Kasa Smart Wi-Fi 3-Way Dimmer KS230 KIT Quick Start Guide
Model: KS230 KIT
Introduction
This guide provides instructions for installing and setting up the Kasa Smart Wi-Fi 3-Way Dimmer Kit (KS230 KIT). This kit includes a main dimmer and a satellite dimmer. They are designed to work together and cannot be used separately or with traditional 3-way switches.
Before You Start
Important Notes:
- The main and satellite dimmers are distinct and must be installed in their correct wallboxes.
- Detailed wiring instructions are available in the Kasa Smart app.
App Download:
Download the Kasa Smart app from the [App Store] or [Google Play].
Wiring Preparation:
- Turn off the circuit breaker supplying power to the existing switches. Remove the wallplates from the two existing 3-way switches.
- Identify Wires: Familiarize yourself with the wires in the wallboxes. Typical wire colors and functions are:
- Line (Live/Hot): Usually black. Connects to the circuit breaker on one end and the first 3-way switch on the other.
- Load: Usually black. Connects to the light fixture on one end and the second 3-way switch on the other.
- Travelers: Usually one black and one red. These wires carry power between the two 3-way switches.
- Neutral: Usually a bundle of white wires, often not connected to traditional switches. They may be folded back in the wallbox.
- Ground: Usually green or bare copper.
Note: Wire colors may vary based on local electrical codes. The colors used in this guide are based on the National Electric Code (NEC) recommendations.
- Label the two Traveler wires in both wallboxes. It is not necessary to distinguish between the two traveler wires.
- Disconnect the Line/Load wires from the existing switches. Securely cover the disconnected ends with the provided [wire nuts] for safety.
- Identify Line and Load Wires:
- Turn the circuit breaker back on. Use a [voltage detector] to identify the energized wire (Line wire). Take care to avoid electric shocks.
- Turn the circuit breaker off again. Label the identified Line wire. This wallbox is for the main dimmer.
- Label the remaining wire in the other wallbox as the Load wire. This wallbox is for the satellite dimmer.
- Label the Neutral wire in the main dimmer's wallbox, and the Ground wires in both wallboxes.
Wiring the Smart 3-Way Dimmer
Disconnect all wires from the old switches. Connect the wires to the Smart 3-Way Dimmer components as follows:
Main Dimmer Connections:
- Connect the Line wire (from power source) to the "Line" terminal on the main dimmer.
- Connect the Load wire (to light bulbs) to the "Load" terminal on the main dimmer.
- Connect one Traveler wire to the "Traveler" terminal on the main dimmer.
- Connect the Neutral wire to the "Neutral" terminal on the main dimmer.
- Connect the Ground wire to the "Ground" terminal on the main dimmer.
Satellite Dimmer Connections:
- Connect the other Traveler wire to the "Traveler" terminal on the satellite dimmer.
- Connect the Neutral wire to the "Neutral" terminal on the satellite dimmer.
- Connect the Ground wire to the "Ground" terminal on the satellite dimmer.
Troubleshooting: If the main dimmer LED blinks red quickly after installation, it indicates incorrect wiring. Please recheck the wiring. Consulting an electrician is recommended.
Set Up Your 3-Way Dimmer
- Download App: Get the Kasa Smart app from the [App Store] or [Google Play].
- Setup: Open the Kasa Smart app. Tap the '+' button, select 'Smart Switches', then 'Smart 3-Way Dimmer'. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the setup.

Safety Notice
Before installing, servicing, or removing the switch, read and follow all safety precautions, including the following:
- CAUTION: Risk of Electric Shock. More than one disconnect switch may be required to de-energize the equipment before servicing. A circuit breaker that disconnects both the Line and Neutral conductors simultaneously is suitable. Ensure power is off at the circuit breaker before removing or installing any switch. Use a non-contact voltage tester to confirm power is off.
- The Smart Switch must be installed and used in accordance with the National Electric Code (NEC) or your local electrical code. If you are unfamiliar with these codes and requirements, or are uncomfortable performing the installation, consult a qualified electrician.
- Do not install the Smart Switch with wet hands or while standing on wet or damp surfaces.
- Install only in a suitable UL Listed outlet box with appropriate dimensions (e.g., H > 2.95 in./75 mm, W > 1.81 in./46 mm, D > 2 in./51 mm).
- Tighten terminal screws to 13 lbf-in for the main dimmer switch and 11 lbf-in for the satellite switch.
- Keep the device away from water, fire, humidity, or hot environments.
- Do not attempt to disassemble, repair, or modify the device. Contact TP-Link for service needs.
- Do not use the device where wireless devices are not allowed.
