General Information

For driving, the vehicle manufacturer's specifications regarding trailer load and nose weight are decisive. The values specified for the towing hitch must not be exceeded.

D-value Calculation Formula:

D [kN] = (Trailer Load [kg] x Vehicle Gross Weight [kg] / (Trailer Load [kg] + Vehicle Gross Weight [kg])) x 9.81 / 1000

The towing hitch is intended for towing trailers equipped with ball couplings and for use with load carriers approved for attachment to the towing hitch. Any other use is prohibited. Driving must be adapted to road conditions. The vehicle's handling characteristics change when towing a trailer. Consult the vehicle manufacturer's operating manual.

Vehicles equipped with parking assistance systems may experience malfunctions after installing the towing hitch, as certain parts (ball bar, ball coupling) may be within the sensors' detection range. In such cases, the detection area should be adjusted or the parking assistance system deactivated. If using towing hitches with detachable or pivoting ball bars, malfunctions are not expected if the ball bar is removed from its operating position.

The manufacturer-approved standard fixing points have been observed. National guidelines concerning official approval of installations must be followed. These installation and operating instructions must be enclosed with the vehicle papers.

Installation Instructions

The towing hitch is a safety component and must only be installed by qualified personnel. Any alteration or conversion to the towing hitch is prohibited and would lead to cancellation of design certification.

Remove insulating compound and underseal from the vehicle (if present) in the area of the towing hitch's mating surfaces. Seal any bare bodywork and bores with anti-corrosive paint.

  1. Disassemble the rear bumper with its side parts and the bumper reinforcement (if applicable). If disassembling the towing hitch later, the bumper reinforcement must be refitted to the vehicle.
  2. Position the base part 1 onto the vehicle. Slide the brackets at "a" into the longitudinal beams. Loosely screw part 1 at "b" to the rear panel using washers 8.5x21x2 and screws M8x20. Note: Do not pinch the door seal. Slide the straps 6 on the left and right through the openings "e" and loosely screw base part 1 at "a" with washers 10.5x21x2 and screws M10x35.
  3. Place washers 10.5x25x3 over the holes "c" on the left and right in the trunk floor and insert screws M10x105. From underneath, slide spacer tubes 18x3x73 and washers 10.5x34x4 onto the M10x105 screws already inserted at "c". Then, loosely screw supports 3 and 4 at "c" with washers 10.5x25x3 and nuts M10. Loosely screw supports 3 and 4 at "d" with washers 8.5x21x2, screws M8x30, and nuts M8.
  4. Align the towing hitch and tighten all screws and nuts.
  5. Tightening Torques:
    • At "b", "d" for M8: 20 Nm
    • At "a", "c" for M10: 40 Nm
  6. Cut out the bumper in the middle bottom area according to the provided template. The line "YO" corresponds to the center of the vehicle. Mount the bumper onto the vehicle.
  7. Slide the ball bar 2 between the plates at "f" and loosely screw it with screws M12x70, washers 13x24x2.5, and nuts M12. The socket holder 7 is also screwed on here.
  8. Tightening Torque:
    • At "f" for M12: 95 Nm

Subject to alteration.

Operating Instructions

After approximately 1000 km of towing, re-tighten all towing hitch securing bolts with the specified tightening torques.

The towing hitch must be kept clean and greased. However, if stabilization devices such as Westfalia "SSK" are used, the ball coupling must be free from grease. Follow the instructions in the relevant operating manuals.

If at any point the ball coupling diameter reaches 49.0 mm or less, the towing hitch must no longer be used for safety reasons.

After fitting the towing hitch, the vehicle's empty weight increases by 15 kg.
