X" pattern).

If the touchscreen indicates a failure, perform the manual door handing procedure on page 10 or consult the online User Guide at www.kwikset.com/support/guides/premis-user.

6 Install the Interior Cover

Install the interior cover (K) and secure it with screws (V).

7 OPTIONAL: Re-key the Lock

If desired, the lock can be re-keyed to work with your existing key. Refer to the supplied SmartKey Re-key instructions for more information.

8 Download the Premis App and Pair Your Lock to Your Phone

A. Download App

Download the Premis app from the App Store.

B. Pair Lock

Follow the instructions inside the app to pair your smartphone, manage lock settings, and send user codes to family and friends.

Remote functionality may be disabled if your Apple TV goes to sleep; disable sleep mode in Apple TV settings.

With the Touchscreen

To lock/unlock with the touchscreen, at least one user code must be programmed. Adding user codes via the Premis app is recommended. For direct lock programming, refer to www.kwikset.com/support/guides/premis-user.

Locking the Door

  1. Activate the screen.
  2. Press the Lock symbol ?.

Note: The door cannot be locked via touchscreen if no user codes are programmed.

Unlocking the Door

  2. If SecureScreen™ is enabled, touch the random digits that appear.
  3. Enter your user code.

If you press the wrong digit, press the Lock symbol ? once to clear digits and restart code entry.

Auto-Lock

The Auto-Lock feature automatically re-locks your door 30 seconds after unlocking. This feature is off by default but can be enabled and the time delay adjusted (30 seconds to 5 minutes) within the Premis app.

Activating the Screen

  • Option 1: Touch screen with palm or back of hand until digits illuminate.
  • Option 2: Touch the lower left area of the screen (where the checkmark symbol ✔️ is) until digits illuminate.
  • Option 3: Touch screen with three or more fingers until digits illuminate.

SecureScreen™

SecureScreen™ is an added-security feature that displays random digits before user code entry. This ensures fingerprints are on all digits, preventing code identification by examining the touchscreen. This feature can be disabled in the Premis app.

Lights and Sound

Status LED Colors

The Status LED blinks every 6 seconds on the lock interior to communicate lock status (locked/unlocked) or low battery. The Status LED can be turned off in the Premis app. During pairing, the Status LED flashes red and green, followed by a short beep (if sound is not muted).

  • Amber flash: Door is locked.
  • Green flash: Door is unlocked.
  • Red flash: The 4 AA batteries are low and need replacement.

Sound

The lock beeps during normal use and programming. Sound can be muted in the Premis app.

System Alerts

Note: Beeping will not be heard if the lock's sound is muted.

  • X-pattern: Flashes 1 time with 1 beep (Incorrect user code entered). Flashes 3 times with 3 beeps (No user codes programmed, programming timeout, or unsuccessful programming). Flashes 15 times with 15 beeps (3 incorrect codes entered within 1 minute; 60-second lockout before re-entry).
  • Checkmark & Lock: Flashes simultaneously 5 times with a long continuous beep (Low battery). Alternate flashing 5 times with a long continuous beep (Door jammed while attempting to lock).
  • Beeping only: Lock beeps continuously (Tamper alarm when cable is disconnected. Remove battery pack, reconnect cable, and reinstall battery pack).

Manual Door Handing

This process can be initiated manually if the lock is moved to a different door.

  1. Remove battery pack.
  2. Press and HOLD the Program button while reinserting the battery pack. Release the button once the battery pack is installed. The Status LED will flash red and green.

If the touchscreen indicates a failure, see the online Premis User Guide at www.kwikset.com/support/guides/premis-user.

Resetting the Lock

Three methods are available to reset your Premis lock:

1. Network Reset

A network reset removes the lock from your Premis app and HomeKit system. Users and schedules remain and will be rediscovered upon re-pairing. Perform via the Premis app or by pressing and holding Button "A" on the back panel for 7 seconds until the lock beeps once.

2. System Reset

A system reset removes the lock from your Premis app and HomeKit system, removes all users, schedules, and user codes (app-added and direct-programmed), disables Auto-Lock, turns on the Status LED (if off), re-enables SecureScreen™ (if disabled), and unmutes sound (if muted). Perform by pressing and holding Button "A" on the back panel for 20 seconds. The lock will beep after 7 seconds; continue holding until a second beep is heard.

3. Factory Reset

A factory reset performs all actions of a System Reset and also initiates the door handing process. To perform a factory reset:

  1. Remove battery pack.
  2. Press and HOLD the Program button while reinserting the battery pack. Keep holding for 30 seconds until the lock beeps and the Status LED flashes red.
  3. Press the Program button once more. The Status LED will flash green and red several times.
  4. After a few seconds, the lock will initiate the door handing process, and the latch bolt will extend and retract to learn the orientation of the door.

  • Protect your user codes and mastercode.
  • Familiarize yourself with all warning and caution statements.
  • Remind all family members of safety precautions.
  • Dispose of used batteries according to local laws and regulations.
  • Always have access to your lock's standard key.
  • Replace low batteries immediately.
  • Protect the password to your Premis app.
  • Protect your phone by enabling Touch ID and/or setting a passcode.
  • When sending a user code, always double-check that you are sending it to the correct recipient.
  • Protect and restrict access to your smartphone so that your app settings cannot be altered without your knowledge.

CAUTION: Prevent unauthorized entry. Since anyone with access to the back panel can change the user codes, you must restrict access to the back panel and routinely check the user codes to ensure they have not been altered without your knowledge. The use of a mastercode can help protect your settings.

No lock can substitute for caution, awareness of your environment, and common sense. Builder's hardware is available in multiple performance grades to suit the application. In order to enhance security and reduce risk, you should consult a qualified locksmith or other security professional.
