Getting Started: Battery Installation

Your Aeotec by Aeon Labs Panic Button uses wireless technology to communicate with your Z-Wave network. To prepare it for setup and use, you must insert its batteries.

Visual Description of Components:

The package includes: the Panic Button device, a coin-shaped battery (Lithium Cell 3V), and a small metal pin.

  1. Step 1: Slide the rear battery cover away from the remote to expose the battery compartment.
  2. Step 2: Insert the provided battery into the compartment. Ensure the '+' side of the battery, which is flatter and has text, is facing upwards.
  3. Step 3: Reattach the rear battery cover to the remote and close it firmly.

Z-Wave Network Setup

Setting Up as a Secondary Remote Control

Your Panic Button can be set up as a secondary remote control for your Z-Wave network. This is ideal for including it in an existing Z-Wave network. You will need to be near your existing primary Z-Wave controller and have the Panic Button with you.

  1. Step 1: Press the Include/Remove button on your primary Z-Wave controller. Refer to its user manual if you are unsure how to do this.
  2. Step 2: Using the provided Button pin, press the Learn button on the Panic Button. Its green LED will begin to pulse.
  3. Step 3: Once the two devices have exchanged information, the green LED on the Panic Button will stay lit for 2 seconds.

Button Locations: The Panic Button features buttons labeled "+/- (Include/Remove)" and "Learn". It also has a "Main Action Button" and a "Green/Red LED" indicator.

Setting Up as a Primary Controller

Your Panic Button can also be set up as the primary controller of a Z-Wave network. This is suitable if you are starting a new Z-Wave network or intend to set up only a small one.

In this configuration, you need to associate your Z-Wave devices with the Panic Button. This will, by default, set up a new Z-Wave network for you. For detailed instructions, refer to 'Adding devices to your Z-Wave network' in the Advanced Functions section of this manual.

Configuring Emergency Scenes

With your Panic Button integrated into your Z-Wave network, you can define what happens in an emergency. Your Panic Button can activate or turn on any device within the network.

During the following steps, you will associate Z-Wave devices with your Panic Button and determine their specific actions during an emergency. For example, your Panic Button might be configured to open a motorized blind to 50% of its height. Ensure that each Z-Wave device is not already in the desired state before beginning. For instance, if setting a blind to 50% open, ensure it is fully closed beforehand.

  1. Step 1: Press and hold the Panic Button's Main Action Button. Do not release it for several seconds. The Panic Button's green LED will pulse quickly, indicating it is ready to communicate with other Z-Wave devices.
  2. Step 2: Press the Z-Wave network button on the device you wish to activate in the event of an emergency. Refer to its user manual if you are unsure how to do this.
  3. Step 3: If your Panic Button and the Z-Wave device are successfully communicating, the Panic Button's green LED will stop blinking and remain solidly illuminated for 2 seconds.
  4. Step 4: Change the Z-Wave device's status to match the desired outcome of your emergency scene. For example, turn a Z-Wave device from 'off' to 'on' if that is your desired action. In the previous example, you would set your motorized blind to be 50% open.
  5. Step 5: Release the Main Action Button you held down in Step 1.
  6. Step 6: If the Panic Button's green LED does not change in Step 3, it means it is unable to communicate with the Z-Wave device. Repeat the process, ensuring your primary Z-Wave controller is in Include mode and that both your Panic Button and the Z-Wave device are within 3 meters of each other.
  7. Step 7: If you want your Panic Button to control multiple devices, repeat the above steps for each device.

Managing Z-Wave Devices

Adding Devices to Your Network

When set up within your network, the Panic Button can add Z-Wave devices to the same network.

  1. Step 1: Press and release the Include/Remove button. Your Panic Button's green LED will pulse slowly.
  2. Step 2: Press the Z-Wave network button on the device you wish to add. Refer to its user manual if you are unsure how to do this.
  3. Step 3: Once the device has been included, the green LED on the Panic Button will stay lit for 2 seconds, then blink again.
  4. Step 4: Repeat Step 2 for any other devices you wish to add to your network.
  5. Step 5: Once finished, press any button on the Panic Button to exit device inclusion mode.

Removing Devices from Your Network

There may come a time when you no longer wish for the Panic Button to control certain devices. To remove a device from your Panic Button's control:

  1. Step 1: Press and hold your Panic Button's action button. Do not release it. Your remote's green LED will blink quickly, indicating it is ready to understand which devices you no longer want it to control.
  2. Step 2: Press the Z-Wave network button on the device you wish to remove. Refer to its user manual if you are unsure how to do this.
  3. Step 3: Your Panic Button's green LED will stop blinking, and its red LED will illuminate for 2 seconds.
  4. Step 4: Release the Main Action Button you held down in Step 1. Your Panic Button will now stop communicating with the removed Z-Wave device.
  5. Step 5: Repeat the above steps for any other Z-Wave devices you do not want your Panic Button to directly control.

Resetting Your Panic Button

If you ever need to completely reset your Panic Button's settings, you can do so as follows:

  1. Step 1: Using the provided Button pin, press and hold both the Learn and Include/Remove buttons for 10 seconds.
  2. Step 2: If successful, the green and red LEDs on the front of your Panic Button will blink in an alternate pattern, followed by the green LED illuminating for 2 seconds.
  3. Step 3: If unsuccessful, the red LED will illuminate for 2 seconds. If this occurs, repeat the process again.

Advanced Features

Dimming Control

[TIP] While designed for emergency situations, the Panic Button's one-button remote control functionality can be used for other scenarios. For instance, the primary button can communicate with various Z-Wave devices, from lighting to garage doors. An additional functionality is dimming.

When held down, the Main Action Button sends 'up' and 'down' instructions to compatible Z-Wave devices. With a dimmable light, holding down the Main Action Button will cause it to brighten or dim depending on its current level of brightness.

Using with Z-Wave Gateways

Your Panic Button can directly control Z-Wave devices. Alternatively, your Z-Wave network may use a Z-Wave gateway as its central controller. If so, you can configure the gateway to perform specific actions when an emergency occurs, triggered by your Panic Button.

You define the emergency and its outcome. For example, you could set up a gateway to send a text message when your Panic Button is activated.

Each gateway is different, so refer to its manual or help files to create an emergency scenario. A sample scenario might be:

  1. Step 1: When pressed, your Panic Button should activate a siren. It sends a signal to your gateway to activate an emergency scene/scenario.
  2. Step 2: Your gateway receives the command from your Panic Button.
  3. Step 3: Your siren turns on.

Z-Wave gateways can offer advanced functionality such as recording video and sending emails, all of which can be relevant to an emergency situation.
