412-497 Perfect Lock T2 Seismic Latch
Installation Manual
Product Purpose and Disclaimer
This product is designed to help prevent damage during natural disasters such as earthquakes. However, it does not guarantee complete safety. Please understand that under certain disaster conditions, the lock may not function as intended. Furthermore, if excessive force is applied, the latch may break.
Thank you for purchasing this Garage product. Before use, please read this instruction manual carefully and keep it for future reference.
Notes on Use
- For wooden cabinet doors only. (Not suitable for glass or metal doors.)
- Mount on solid wood sections where screws can be securely tightened.
- Use in conjunction with self-closing hinges.
- The pull-out strength of the seismic latch is 35kg per unit.
- The locking mechanism is designed to activate with seismic intensity 4-5 or higher. However, performance may vary depending on the ground conditions, building structure, floor level, and the contents of the cabinet. The lock will disengage when the shaking subsides below intensity 4-5. To prevent injury from falling contents, please ensure you are not near the cabinet doors when this occurs.
Caution
- Handle tools with care.
- Ensure children are kept away during installation.
- Follow the installation instructions precisely. Incorrect installation may lead to malfunction.
- Avoid scratching the product or your floors during installation.
Required Parts
First, verify that all necessary parts are included:
- Latch Body: 2 units
- Latch Receiver: 2 units
- Mounting Screws: 8 units (Bind Tapping 3.5*16)
Mounting Location
Mount the units centrally on the underside of the cabinet's top panel.
If locking one door causes both doors to become secured (e.g., with a key lock), install latches on both doors. If there is a key lock, avoid the lock mechanism and mount the latches in the center.
General Placement: Mount the seismic latches centrally. Mounting them near the hinges may result in excessive force or insufficient locking function.
Diagram Description: A top view of a cabinet with two doors shows the underside of the top panel. The placement for the two latch bodies is indicated near the center, aligned with the closing path of each door. A front view of the cabinet doors illustrates that the latch should be mounted centrally, not close to the hinges.
Installation Method (1)
It is recommended to use the seismic latch installation jig (Part No. 412-498).
Position the cabinet body in its final installation location. Ensure the cabinet is level. Complete all door adjustments (up/down, left/right, front/back) before installing the seismic latch. If the cabinet is moved or door adjustments are made after installing the latch, the alignment between the latch body and receiver may change, preventing proper locking.
(Note: The latch operates within a 3-degree angle. The adjuster range is approximately +10mm, allowing for a maximum tilt of about 1.5 degrees, which is generally sufficient for normal installations and prevents accidental operation.)
Peel off the orange seal from the latch body. Place the installation jig on a flat surface and insert the latch body into the jig. Ensure the area with the seal (the locking mechanism) faces the wall of the jig. The latch body will only fit into the jig in this specific orientation.
Diagram Description: The installation jig is shown on a flat surface. The latch body is being inserted into the jig, with the seal side oriented towards the jig's internal wall.
Installation Method (2)
Use the installation jig to determine the mounting position for the latch body. Mark the pilot hole locations with an awl ().
Diagram Description: The jig is used to position the latch body against the cabinet's top panel. An awl is used to mark pilot hole locations on the panel. The diagram shows three variations for positioning the jig based on door/cabinet features:
- 3-1: If the door or cabinet has no shock-absorbing material or insect-proofing gasket, align the front edge of the jig with the front edge of the cabinet's top panel.
- 3-2: If the door has shock-absorbing material, position the jig forward by the thickness of the material.
- 3-3: If the cabinet has an insect-proofing gasket, align the front edge of the jig with the front edge of the gasket.
Detailed Diagram Descriptions:
- Scenario 3-1: Jig aligned with the front edge of the top panel.
- Scenario 3-2: Jig positioned forward by the thickness of the shock-absorbing material on the door.
- Scenario 3-3: Jig aligned with the front edge of the insect-proofing gasket on the cabinet.
In all scenarios, an awl is used to mark the pilot holes on the cabinet's top panel, corresponding to the elongated holes on the latch body.
Remove the jig and latch body. Drill pilot holes at the marked locations using an awl (). Then, secure the latch body using the mounting screws and a Phillips head screwdriver ().
Important: If the lock engages after attaching the latch body, loosen the side screws of the cabinet, gently wiggle the latch body to free the lock mechanism, and then retighten the screws.
Diagram Description: Pilot holes are drilled, and the latch body is attached with screws using a screwdriver.
Insert the jig back into the latch body. Close the door gently to determine the correct position for the latch receiver on the door. The jig's pointed end will create a mark on the door.
Diagram Description: The jig is inserted into the mounted latch body. The door is partially closed, and the pointed tip of the jig makes a mark on the inside of the door where the latch receiver should be placed.
Drill pilot holes at the marked location on the door using an awl (). Attach the latch receiver using the mounting screws and a Phillips head screwdriver ().
Note: Pay attention to the correct top/bottom orientation of the latch receiver.
Diagram Description: Pilot holes are drilled on the door, and the latch receiver is attached with screws using a screwdriver. The diagram also highlights the correct orientation for the latch receiver.
Operation Check: Verify that the door opens and closes smoothly.
Diagram Description: Shows the door in a closed state, then opening and closing, and finally in an open state, illustrating the smooth operation.
Note: A "click" sound when the latch engages with the receiver is normal and indicates proper function.
Important: Perform the operation check with the door that is not being operated open. Incorrect installation could lead to the door becoming unopenable.
Important: If the door is pushed inward by the weight of stored items, the lock may not disengage. The lock engages with seismic intensity 4-5. If the shaking stops at a level below this, the lock will disengage. Stored items may then fall, so please stand clear of the cabinet doors.
