Congratulations!

Thank you for purchasing the SmartSet® Clock Radio from Emerson Research. SmartSet® is the world's first and only LED clock radio that will automatically set itself to the correct ‘Year', 'Month', 'Date', 'Day', and 'Time' as soon as you plug it in. You only need to tell the SmartSet® your time zone, and the built-in computer handles the rest. This automatic setting works not only the first time but also after any power interruption.

Say goodbye to the annoying flashing "12:00" display that indicates a power outage during the night. The SmartSet® Clock Radio automatically resets itself once power is restored, ensuring you wake up on time.

Furthermore, the SmartSet® computer automatically adjusts for Daylight Saving Time and Leap Years for the next 99 years. It also features a long-life lithium battery backup, eliminating the need to replace a 9-volt battery every six months. The built-in CR2430 lithium battery can last up to 5 years, and a low battery indicator will alert you when replacement is needed. This feature offers significant cost savings on batteries.

The SmartSet® offers dual alarms that can be set for weekdays only, weekends only, or all 7 days. You can use one alarm for a buzzer wake-up on weekdays and the second alarm for music on weekends. Emerson Research is the sole provider of this advanced technology, recognized by Good Housekeeping magazine with the “Good Buy 2000 Award” for its innovation.

We are confident you will enjoy many years of dependable service from your SmartSet® Clock Radio.

For future reference, record the Serial Number here: _________________________

PREPARATION FOR USE

UNPACKING AND SET UP

  • Remove the radio from the carton and all packing material. Save the packing material for potential service needs.
  • Remove any descriptive labels or stickers from the front or top of the cabinet. Do not remove labels or stickers from the back or bottom.
  • Note the serial number on the bottom of your radio and record it on page 1.
  • Place your radio on a level surface, away from direct sunlight and sources of excess heat, dirt, dust, moisture, humidity, or vibration. Ensure it is convenient to an AC outlet.
  • Unwind the AC power cord fully. The FM antenna is built into this cord and must be extended for best reception.

POWER SOURCE

This radio is designed for 110V-120V 60Hz AC power only. Using other power sources may cause damage not covered by warranty.

Connect the radio to an AC outlet that is always 'live' (not controlled by a wall switch). The built-in lithium battery maintains time and alarm settings during power interruptions. Keeping the radio connected to a live AC outlet maximizes the lithium battery's life.

The unit features a polarized AC power plug with one wider blade for safety. If this plug does not fit your outlet, you may have an outdated non-polarized outlet. Consult a qualified electrician to have your outlet changed.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS

SETTING THE TIME, THE FIRST TIME

Upon first connection to AC power, the internal computer automatically sets the time for the Eastern Time Zone. If you reside in the Eastern Time Zone, no further action is needed. For other time zones, you must set your zone once, and the SmartSet® will remember it for future power interruptions.

The 7 programmed time zones are:

  • Zone 1: Atlantic Time
  • Zone 2: Eastern Time
  • Zone 3: Central Time
  • Zone 4: Mountain Time
  • Zone 5: Pacific Time
  • Zone 6: Yukon Time
  • Zone 7: Hawaiian Time

To change the time zone: Depress the Time Zone button. The display will show '2' (Eastern Time). Hold the Time Zone button and press Up or Down buttons until your desired zone appears. Release buttons. The clock will update to the correct time for the selected zone. This setting persists through power interruptions.

DATE DISPLAY

To view the date, depress the Date button. The display will show Month/Date (MM/DD). Releasing the button returns the display to the time.

YEAR DISPLAY

To view the year, depress both the Time and Date buttons simultaneously. Releasing the buttons returns the display to the time.

DAYLIGHT SAVING AND LEAP YEAR ADJUSTMENTS

The SmartSet® computer automatically handles Daylight Saving Time and Leap Year adjustments:

  • Start of DST: First Sunday in April, 1:59:59 AM advances to 3:00 AM.
  • End of DST: Last Sunday in October, 2:59:59 AM resets to 2:00 AM.
  • Leap Year: February 28th, 12:00 AM changes calendar display to "2. 29".

MANUAL TIME ADJUSTMENTS

You can manually adjust the time if desired. Hold the Time button and press Up or Down to advance or rewind the time by one minute per press. Holding the buttons will change the time more rapidly.

Note: Manual time adjustments are saved in the SmartSet® memory and will be retained after power interruptions.

ADJUSTING THE WAKE UP TIMES

The clock radio features two independent alarms. The procedure for setting both Alarm 1 and Alarm 2 is the same.

  1. Depress and hold either the Alarm 1 or Alarm 2 setting button. The display will show the current wake-up time for that alarm.
  2. While holding the setting button, press Up or Down to adjust the wake-up time.
  3. Release the Up or Down buttons when the desired time is displayed.
  4. Release the Alarm 1 or Alarm 2 setting buttons when the desired AM/PM time is displayed (confirm with the AM indicator).

SELECTING THE ALARM MODE

Choose from three alarm operation modes for each alarm:

  • Weekdays only: Alarm activates Monday through Friday.
  • Weekends only: Alarm activates Saturday and Sunday.
  • Everyday: Alarm activates all 7 days.

To check the current Alarm Mode for Alarm 1, press the Alarm 1 setting button. The day indicators will show which mode is selected (all 7 'On' for Everyday, Mon-Fri 'On' for Weekdays, Sat-Sun 'On' for Weekends).

To change the Alarm Mode: Hold the Alarm 1 setting button and press the Alarm Mode button until the desired day indicators are lit. Release buttons to return to the correct time.

CHECKING THE WAKE UP TIMES AND ALARM MODE

Press either the Alarm 1 or Alarm 2 setting buttons to view the set wake-up time and the selected alarm mode.

LISTENING TO THE RADIO

  1. Set the Band selector to AM or FM.
  2. Set the Volume control to a low setting.
  3. Press the Radio On/Off button to turn the radio 'On'. The tuning dial pointer will light.
  4. Select your desired station using the Tuning control.
  5. Adjust the Volume control to your preferred level.
  6. Press the Radio On/Off button to turn the radio 'Off' when finished.

ANTENNA INFORMATION

  • AM: The AM bar antenna is inside the cabinet. Adjust the cabinet position for best reception if AM signal is weak.
  • FM: The FM antenna is built into the AC power cord. Extend and position the power cord for best FM reception if the signal is weak.

WAKE TO RADIO

  1. Turn the radio 'On', select the desired band, station, and volume, then turn the radio 'Off'.
  2. Confirm the wake-up time and alarm mode settings for Alarm 1, Alarm 2, or both.
  3. Set the Alarm selector switch for the desired alarm(s) to the ‘Radio' position. The corresponding Alarm indicators will light up.
  4. At the set wake-up time, the radio will turn 'On' and play for one hour before automatically shutting off.
  5. To stop the radio sooner, press the relevant Alarm 1 or Alarm 2 button, or the Radio On/Off button. The alarm remains set for the next day unless the selector is switched to 'Off'.

WAKE TO BUZZER

  1. Confirm the wake-up time and alarm mode settings for the alarm(s).
  2. Set the Alarm selector switch for the desired alarm(s) to the Buzzer (Buzz) position. The corresponding Alarm indicators will light up.
  3. At the set wake-up time, the buzzer will sound for one hour before automatically shutting off.
  4. To stop the buzzer sooner, press the relevant Alarm 1 or Alarm 2 button. The buzzer will stop but remains set for the next day unless the selector is switched to 'Off'. To immediately turn on the radio instead of the buzzer, press the Radio On/Off button.

RADIO AND BUZZER OPERATION

You can set one alarm for radio wake-up and the other for buzzer wake-up by setting the Alarm 1 and Alarm 2 selector switches accordingly.

SNOOZE ALARM

When the alarm sounds, press the Snooze Bar for approximately 9 minutes of additional sleep. The alarm will resume after this period. You can repeat this up to seven times; after the seventh snooze, the alarm will not reactivate.

SLEEP TO MUSIC TIMER

The sleep timer can be programmed to play the radio for up to 90 minutes before automatically shutting off.

  1. Press the Sleep On button. The display will show "10" and the radio will begin playing. It will shut off automatically after 10 minutes. Each press of the Sleep button sets the timer for an additional 10 minutes, up to a maximum of 90 minutes or a minimum of 2 minutes.
  2. To cancel the sleep timer before it reaches "00", press the Snooze Bar.

IMPORTANT: The station and volume settings for Sleep To Music are the same as those used for wake-to-radio alarms.

DIMMER CONTROL

The Dimmer control can be set to 'High' (factory default) or 'Low' if the clock display is too bright in a darkened room.

CHANGING THE LITHIUM BATTERY

The built-in lithium battery will eventually need replacement. Factors like storage time before first use can affect its lifespan. During initial storage, the battery powers the SmartSet® memory. Once plugged in, AC power takes over. A fresh lithium battery can power the memory for at least 3 years even without AC connection. With regular AC connection and minor power interruptions, it can last 5 years or longer.

When the battery is low, the Low Battery indicator will illuminate. Change the battery promptly:

  1. Purchase a replacement 3V lithium battery (CR2430 or equivalent).
  2. Remove the new battery from its package.
  3. Keep the radio connected to AC power while replacing the battery to maintain SmartSet® memory.
  4. Turn the radio upside down and use a small screwdriver to remove the screw securing the battery holder.
  5. Turn the radio right side up, remove the battery holder, replace the old battery with the new one (positive (+) side facing up), and slide the holder back into the cabinet.
  6. Turn the radio upside down again and replace the securing screw.
  7. Turn the radio right side up and confirm the Low Battery indicator is 'Off'.
  8. Save these instructions for future replacement (typically in 5-8 years).

Diagram Description: Illustration shows the battery compartment on the underside of the clock radio, with an arrow indicating the removal of a screw, and a depiction of the battery holder with the battery correctly oriented (positive side up).

RESETTING THE CLOCK AFTER A TOTAL MEMORY LOSS

If the lithium battery is not replaced within a reasonable time after the low battery indicator appears, it may exhaust, losing backup power for the SmartSet® memory. If the unit is disconnected from AC power after battery exhaustion, or during a power interruption, the memory will be lost, requiring a reset upon power restoration. Always install a fresh battery before resetting.

If the lithium battery is exhausted and a power interruption occurs, the clock will reset to its default setting (6:00 AM, Thursday, January 1st, 1998) upon power restoration. If the time, day, or year appears incorrect (e.g., year showing "1998"), a total memory loss has likely occurred.

To reset the clock after total memory loss:

  1. Install a new CR2430 lithium battery as described on page 10.
  2. Connect the radio to your AC outlet and allow the clock to set itself.
  3. Depress the Time and Date buttons together to view the year.
  4. While holding Time and Date buttons, press Up to set the correct year. Release buttons.
  5. Depress the Date button to view month/date (MM/DD).
  6. While holding the Date button, press Up to set the correct month and date. The Day indicator will adjust automatically. Release buttons when correct.
  7. Depress the Time button and the Up button to set the correct time. Verify the AM/PM setting using the AM indicator.
  8. Reconfirm that the Day and Month/Date displays are correct. Make any necessary final adjustments.

The SmartSet® memory is now reset and will be maintained by the new lithium battery for 5-8 years, depending on power outage frequency and duration.

IMPORTANT NOTE: After resetting the clock, remember to also reset your wake-up times, alarm modes, and sleep timer settings.

CARE AND MAINTENANCE

If the cabinet becomes dusty, wipe it with a soft cloth. For smudges or dirt, use a soft, slightly dampened cloth. Never allow water or liquid inside the cabinet. Avoid abrasive cleaners or cleaning pads, as they can damage the radio's finish.
