17. Information on Body Composition
Principle of body composition calculation
Body fat has low electric conductivity. HBF-222T measures body fat percentage using the Bioelectrical Impedance (BI) method. Muscles, blood vessels, and bones have high water content and conduct electricity easily. Body fat has low conductivity. The unit sends a weak electrical current (50 kHz, <500 µA) through the body, which is not felt during operation. The unit uses electrical impedance, along with height, weight, age, and gender information, to generate results based on OMRON's body composition data.
Recommended measurement times
Understanding normal changes in body fat percentage helps in preventing or reducing obesity. Using the unit in the same environment and daily circumstances assists in obtaining accurate trending.
Recommended times:
- After waking up
- Before lunch and about 2 hours or more after breakfast
- In the afternoon about 2 hours or more after lunch and before taking a bath or eating dinner
- Before going to bed and about 2 hours or more after dinner or bath
Avoid measurement under the following conditions:
- Immediately after vigorous exercise, after a bath or sauna.
- After drinking alcohol or a large amount of water, after a meal (about 2 hours).
Measurements taken under these conditions may differ significantly from actual values due to changes in body water content.
What is BMI (Body Mass Index)?
BMI is the ratio between weight and height.
BMI = weight (kg) / height (m) / height (m)
The OMRON HBF-222T calculates BMI classification using stored personal data or guest mode information. A high BMI may indicate an increased likelihood of common diseases, though it does not reveal all types of fat.
What is Body Fat Percentage?
Body fat percentage refers to the amount of body fat mass relative to total body weight, expressed as a percentage.
Body fat percentage (%) = {Body fat mass (kg) / Body weight (kg)} × 100
The HBF-222T estimates body fat percentage using the BI method. Fat is classified as visceral fat or subcutaneous fat based on distribution.
What is Visceral Fat Level?
Visceral fat is fat surrounding internal organs. Excess visceral fat is linked to increased blood fat levels, potentially leading to hyperlipidemia and diabetes. High visceral fat levels are often associated with a large stomach, but can also occur in individuals with normal weight (metabolic obesity).
What is Subcutaneous Fat?
Subcutaneous fat is fat below the skin. It accumulates around the stomach, upper arms, hips, and thighs, affecting body proportions. While not directly linked to disease risk, it can increase pressure on the heart. Subcutaneous fat is included in the body fat percentage but not displayed separately by this unit.
What is Skeletal Muscle?
Skeletal muscle is attached to bones and used for body movement. It can be increased through exercise. A higher skeletal muscle ratio helps the body burn energy more easily, reducing fat accumulation and promoting an energetic lifestyle.
What is Resting Metabolism?
Resting metabolism is the minimum caloric intake required to sustain the body's everyday functions, regardless of activity level. It indicates the number of calories needed for basic bodily functions.
What is Body Age?
Body age is based on resting metabolism. It is calculated as a guide to indicate whether your overall body composition profile (weight, body fat percentage, skeletal muscle percentage) is above or below the average for your actual age. Knowing your body age can help improve your health condition.
