1 Prepare the Door and Check Dimensions
If drilling a new door, use the supplied template and complete door drilling instructions available at www.kwikset.com/doorprep.
A. Measure Door Hole Diameter
Confirm the hole in the door is either 2-1/8" (54 mm) or 1-1/2" (38 mm).
Note: Additional door preparation may be required for doors with 1-1/2" (38 mm) holes. Consult the deadbolt drilling instructions at www.kwikset.com/doorprep.
B. Measure Backset
Confirm the backset is either 2-3/8" or 2-3/4" (60 or 70 mm).
C. Measure Door Edge Hole
Confirm the hole in the door edge is 1" (25 mm).
D. Measure Door Thickness
Confirm the door is between 1-3/8" and 2" (35 mm and 51 mm) thick.
2 Install the Latch and Strike
A. Check Door Edge
Is the door edge chiseled? If yes, use latch "A". If the latch bolt is not already extended, extend it. If no, use latch "B". If the latch bolt is not already extended, extend it.
B. Position Latch
Hold the latch in front of the door hole, with the latch face flush against the door edge.
C. Center D-shaped Hole
Is the D-shaped hole centered in the door hole? If yes, no adjustment is required. Proceed to the next step. If no, rotate the latch face as shown to extend the latch.
D. Select Latch Type
Choose between Latch "A" or Latch "B". Ensure the "UP" indicator is on top for both.
E. Install Strike
Install the strike on the door frame. Ensure the hole in the door frame is drilled a minimum of 1" (25 mm) deep. Use longer screws (Q) closest to the door jamb for maximum security.
3 Install the Exterior Assembly
A. Verify Door Hole Diameter
Confirm the door hole diameter is 2-1/8" (54 mm) or 1-1/2" (38 mm). If the diameter is 2-1/8", "E" (Adapter ring) is required for installation. If the diameter is 1-1/2", "E" is not needed.
B. Locate Screws
Locate screws (S) for step 3C.
C. Install Exterior Assembly and Mounting Plate
- Ensure the cable goes underneath the latch.
- Support the exterior assembly during mounting plate installation.
- Route the cable through the center hole, then push the cable into the bottom hole.
- Rotate the torque blade to align with the D-shaped hole.
- Keep the assembly parallel to the edge of the door.
- Tighten screws (S) evenly.
- Insert a key and test the latch. If the latch does not extend or retract smoothly, adjust screws (S). Remove the key when finished and ensure the latch bolt is fully extended.
4 Install the Interior Assembly
A. Prepare Interior Assembly
Remove the battery cover and battery pack from the interior assembly. Ensure the turnpiece is in the vertical position.
B. Connect Cables and Install
- Ensure a tight cable connection. Align the cable.
- Lay excess cable flat inside the bottom of the interior housing.
- Push the turnpiece shaft onto the torque blade.
- Secure the assembly with screws (U) into the bottom hole.
Note: Do not install batteries yet.
5 Perform the Door Handing Process
This step teaches the lock the orientation of your door, which is crucial for lock operation.
A. Install Batteries
Install 4 AA batteries (L) into the battery pack (J). Ensure correct polarity. Use new, non-rechargeable Alkaline batteries only.
B. Insert Battery Pack
Make sure the door is open. Insert the battery pack.
C. Door Handing Process
After a few seconds, the latch bolt will retract and extend on its own to learn the door's orientation. This is the door handing process.
D. Check Result
Once complete, the touchscreen will indicate success (flashing checkmark symbol and single column of digits) or failure (flashing "X" pattern).
If the touchscreen indicates a failure, perform the manual door handing procedure on page 10 or consult the online User Guide at www.kwikset.com/support/guides/premis-user.
6 Install the Interior Cover
Install the interior cover (K) and secure it with screws (V).
7 OPTIONAL: Re-key the Lock
If desired, the lock can be re-keyed to work with your existing key. Refer to the supplied SmartKey Re-key instructions for more information.
8 Download the Premis App and Pair Your Lock to Your Phone
A. Download App
Download the Premis app from the App Store.
B. Pair Lock
Follow the instructions inside the app to pair your smartphone, manage lock settings, and send user codes to family and friends.

- Always have access to your lock's standard key.
- Replace low batteries immediately.
- Protect the password to your Premis app.
- Protect your phone by enabling Touch ID and/or setting a passcode.
- When sending a user code, always double-check that you are sending it to the correct recipient.
- Protect and restrict access to your smartphone so that your app settings cannot be altered without your knowledge.
CAUTION: Prevent unauthorized entry.
