RadioMaster R86 Receiver User Manual

Product: R86 Receiver

Brand: RadioMaster

Product Overview

The RadioMaster R86 is a compact 2.4GHz RC receiver designed for reliable performance in various radio control applications. It supports multiple protocols, including D8, D16v1, and SFHSS, offering flexibility for different transmitters. With a control distance of up to 1km+, it is suitable for a wide range of models.

Physical Description

Diagram: The receiver is a rectangular component with dimensions approximately 28mm x 16.5mm x 11mm and weighs 4.8 grams. It features two antennas, each approximately 15cm long. The top surface shows the BIND button, an LED indicator, and the model name "R86" along with "RADIOMASTER V2". It also displays channel labels (CH1 to CH6) and the operating voltage range (DC 4.5-8.4V). The side view shows the pin header connectors for the channels and power, labeled TOP and SIDE. The antenna connectors are located at the rear.

Binding Method

Follow these steps to bind the R86 receiver to your transmitter:

  1. Turn on your transmitter and select the desired protocol (D8, D16v1, or SFHSS).
  2. Enter bind mode on the receiver: Press and hold the [BIND] button on the receiver while powering it on. The receiver's LED will cycle through the supported protocols (D8, D16, S-FHSS).
  3. When the receiver's LED flash pattern matches the selected transmitter protocol, press the BIND button on the transmitter. The receiver's light will flash rapidly and then return to a solid state, indicating successful binding.
  4. After binding, cycle the power to the receiver (turn it off and then on again) to confirm the connection.

*Note: This receiver does not support FrSky transmitters directly; it is compatible with multi-protocol (MPM) radios.

Fail-Safe Protection

Fail-safe settings ensure your model behaves predictably if the radio signal is lost.

  1. Within 10 seconds of powering on the receiver, press the [BIND] button once. This action saves the current channel values from your transmitter as the fail-safe values.
  2. After the initial 10 seconds, the [BIND] button's fail-safe saving function is disabled to prevent accidental changes while preparing your model for flight.

*Note: For D8 and D16 compatible receivers, frequency fine-tuning MUST be performed prior to flight to ensure optimal range and stability.

Frequency Fine Tuning

This procedure is crucial for D8 and D16 protocols to eliminate frequency errors between the transmitter and receiver, maximizing control distance and stability.

Once the radio is bound to the receiver, navigate to the RF Freq. fine tune option in your transmitter's Model Setup menu.

  1. Gradually decrease the RF Freq. fine tune value until the radio connection with the receiver is lost. Record this value (TUNE_MIN).
  2. Gradually increase the value from TUNE_MIN until the connection is restored. Continue increasing the value until the connection is lost again. Record this new value (TUNE_MAX).
  3. Calculate the median value using the formula:
    (TUNE_MIN + TUNE_MAX) / 2 = TUNE_MEDIAN
  4. Set the transmitter's RF Freq. fine tune option to the calculated TUNE_MEDIAN value.

Example: If the connection is lost at -73 (TUNE_MIN) and restored/lost again at +35 (TUNE_MAX), the median is calculated as:
(-73 + 35) / 2 = -38 / 2 = -19. So, set RF Freq. fine tune to -19.

Once the correct fine-tuning value is determined, it can be used for all models utilizing the same protocol.
