2 DESCRIPTION
The Raychem NRG-DM thermostat is a smart electronic thermostat designed for electrical underfloor heating. It controls underfloor heating to provide optimal comfort with minimal energy consumption. The NRG-DM features an ambient sensor and a floor sensor, enabling it to monitor and control heating cables in four modes: Room sensing, Floor sensing, Room sensing with floor limiter, or No sensor mode, based on user needs.
The NRG-DM switches the electrical floor heating on and off to achieve the set temperature. When the heating is active, a symbol (?) is displayed. The thermostat operates in three primary working modes:
Working mode | Description | Symbol |
---|---|---|
Constant Mode | Aims for a single target temperature, adjustable via the +/- buttons. | [Temperature adjustment] |
Event Mode | Operates according to a weekly schedule, designed to maximize comfort while minimizing energy consumption. | [Clock symbol] |
Boost Mode | A temporary override of Constant or Event Mode, allowing a user-defined temporary set temperature and duration. After the duration, it reverts to the previous mode. | ⚡ or [boost icon] |
3 NAVIGATION PRINCIPLE
The NRG-DM features a 1.8-inch display and three control buttons. The display elements include: 1. On/OFF switch, 2. Day and time, 3. Working Mode, 4. Heating Symbol (?), 5. Displayed temperature, 6. Command area, and 7. The three control buttons.
Figure 3 shows the display with these numbered elements. The left and right buttons adjust the set temperature by 0.5°C increments (indicated by "-" and "+"), while the middle button accesses the Menu.
4 GETTING STARTED
Upon initial power-up, the NRG-DM guides the user through a setup wizard with four questions: Select Language, Confirm Time, Confirm Date, and Select Sensor.
Figure 4-7 depict these setup screens. When selecting the sensor (Figure 7), options include:
- Factory: The sensor included with the NRG-DM.
- NRG-Temp: For retrofitting an NRG-Temp or Green Leaf thermostat.
- Other: For retrofitting with different sensor types (e.g., 2kΩ, 10kΩ, 12kΩ, 15kΩ, 33kΩ). For these, users may need to input reference values at specific temperatures (15°C, 20°C, 25°C, 30°C) or use standard table settings.
This wizard appears on first installation or after a factory reset (see Section 7.3.8).
5 NAVIGATION STRUCTURE
Navigating the NRG-DM menu is straightforward for activating modes or changing settings. Figure 8 illustrates the menu structure, leading to Working Modes (Boost, Event, Constant) or Settings.
The settings are categorized into three main areas:
- Event settings: For programming the weekly schedule (see Section 7.1).
- User settings: For minor adjustments by users (see Section 7.2).
- Engineer settings: For installers or advanced users (see Section 7.3).
Figure 9 shows how to select a working mode, and Figure 10 depicts the settings categories.
6 WORKING MODES
6.1 EVENT MODE (weekly schedule mode)
The Event Mode is the energy-efficient option, utilizing a customizable weekly schedule. The schedule is based on a 7-day cycle, with each day configurable into 1 to 6 events, each defined by a duration (From – To) and a temperature.
The default pre-programmed schedule is shown in Table 2:
Schedule | Period 1 | Period 2 | Period 3 | Period 4 | Period 5 | Period 6 | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Mon-Fri | 00:00-06:30 16°C |
06:30-08:30 23°C |
08:30-18:00 16°C |
18:00-21:00 23°C |
21:00-24:00 16°C |
N/A | |
Sat-Sun | 00:00-08:00 16°C |
08:00-24:00 23°C |
N/A |
Users can program or adapt the weekly schedule via the Event settings (Section 7.1). The Boost Mode can be temporarily activated to step away from the weekly schedule (Section 6.3).
6.2 CONSTANT MODE (single temperature mode)
In Constant Mode, the NRG-DM maintains a single target temperature, adjustable using the +/- buttons. This mode can also be temporarily overridden by activating the Boost Mode (Section 6.3).
6.3 BOOST MODE (temporary override mode)
Boost Mode temporarily overrides the current working mode (Constant or Event). Upon expiry, the thermostat returns to the mode active before Boost Mode was initiated. Activating Boost Mode prompts the user to confirm the desired temperature and duration.
The Boost Mode is indicated by a specific icon on the screen: a flame symbol (?) when coming from Constant Mode, or a clock symbol (?) when coming from Event Mode.
To stop Boost Mode prematurely, press the 'Stop' button. Figure 11 shows the display with the Boost Icon and Stop button. Figure 12 illustrates the steps to activate Boost Mode via the menu.
7 CHANGING/CONSULTING SETTINGS
7.1 EVENT SETTINGS (programming a weekly schedule)
Event settings allow programming or modifying the weekly schedule for Event Mode. This process involves three steps:
- Step 1: Select Day(s): Choose a specific day or a sequence of days (Mon-Fri, Sat-Sun) to program. Figure 14 shows this selection screen.
- Step 2: Program Periods: Up to six periods can be programmed per day. This involves setting the 'From' and 'To' times for each period (Figure 15) and the target temperature (Figure 16 for Period 1, Figure 17 & 18 for Period 2).
- Step 3: Copy Programming: Decide whether to copy the programmed schedule to the next day. This process can be repeated for other days as needed.
7.2 USER SETTINGS
7.2.1 TIME AND DATE
This setting allows adjustment of the thermostat's clock and calendar.
7.2.2 CHILD LOCK
Activating the Child Lock feature locks the thermostat settings to prevent accidental changes. A lock symbol appears on the home screen (Figure 19). To unlock, press and hold all three buttons for five seconds.
7.2.3 DISPLAY SETTINGS
Users can customize the display content:
- Time and Day: Show or hide the time and day on the home screen (Figure 20).
- Temperature: Choose to display either the desired set temperature or the actual measured temperature.
- Screen saver: Activate or deactivate the screen saver, which displays temperature, time, and day after 60 seconds of inactivity (Figure 21).
7.2.4 ENERGY MONITORING
This feature provides statistics on the NRG-DM's usage. Users need to input currency, the installed heating cable load (in kW), and the cost per unit of energy (kWh). The monitoring menu displays data for the last 2 days, the last month, and the last year.
7.3 ENGINEER SETTINGS
7.3.1 TEMPERATURE CALIBRATION
For Floor Sensor Mode: Calibrate the floor sensor to match the actual floor temperature, accounting for differences due to floor construction.
For Room Sensor Mode: Calibrate the ambient sensor to match the actual room temperature. The NRG-DM performs auto-calibration for the Room Sensor after factory resets or initial installation. Manual calibration is recommended only in specific cases where auto-calibration accuracy is suboptimal.
