Installation
Step 1: Connecting Antenna to a TV with a Digital Tuner
Determine where the antenna plug is located on your TV set and its configuration: Horizontal or Vertical (See Figure 1).
Figure 1 Description: Illustrates the rear panel of a television set, highlighting the antenna connection ports. It shows two common configurations: 'Horizontal Mount', where the antenna plug is positioned horizontally, and 'Vertical Mount', where the plug is vertical, requiring a right-angle connector.
The Clear TV Key should be mounted in the vertical position (extending upward). If your TV set has the antenna plug connection facing downward, the right-angle coax connector will be used (See Figure 2).
Figure 2 Description: Displays a close-up of the 90° F male to F female right-angle connector, which is used to facilitate vertical mounting of the antenna when the TV's antenna port is oriented downwards.
Attach the Clear TV Key antenna to the TV's antenna plug. Simply screw the connector into the 'Antenna In' or 'Cable In' port. If the right-angle connector is needed, attach it to the antenna first, and then to the TV. Ensure the antenna is mounted vertically as shown. When in the correct position, tighten the connectors (See Figure 3).
Figure 3 Description: Shows a step-by-step visual guide for connecting the antenna. The first image shows the right-angle connector being attached to the antenna's coaxial cable. The second image shows the connector being screwed into the TV's 'ANTENNA IN' or 'CABLE IN' port, with the antenna positioned vertically.
Step 1 (Continued): Connecting Antenna to a TV without a Digital Tuner
Attach the antenna to the STB (Set Top Box) by screwing the connector into the 'Antenna In' or 'Cable In' port on the back of your set-top box converter box (STB). Then, connect your STB to your television (See Figure 4).
Figure 4 Description: Illustrates the connection process for televisions without a built-in digital tuner. It shows the Clear TV Key antenna's coaxial cable connecting to the 'ANT IN' port on the back of a Set-Top Converter Box (STB). The STB is then shown connected to the television. The diagram labels the antenna as 'FREE TV KEY ANTENNA' and the connection type as 'STANDARD 75 ohm COAX CONNECTION'.
Note: After installation, use your Set Top Box to check signal strength and quality. If the picture is not steady, move the antenna to a better reception position.
Step 2: Auto Program Scan
Using your TV's remote control, navigate to the system menu and set the TV's input to 'Antenna'. Then, begin an auto search or auto program to find new stations (See Figure 5). Clear TV Key is recommended for use with TV transmitting stations within 10-25 miles.
Figure 5 Description: Presents two elements: a television screen displaying an 'Auto Program' setup menu, indicating that the TV is actively scanning for channels and showing reception status ('11%'). Below this, an image of a TV remote control is shown, highlighting common buttons used for navigation and settings, such as 'MENU', 'VOL', 'CH', 'SEARCH', and 'TOOLS'.
Step 3: Adjusting Antenna Location
To maximize the number of stations, you may need to adjust or reposition the antenna. Try placement in alternate locations and re-scan for new channels. Clear TV Key is recommended for use within 0-25 miles of broadcasting towers.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Clear TV Key?
A government mandate requires television broadcasters to convert from analog to digital broadcast. Now, only digital signals are available over the air in the United States and Canada. Clear TV Key is an antenna that receives over-the-air digital and HD signals for free. The signal offers better visual and audio quality than analog. Digital television enables broadcasters to offer multiple programming choices on a single channel (sub channels), greatly expanding viewer choices.
How many channels can I receive over the air?
Reception varies based on factors like geography, broadcast signal location, antenna placement, hills, buildings, and tall trees, all of which can impact reception. It is recommended to be within 25 miles of a broadcast antenna. Most households can receive popular networks such as PBS, NBC, CBS, ABC, FOX, ION, CW, Qubo (a children's channel), 24-hour sports programming, a 24-hour classic movie channel, 24-hour news and weather. Popular Spanish-language channels like Azteca, Univision, Telemundo, and TeleFutura may also be available.
Will I receive Cable shows?
No, Clear TV Key does not receive shows that are produced for cable only.
Will it fit all Televisions?
Clear TV Key connects with televisions that have an 'Antenna IN' or 'Cable IN' port on the back. Most televisions sold after May 25, 2007, are required by law to have a built-in ATSC (Digital) tuner and will receive digital broadcasts. If your television was purchased earlier but has a menu option for scanning digital channels, it likely has a digital ATSC tuner. Check for the letters 'ATSC'. If it does not indicate an ATSC tuner, you will need to purchase a converter box.
Do I need an amplifier?
The Clear TV Key connects directly to the TV. An optional accessory amplifier can be added to boost the signal strength.
Can I add an extension cable to my Clear TV Key?
Yes, if you wish to move your Clear TV Key to a different location, you can purchase an extension cable and stand.
Are all broadcasts now in High Definition?
Not all digital signals are High Definition.
Is the picture better than cable?
All cable companies compress their HD signals, resulting in a degraded signal that is usually inferior to Over the Air (OTA) broadcasts.
What is signal compression?
Signal compression is a method of making video transmissions smaller. The signal quality is degraded to fit more quantity. Cable companies compress their signals to make room for more channels. OTA broadcast television signals are not compressed.
Does Clear TV Key work with my DVR or TIVO?
Yes, Clear TV Key is compatible with TiVo and other digital video recorders (DVR), allowing you to watch what you want, when you want. Since Clear TV Key is an HD antenna and can receive HD broadcast signals, an HD converter box is not needed.
Will the channel numbers be the same?
With the digital system, the channel number displayed on your television screen may differ from the actual channel number. Many stations have sub-channels (e.g., channel 2, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3). Keep in mind that reception will vary based on your area's geography and proximity to broadcast antennas.
What if I can't receive a signal with Clear TV Key?
Signal strength varies based on factors such as distance from the transmitter, hills, buildings, and tall trees, which can impact reception. To check the exact distance to the nearest transmitters and understand expected reception, visit antennaweb.org and enter your address. It is recommended to be within 25 miles of a broadcast antenna.
