General Features
The Atkinson Dynamics intercom is a heavy-duty, 2-way, communications device designed for industrial applications. There are four basic models: AD-26 (12VDC), AD-56 (24VDC), AD-27 (120VAC 50/60 Hz), and AD-57 (240VAC 50/60 Hz). The AC line is fused with a 1/2 A, 250 V GMC fuse in the 120/240VAC units.

Unit Modes
Primary Units
The "C" models default to Primary, or speaker, mode. In Primary mode, the unit acts as a speaker and broadcasts audio signals generated elsewhere in the intercom system. Depressing the Talk switch turns the unit into a microphone and enables the user to broadcast to all other intercoms in the system. Releasing the switch returns the unit to Primary mode. Figures illustrating Primary/Secondary intercom systems are referenced throughout the manual.
Secondary Units
The "D" models default to Secondary, or microphone, mode. In Secondary mode, the unit is designed to serve as a hands-free microphone with transmission to all Primary units in the intercom system. The Secondary unit will act as a speaker and broadcast audio transmissions only when the Talk switch of any Primary unit in the intercom system is depressed.
Call Button
The "A" models are equipped with a Call switch. Depressing the call switch transmits an 890 Hz tone to all units in the intercom system.
CAUTION: The call signal is louder than normal voice messages. Do not depress the call switch while carrying on a conversation. This will subject the listener to very loud sound levels. The volume of the call signal is affected by the volume control on the receiving unit.
Microphone Options
The "-7" Hand-Held Noise Cancelling Microphones are recommended for environments with high levels of ambient noise. Keying the microphone overrides the default mode of the intercom and enables audio transmission to all Primary units.
The "M34" Headset Microphones and Belt Switches are an additional option for environments with high ambient noise. Keying the belt switch overrides the default mode and enables audio transmission to all Primary units.
Other Features
Remote Power: The "-1" models provide power to remote intercom units via the same cable used for audio. An AC-powered main unit provides 12 Volts DC-power and audio.
Pre-Amplifier: The "-8" models include a pre-amplifier for use with Secondary speaker units. The "-M44" option adds a volume control knob for remote speakers.
External Power Source: Allows configuration of systems using DC-powered Primary and Secondary units.
Surge Protection: Metal Oxide Varistor (MOV) devices protect audio lines. Earth or Chassis Ground termination is required for surge protection. AC models offer full short circuit and overheat protection.
Foot Pedal Ready: Models with the "-2" option are designed for hands-free Talk/Listen activation. A heavy-duty foot pedal (Model ADFP) is available.
Auxiliary Signal: Models with the "-3" option provide a call button contact closure for auxiliary devices like strobe lights. Atkinson Dynamics offers low-profile strobe lights.
Zoned System Remote: Models with the "-6" option are for zoned systems. A Primary intercom can select (via a switch box) to talk to any one or more remotes. Each remote has a Talk/Listen switch for communication to the Primary, even when its zone isn't selected. Atkinson Dynamics offers 6-zone and 12-zone switch boxes.
Monitor Switch: Models with the "-M22" option have a monitor on/off toggle switch. When on, the remote unit becomes a Secondary and defaults to talk mode.
Installation
Unpacking the Intercom
Examine the Atkinson Dynamics Intercom for transit damage. If damaged, do not install or operate; file a claim with the carrier. Check all envelopes, shipping labels, and tags. Dispose of shipping materials according to national and local codes. Contact Federal Signal Customer Support if parts are missing.

Mounting the Intercom
Select mounting location under the direction of facilities and safety engineers. Intercoms with flexible cords are not for permanent mounting. The intercom mounts on a flat, rigid surface using two mounting ears (13/32" diameter holes, 5.68" apart). Installer must provide mounting hardware. The unit is heavy and requires a rigid surface capable of supporting its weight.
For shipboard applications, follow United States Coast Guard, Title 46 CRF, Parts 110-113.
For noise-cancelling microphones, install the mounting clip on a rigid surface near the intercom, avoiding areas with excessive moisture or dust.
Electrical Connections
Plug each intercom into a nearby power source. Connect audio inputs in parallel. Audio wires should be sized by a licensed electrician.
An optional 1K, 1W resistor can be installed across audio lines to reduce noise in certain environments. Only one resistor is needed per system.
Service
Federal Signal provides service and technical assistance. Units returned for service must include a Return Material Authorization (RMA), obtainable by calling (708) 534-4756 or (877) 289-3246. Provide a brief explanation of the service requested or malfunction.
Address all communications and shipments to: ATKINSON DYNAMICS, Service Department, 2645 Federal Signal Drive, University Park, IL 60484-3167.

Wiring and System Configurations
The manual details various wiring configurations and operating principles for different intercom setups. Key aspects include:
- Operating Principles: Describes how units function in primary/secondary roles, call functions, and microphone usage.
- Power Connections: Specifies power sources (12-18VDC, 22-30VDC, 120V 50/60Hz, 240V 50/60Hz) and corresponding wire colors (BLK for +DC Power/HOT, WHT for Common/Neutral, GRN for Earth Ground).
- Audio Cable Connections: Details connections for audio lines, often using specific wire colors (BLK, WHT, RED, GRN) for different functions like AUDIO, CONTROL, COMMON.
- Model-Specific Configurations: The manual illustrates and describes systems involving Primary units (e.g., AD-26C, AD-27C), Secondary units (e.g., AD-26D, AD-27D), and various optional accessories like hand-held microphones, headsets, foot switches, and selector boxes.
- Wiring Reference Chart (Page 26): This chart provides a comprehensive overview of model numbers and their corresponding audio and power cable connections.
General Wiring Reminders:
- Take precautions to prevent feedback between units in close proximity or acoustically reflective areas.
- Use 16-20 gauge low voltage audio cable; twisted pair is not required.
- Shielded audio cable is not required unless operating in high electromagnetic fields. Ground one end of the shield to earth ground.
- Power cable type depends on the intercom model.
- A 7-foot cable is typically provided for audio and power.
