Hazards and Warnings

The Artillery Hornet 3D printer has motorized and heated parts. When the printer is in operation, always be aware of possible hazards.

Electric Shock Hazard

Never open the electronics bay of the printer while the printer is powered on. Before removing the access panel, always power down the printer and unplug the AC power cord.

Burn Hazard

Never touch the extruder nozzle, the heater block, or the heated bed without first turning off the hotend and heated bed and allowing it to completely cool down. The hotend and heated bed can take up to twenty minutes to completely cool down. Also, never touch recently extruded filaments. The filament can stick to your skin and cause a burn.

Fire Hazard

Never leave flammable materials or liquids on or near the printer when powered on or in operation. Liquid acetone and vapors are extremely flammable.

Pinch Hazard

When the printer is in operation, be careful never to put your fingers in the moving parts, including the belts, pulleys, gears, wheels, or lead screws.

Static Charge

Make sure to ground yourself before touching the printer, especially the electronics. Electrostatic charges can damage electronic components. To ground yourself, touch a grounded source.

Age Warning

For users under the ages of 18, adult supervision is recommended. Beware of choking hazards around children.

Accessory Checklist

The Artillery Hornet 3D printer includes the following accessories:

  • Two main printer frame components (gantry and base).
  • Extruder assembly with hotend.
  • Tool bag containing: Hex wrenches (various sizes), open-end wrench, small screwdriver, spare parts (e.g., screws, nuts).
  • USB cable.
  • Power cable with plug.
  • SD card with reader.
  • Spool holder components.
  • Zip ties.
  • Small bag labeled 'ARTILLERY'.

Assembly

Step 1: Mount Gantry

Align the XZ gantry to the notch on the base. Secure the gantry to the base using the four pre-installed M5x25 screws.

Step 2: Install Spool Holder

Slide the spool holder into the groove on the base and press it down to secure it in place.

Step 3: Connect Cables

Connect the Z endstop cable, then connect the Z stepper motor cable, and finally, connect the main cable.

Step 4: Install Hotend

Install the hotend onto the carriage using the three M3x6 screws provided in the tool bag.

Step 5: Connect Extruder Cable

Connect the extruder cable and tighten it by turning the locking mechanism.

Step 6: Adjust Eccentric Nuts

Adjust the tension on the eccentric nuts using the supplied spanner as needed.

Leveling the Build Plate

To print good parts, the build plate must be leveled, and the nozzle should be approximately 0.1mm from the build plate in all locations. This is roughly the thickness of a single sheet of A4 paper. Adjust the build plate height so that you can barely slide the paper between the nozzle and the build plate with minimal resistance.

  1. Select Temperature > Preheat PLA > Preheat PLA. This heats the bed and nozzle to actual printing conditions for more accurate leveling. Wait for 1 minute after the machine reaches the target temperature.
  2. Select Motion > Level Corners. This will home the machine and then move the nozzle to the first corner.
  3. Slide a piece of A4 paper between the nozzle and the build plate.
  4. Turn the leveling knob under the bed closest to the nozzle until the paper slides with slight drag.
  5. Choose Next to move to the next point and repeat step 4.
  6. Leveling is complete after all 4 points are leveled.
  7. You may want to repeat steps 5-6 two to three times for better results, as adjusting one corner can affect others.
  8. Fine adjustments to the bed level may be needed at the start of printing. The first layer will indicate if the distance between the nozzle and build plate is correct. It should be slightly pressed into the build surface to maximize contact while allowing good extrusion flow.
    • You can try to carefully adjust the leveling knob during the first layer of the print while the plate is moving until the distance between the nozzle and build plate produces smooth extruded lines.
    • After fine-tuning the bed level during the first layer, you may want to stop the print, clear the build plate, and restart the print.

Preparing Slicing Software

This printer works with most slicing software like Slic3r, Cura, Simplify3D, etc. This guide will detail the setup for Cura software to help you make your first print. We recommend installing the software from the included memory card. For other operating systems, download from the official site.

After installation and starting the software, you should see the following screen. Continue until you reach the 'Add a printer' page.

Screenshot description: The initial screen of Ultimaker Cura is displayed, prompting the user to get started or update.

Screenshot description: The 'Add a printer' dialog is shown, offering options to add a networked or non-networked printer.

Screenshot description: In the 'Add Printer' dialog, the user selects 'Custom' > 'Custom FFF Printer', enters 'Artillery Hornet' as the printer name, and clicks 'Add'.

Screenshot description: The 'Machine Settings' window for the Artillery Hornet is displayed. Key settings include X (Width) 220mm, Y (Depth) 220mm, Z (Height) 250mm. The 'Heated Bed' option must be checked. Users are instructed to copy the content of 'Start G-code.txt' and 'End G-code.txt' from the memory card into the respective fields.

Screenshot description: The 'Machine Settings' window for Extruder 1 shows 'Compatible material diameter' should be changed to 1.75 mm.

Screenshot description: The Ultimaker Cura interface is shown. Instructions direct the user to click on 'Preferences' > 'Configure Cura...' from the toolbar.

Screenshot description: The 'Preferences' window is open to the 'Profiles' tab. Users are instructed to click on 'Profiles' and then the 'Import' button.

Screenshot description: The 'Import Profile' dialog displays the contents of an SD card. Users should navigate to the memory card and import the profile files (e.g., Hornet Fast.curaprofile, Hornet Fine.curaprofile).

Screenshot description: A confirmation message indicates 'Profile successfully imported'.

Screenshot description: The 'Print settings' window is displayed. Users are instructed to click on 'Print settings' to open the floating window.

Screenshot description: The 'Print settings' window shows the 'Profile' dropdown menu. Users should select the imported profile, such as 'Fine - 0.1mm'.

Screenshot description: The Ultimaker Cura interface displays a 3D model on the build plate. Instructions state to drag and drop the STL file or load it via 'File > Open File(s)...' and then click the 'Slice' button.

Screenshot description: The 'Save to File' dialog is shown. Users can choose 'Save to Removable Drive' (if the memory card is detected) or 'Save to file' to save the sliced file to the memory card.

Screenshot description: The 'Save to File' dialog shows the user saving the 'CFFFP_Cube.gcode' file to the SD Card.
