Using the Owner's Manual
Familiarize yourself with your Volvo's features and functions before driving. Pay close attention to safety warnings. The manual covers standard equipment, options (*), and accessories (*). Modifications to the vehicle may cause differences between the manual and your specific car.
Decals: Various decals provide important information. Risk of injury decals are black ISO symbols on yellow fields. Risk of damage decals are white ISO symbols on black/blue fields. Information decals are white ISO symbols on black fields.
Procedures: Instructions are presented in numbered lists. Arrows indicate movement direction.
Related Information: Links to other relevant sections are provided.
Important Information on Accessories and Extra Equipment
Use only genuine, Volvo-approved accessories installed by a trained Volvo technician to avoid adverse effects on vehicle electronics. Unapproved accessories or improper installation may void the warranty.
California Proposition 65 Warning: Engine exhaust, vehicle components, and fluids may contain chemicals known to the state of California to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm.
Perchlorate Materials: Some components like airbag modules may contain perchlorate materials requiring special handling.
Driver Distraction
Avoid distractions while driving. Never use hand-held cellular telephones, program navigation systems or audio systems while driving. Park the vehicle for such operations.

Safety
Volvo vehicles are equipped with integrated safety systems designed to protect occupants. These include airbags, seat belt tensioners, and the Whiplash Protection System (WHIPS).
Safety System Warnings
A warning symbol [!] in the instrument panel indicates ignition mode II. If a safety system warning light remains illuminated or activates while driving, accompanied by an SRS airbag service message, it indicates a malfunction. Contact an authorized Volvo workshop immediately. Do not attempt to repair safety systems yourself.
Safety During Pregnancy
Pregnant occupants should wear seat belts correctly, ensuring the lap section lies flat over the hips and the diagonal section is between the breasts and to the side of the stomach. Adjust seating position for optimal control.
Occupant Safety
Safe driving depends on vision, concentration, and decision-making. Avoid alcohol and medication that impairs driving. Regular eye checks, clean windows, and proper wiper maintenance are crucial. Never text while driving.
Reporting Safety Defects
To report safety defects in the U.S., contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) at 1-888-327-4236 or visit www.safercar.gov. In Canada, contact Transport Canada at 1-800-333-0510.
Recall Information
Check for vehicle recalls on the Volvo Cars website or NHTSA's website (www.nhtsa.gov) using your VIN. Contact your Volvo retailer or Volvo Customer Relations for recall inquiries.
Whiplash Protection System (WHIPS)
WHIPS is designed to reduce whiplash injuries in rear-end collisions. It features energy-absorbing seats and head restraints. Do not place objects that could impede its function. Seats subjected to severe stress should be replaced.
Seat Belts
All occupants must wear seat belts. Seat belts should be checked periodically for condition. Never repair belts yourself. Ensure the shoulder belt is taut and correctly positioned.
Buckling and Unbuckling: Pull the belt slowly, ensure it's not twisted, and buckle it securely. The belt retractor locks automatically during braking, acceleration, or sharp turns. An Automatic Locking Retractor (ALR) function is available for child restraints.
Height Adjustment: Front seat belts can be adjusted for height.
Seat Belt Tensioners: Standard and electric tensioners tighten belts in critical situations or collisions. They can interact with driver support systems.
Door and Seat Belt Reminders: Visual and audible alerts remind occupants to buckle up and indicate open doors or the trunk lid.
Airbags
The vehicle is equipped with front, side, and inflatable curtain airbags. The SRS AIRBAG warning light indicates system status. If illuminated, have the vehicle inspected by an authorized Volvo workshop. Never attempt to repair airbag systems yourself.
Driver/Passenger-Side Front Airbags: Deploy in frontal or front-angular collisions to protect the head, face, chest, knees, and legs. They are supplementary to seat belts. Passengers should sit upright with feet on the floor.
Occupant Weight Sensor (OWS): Disables the passenger front airbag for occupants below a certain weight or height, or when specific child restraints are detected. The 'PASSENGER AIRBAG OFF' indicator lamp confirms this.
Side Airbags: Located in the front seats, protecting the chest and hip. Do not place objects between the seat and door panel.
Inflatable Curtain (IC): Installed along the roof, protecting occupants' heads in side impacts. Do not hang heavy objects from ceiling handles or modify headlining/pillars.
Safety Mode
Activated after a collision if critical systems are potentially damaged. A message 'Safety mode See Owner's manual' may appear. If fuel fumes are detected, evacuate the vehicle. If minor damage and no fumes, attempt to restart. If the message persists, the vehicle must be towed by a tow truck.
Child Safety
Volvo recommends proper restraint systems for all occupants, especially children. Children should always be in the rear seat. Holding a child in your arms is not a substitute for a restraint system.
Child Restraints: Use approved infant seats, convertible seats, or booster cushions. Ensure they are correctly installed according to manufacturer instructions. Rear-facing is recommended for children up to age 4, and as long as possible.
ISOFIX/LATCH Anchors: Located in rear outboard seats for easier child seat installation. Top tether anchors are also provided in the rear seat.
Warnings: Never use child seats in the front passenger seat with an active airbag. Do not leave children unattended in a vehicle, especially on hot days. Child restraints should not be reused after a collision or if their history is unknown.
Displays and Voice Control
Your Volvo features advanced displays and voice control for information and entertainment.
Instrument Panel
The instrument panel (available in 12" or 8" versions) displays driving information, indicators, and warnings. It is activated when a door is opened. Key information includes speedometer, tachometer, fuel gauge, trip computer, media status, and warning symbols.
Instrument Panel Settings: Customize displayed information (trip computer, media, phone, navigation) and select display themes (Glass, Minimalistic, Performance, Chrome Rings) via the center display's settings menu.
Fuel Gauge & Trip Computer
The fuel gauge indicates the fuel level. The trip computer tracks mileage, fuel consumption, average speed, and distance to empty. Data can be displayed in the instrument panel and graphically in the center display's 'Driver performance' app.
Trip Odometer: TM and TA odometers record mileage and driving data. TM can be reset manually; TA resets automatically after 4 hours of inactivity.
Date and Time
The clock is displayed in both the instrument panel and center display. Settings can be adjusted via the center display's 'Settings' menu. Vehicles with navigation systems may feature automatic time synchronization.
Ambient Temperature Sensor
The sensor displays the outside temperature. A snowflake symbol [❄️] appears below +2°C (+36°F) as a warning for potential slippery conditions.
Indicator and Warning Symbols
Various symbols alert the driver to activated functions (e.g., turn signals [➡️], high beams [?]) or system faults (e.g., brake system fault [!] , airbag fault [!] ). Refer to the manual for detailed symbol meanings.
Instrument Panel Licenses
Contains various software license agreements, including Boost Software License, BSD licenses, FreeType Project License, Libpng License, MIT License, and zlib License. These govern the use of software components within the vehicle's systems.
App Menu in Instrument Panel
Provides quick access to functions like the trip computer, media player, and phone via the right-side steering wheel keypad. It allows switching between apps without removing hands from the wheel.
Messages in the Instrument Panel
High-priority messages appear in the instrument panel, often with accompanying symbols or buttons. Service messages (e.g., 'Stop safely', 'Service urgent') require immediate attention and a visit to a workshop. Messages can be saved to the 'Car status' app.
