Rockler Shutter Design Wizard: Custom Shutter Plan
Product: 3½" Movable Shutter Plan - Front Control Arm
Introduction
Thank you for using Rockler's Shutter Design Wizard. This tool allows you to save plans individually, email them to yourself or your builder, or print them for use in your shop. You can also reset the wizard to configure additional shutter panel sizes for your entire project.
Important Notes
- Consult the Shutter Measuring and Mounting Guide to determine accurate shutter panel dimensions.
- The program assumes 5/4 stock (1/16" finished thickness) for all frame pieces (stiles and rails). The minimum thickness for all Shutter Stile Jigs is 1".
- The program uses preset values for stile and rail widths. Stiles are a standard 2" wide. Top and bottom rails adjust according to panel height.
- Plans default to dowels for frame joinery. If using mortise and tenon joinery, add tenon length to the rails.
- For shutters over 48" in height, a middle rail is recommended. Refer to the Shutter Measuring and Mounting Guide for details.
- When drilling basswood, drill slowly and allow the bit to clear chips. Basswood is a stringy hardwood, and drilling too fast can bind shavings in the bit.
- Movable louvers use one shutter pin on each end to connect the louver to the stiles. Do not glue the plastic pins in the louver or stile.
- Movable pins have a 1/32" shoulder for rotation clearance.
- Six tension pins are included in every package of 50 shutter pins. Add two or more per shutter panel to provide louver resistance.
- Shutter plans do not include additional stile width for the overlap between adjoining shutters. Consult the Shutter Measuring and Mounting Guide for more information on multiple shutter configurations.

- Rail dimensions: Top rail is 3" high, bottom rail is 3" high, with 1 1/2" clearance from the top and bottom of the stile.
- Overall Height: 38" (from top of top rail to bottom of bottom rail)
- Stile Thickness: 1-1/16" (1" MIN.)
- Top Rail: 3-5/16" Full Width. Features a 5/16" rabbet.
- Bottom Rail: 4-5/16" Full Width. Features a 5/16" rabbet.
- Louver placement: Louvers are set within the stiles, with a 3" section of the stile above the top louver and below the bottom louver.
- Stile and Rail connection: Features a bead detail on the stile and a chamfer on the rail.
- Rabbet: 5/16" rabbet on both top and bottom rails.
- Control Arm Dimensions: 38" L x 1/2" W x 5/8" H
- Mouse Hole Dimensions: 1-1/8" L x 5/8" W x 1/2" D
- Louver Profile: 3 1/2" wide, 1" flat.
