Risk of Carbon Monoxide
This griddle is a combustion appliance. All combustion appliances produce carbon monoxide (CO) during the combustion process. This product is designed to produce extremely small and non-hazardous amounts of carbon monoxide if used and maintained in accordance with all warnings and instructions. Do not block the incoming or outgoing air flow of the griddle.
Carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning produces symptoms similar to the flu, watery eyes, headaches, dizziness, fatigue, or even death. You cannot see or smell it. It is an invisible killer. If these symptoms occur during the operation of this product, go to fresh air immediately!
Never use the appliance indoors in a house, camper, tent, vehicle, or any other unventilated or enclosed space. This griddle consumes air (oxygen) and produces carbon monoxide (CO). Do not use it in unventilated or enclosed areas as this will endanger your life.
Never store propane near a source of high heat, open flames, pilot lights, direct sunlight, other ignition sources, or in an area where temperatures exceed 120°F (49°C).
This product is powered by propane gas. Propane gas is invisible, odorless, and flammable. An odorant is normally added to help detect leaks and may be described as a "rotten egg" smell. The odorant may fade over time, so gas leaks are not always detectable by smell alone.
Propane is heavier than air and can accumulate in low-lying areas. If you smell gas, turn off the griddle and perform a leak test on the cylinder and connections to stop the leak.
During ignition and operation, this product may be an ignition source. Never use the griddle in areas that contain or may contain volatile or suspended combustibles in the air, or products such as gasoline, solvents, paint thinner, dust particles, or unknown chemicals.
Propane gas is heavier than air and leaking propane gas accumulates at ground level. It can ignite from ignition sources, including matches, lighters, sparks, or open flames of any kind several feet from the source of the leak. Use only a propane gas installation for gas extraction.
Installation
Installation must comply with local codes or, in the absence of local codes, the National Fuel Gas Code, ANSI Z 223.1/NFPA 54, the Natural Gas and Propane Installation Code, CSA B149.1, or the Propane Storage and Handling Code, B149.2.
Safety: Safety information is presented on this page and also in these instructions. Special attention should be paid to information accompanied by the safety alert symbol: DANGER, WARNING, CAUTION.
WARNING:
- Use only outdoors in a well-ventilated area.
- Minimum clearance to adjacent combustible materials is required. Griddles must have a clearance of 24 in (61 cm) on all sides from any dwelling, walls, aluminum siding, windows, fences, and any other combustible material.
- Do not place under an overhang, siding, or other combustible material.
- Do not use the appliance on a boat or recreational vehicle.

CAUTION: This appliance will be hot during and after use.
Propane Gas Connection and Warnings
(LPG) LIQUEFIED PROPANE GAS:
- Propane gas is non-toxic, odorless, and colorless at production. For your safety, an odor (similar to rotten eggs) has been added to propane gas to allow it to be smelled.
- Propane gas is extremely flammable and can ignite unexpectedly when mixed with air.
PROPANE CYLINDER REQUIREMENTS:
- Propane models are designed for use with a standard 1 lb propane cylinder, not included with the griddle. Never connect your griddle to a propane cylinder that exceeds this capacity.
- The propane cylinder must be constructed and marked in accordance with the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) propane cylinder specifications or the National Standard of Canada, CAN/CSA-B339, Cylinders, Spheres and Tubes for the Transportation of Dangerous Goods, CAN/CSA-B339.
- Only cylinders marked "propane" should be used.
NOTE: The regulator may hum or whistle during operation. This will not affect the safety or use of the griddle.
DANGER:
- Never store a spare propane cylinder near the appliance.
- Do not store a propane cylinder in an area where children play.
- Propane cylinders must only be stored outdoors in a cool, dry location.

Leak Testing Procedure
A leak test is used to determine the seal of a joint. Before using your propane gas griddle, perform a leak test on the connection between the regulator and the propane gas cylinder to reduce the risk of serious injury or death from fire or explosion.
A leak test should be performed:
- Before using your griddle for the first time.
- Each time the propane cylinder is changed.
- After travel, especially over rough or bumpy roads.
- After a prolonged period of storage or non-use.
CAUTION: ALWAYS PERFORM THE LEAK TEST OUTDOORS IN A WELL-VENTILATED AREA AWAY FROM ANY IGNITION SOURCE. ENSURE THE GRiddle IS NOT IN USE AND IS COOL TO THE TOUCH. DO NOT SMOKE DURING A LEAK TEST. DO NOT USE AN OPEN FLAME TO CHECK FOR GAS LEAKS.
HOW TO PERFORM A LEAK TEST:
- Mix a solution of one part water and one part dish soap in a spray bottle. The solution should be concentrated to make bubbles when used.
- Spray the solution onto the connection between the regulator and the gas cylinder and look for bubbles to form, which will indicate a gas leak, defect, or damaged connection.
CAUTION: If a leak is found, tighten and inspect the connections. If a leak cannot be stopped, contact Master Chef Customer Service at 1 855 453-2150 for assistance.
Leveling Your Griddle
Leveling your griddle will ensure proper grease flow into the grease channel and into the waiting grease trap.
Now that you have chosen a location for your griddle, you will need to adjust the leveling feet at the bottom of the griddle to encourage grease flow to the proper place.
CAUTION: ONLY ADJUST THE LEVELING FEET WHEN YOUR GRiddle IS IN POSITION AND WHEN THE GRiddle IS COOL TO THE TOUCH.
The leveling feet can be adjusted by turning them up or down to achieve a level surface.
Lighting Instructions
LIGHTING INSTRUCTIONS
- Place your griddle on a firm, level surface and confirm that all control knobs are in the "0" / "OFF" position.
- Select a burner control knob. Push and turn the control knob counterclockwise to the "05" / "MAX" position. You will hear a "click" sound as the piezo igniter in the control knob activates. Confirm that the burner is lit before proceeding.
CAUTION: IN CASE OF IGNITION FAILURE, INSERT A BBQ LIGHTER OR MATCH INTO THE SIDE OF THE BURNER BOX AS SHOWN BELOW.
- Repeat step 2 to light the second burner. Confirm that the burner is lit before performing a burn-in (see page 18).
WARNING: NEVER TILT YOUR HEAD DIRECTLY OVER THE GRiddle WHEN ATTEMPTING TO LIGHT THE MAIN BURNERS, TO PREVENT POTENTIAL INJURIES. MULTIPLE ATTEMPTS TO RELIGHT THE BURNERS MAY RESULT IN GAS ACCUMULATION AND A FLASH FIRE. IF YOU EXPERIENCE DIFFICULTY LIGHTING THE APPLIANCE, CONSULT THE TROUBLESHOOTING SECTION OF THIS MANUAL.
CAUTION: ALWAYS PREHEAT THE GRiddle BEFORE COOKING. TURN ON ALL BURNERS AND TURN THE CONTROL KNOBS TO THE "05" / "MAX" POSITION FOR 10 MINUTES. AFTER PREHEATING, TURN THE CONTROL KNOBS TO THE APPROPRIATE SETTING.
Burn-In Procedure
Before using your griddle for the first time, it is important to complete a burn-in. Start the griddle and let it heat for at least 15 minutes on "05" / "MAX" to perform a burn-in. This will "heat clean" the internal components, dissipate odors, and remove any foreign material.
WARNING: NEVER USE ALCOHOL, LIGHTING FLUID, OR KEROSENE TO LIGHT OR RE-LIGHT A FIRE IN YOUR GRiddle.
Shutdown Procedure
SHUTDOWN PROCEDURE
- Push and turn the control knobs clockwise to the "0" / "OFF" position.
CAUTION: THE GRiddle WILL REMAIN HOT FOR SOME TIME. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO MOVE OR STORE THE GRiddle UNTIL IT IS COMPLETELY COOL.
- Remove the propane cylinder from the pressure regulator and replace the protective cap on the cylinder.
- Disconnect the pressure regulator.
NOTE: It is normal to hear a "poof" sound as the remaining propane burns off.
WARNING: IF FROST FORMS ON THE REGULATOR, IMMEDIATELY TURN OFF THE GRiddle AND CLOSE THE PROPANE CYLINDER VALVE. THIS INDICATES A PROBLEM WITH THE CYLINDER AND IT MUST NOT BE USED WITH THIS PRODUCT. RETURN THE CYLINDER TO THE SUPPLIER!
WARNING: DO NOT TRANSPORT THE GRiddle WITH A PROPANE GAS CYLINDER ATTACHED. THE CYLINDER MAY LOOSEN FROM THE VALVE AND CAUSE A GAS LEAK, WHICH MAY RESULT IN AN EXPLOSION, FIRE, OR SERIOUS PERSONAL INJURY. DISCONNECT THE PROPANE GAS CYLINDER BEFORE MOVING OR STORING THE GRiddle. IF YOU STORE THE GRiddle INDOORS, STORE THE PROPANE GAS CYLINDER OUTDOORS.
WARNING: WHEN TRANSPORTING AND STORING THE CYLINDER, MAKE SURE IT IS IN AN UPRIGHT POSITION AND NOT ON ITS SIDE. DO NOT SMOKE AROUND A CYLINDER, ESPECIALLY WHEN TRANSPORTING IT IN A VEHICLE.
Prevention
Burner Flame Pattern
The burners on your griddle are designed to mix oxygen and propane at a rate that allows for optimal flames. If the burner holes, air shutter, or venturi are blocked, it will affect the propane and air mixture, causing weak or inconsistent flames or flames coming from the air port.
Good flame pattern flames may have some yellow 1 color flickering, then a dark blue 2 color, followed by a bright blue 3 by the burner tube.
Grease Fire
Grease fires or excessive flare-ups can occur on the griddle surface, inside the burner box, or in the grease trap. Do not throw water on a grease fire. Do not attempt to smother the fire. Baking soda, as well as salt, will quickly cut off oxygen to the fire, smothering the flame. It is highly recommended to keep a few boxes of baking soda and/or a fire extinguisher nearby your griddle.
PREVENTION:
- Remove grease buildup from the griddle surface and inside the burner box.
- Clean the grease trap after each use.
- Always reduce cooking temperature to medium after PREHEATING.
FOR YOUR SAFETY:
- DO NOT throw water on a fire.
- Keep baking soda nearby to extinguish a fire.
- Follow all warnings and safety checks described in the USER MANUAL.
- PROTECT your family and home by performing the cleaning and maintenance steps described in this manual.
Flame Rollout
Blockages in the burner venturi caused by spiders, insects, and nests can cause flame rollout. Flame rollout occurs when a blockage in the venturi tubes is caused by spiders, insects, and nests, and blocks the gas flow, forcing it back towards the control panel and control knob. The ignited gas, if undetected, can cause a fire in that area. If you encounter any of the characteristics of flame rollout, turn off the control knobs and disconnect the propane cylinder. Follow the burner cleaning procedure described in the maintenance section of this manual.
CHARACTERISTICS OF FLAME ROLLOUT:
- A fire burning between the burner box and the control panel, usually accompanied by HOT OR MELTED CONTROL KNOBS.
- Burners may burn with LARGE YELLOW FLAMES.
- Burners may not ignite.
PREVENTING FLAME ROLLOUT:
- After ignition, check for normal burner flames.
- If irregular flames are noticed, immediately turn off the appliance and perform burner maintenance to clear blockages.
- If the control knobs feel hot, immediately turn off the appliance and perform burner maintenance to clear blockages.
- Clean the gas jet at the valve to remove any accumulation or blockage.
- It is recommended that the griddle be covered with the included cover to reduce blockages caused by spiders, insects, or nests.
WARNING: AS SOON AS YOU SEE YELLOW, DISORDERLY FLAMES OR POORLY LIT BURNERS, STOP YOUR GRiddle AND REMOVE AND CLEAR OBSTRUCTIONS, SUCH AS SPIDER WEBS, FROM THE BURNERS AND THE GAS VALVE JET.
CAUTION: ALWAYS ALLOW AMPLE TIME FOR THE GRiddle TO COOL COMPLETELY BEFORE HANDLING OR CLEANING ANY OF ITS PARTS.
WARNING: NEVER APPLY COLD WATER TO THE ENTIRE SURFACE OF A HOT GRiddle AT ONCE. THIS WILL CAUSE WARPING. DO NOT USE SOAP ON THE GRiddle COOKING SURFACE. THIS WILL DESTROY THE GRiddle SEASONING.
Seasoning Your Griddle
WHAT IS SEASONING
Seasoning is the process of applying multiple oil coatings to the griddle surface and heating it to a high temperature to bake the oil into the griddle top. Seasoning your griddle improves cooking performance, creates a non-stick cooking surface, prevents damage and deterioration from moisture, and prolongs the life of your griddle.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The 22" (55.9 cm) portable gas griddle is pre-seasoned with soybean oil as a protective coating. This coating may leave some discoloration on the griddle top. This is normal and will not affect the seasoning process.
RECOMMENDED OILS FOR SEASONING:
- Vegetable oil
- Vegetable shortening
- Canola oil
- Flaxseed oil
- Olive oil – not ideal. Burns at a lower temperature than the other options above.
PERFORMANCE AND OPERATION
WARNING: ALWAYS WEAR HEAT-RESISTANT PROTECTIVE GLOVES TO AVOID BURNS.
SEASONING
- Turn on the griddle and set the controls to the "05" / "Max" position.
- Apply oil to the top, sides, and corners of the griddle using long-handled tongs and paper towels to spread the oil and thoroughly coat the entire surface.
3. Heat the oil to its smoke point. You will notice the griddle top changing color.
4. When the oil stops smoking, repeat steps 2 and 4, until there is a noticeable sheen on the surface. Repeat these steps approximately 3 to 5 times, until the griddle surface becomes dark.
With continued use of your griddle, seasoning adhesion improves. Applying a coat of oil at the beginning and end of each cooking session will help maintain the seasoning. Never use soap to clean the griddle, as this will destroy the seasoning. Never pour cold water on a hot griddle, as this may cause warping of the griddle top.
CAUTION: CUSTOMERS IN HUMID OR COASTAL CLIMATES MAY REQUIRE MORE FREQUENT SEASONING AND THE USE OF DENSER COOKING OILS TO PREVENT RUST AND CORROSION.
WARPING
Minor variations in manufacturing and raw materials may cause some griddles to warp slightly during preheating, when water is applied to the surface, or when cold food is placed directly on the cooking surface. Warping will correct itself after the first 5 to 10 uses.
Maintenance
WARNING: ALWAYS WEAR HEAT-RESISTANT PROTECTIVE GLOVES TO AVOID BURNS.
OIL CLEANUP
- At the end of each cooking session and before storing your griddle, let it cool to a temperature below 300°F (150°C). Scrape off any food debris using a spatula or a straight metal scraper.
- Wipe the griddle surface with a paper towel.
3. For stubborn grease, you can use a tablespoon of water and your scraper to loosen debris and scrape into the grease trap.
4. Apply a thin coat of cooking oil to maintain seasoning and protect the griddle top.
STORING YOUR GRiddle
- If possible, always store it in a cool, dry place.
- Remove the propane cylinder when storing your griddle. Appliances should only be stored indoors if the gas supply is turned off, disconnected, and removed from the appliance and stored outdoors.
- If storing the griddle for extended periods, ensure the griddle top is fully seasoned and protected.
- Cover the griddle only when the appliance has completely cooled.
- Always cover your griddle with an all-season cover to protect it from all weather elements. It is recommended to tent the cover to allow water to run off the cover instead of sitting on top of the griddle.
GRiddle SURFACE RUST
Rust spots on the griddle surface are an indication that the protective seasoning has worn off and needs to be reapplied. Start by removing the griddle top from the burner box and moisten the surface with water. Using protective gloves and steel wool, scrub the affected areas until the rust is worn off the surface. Rinse the surface thoroughly. Do not let the griddle sit in water. Dry completely. Follow the complete seasoning steps on page 21.
GREASE TRAP
Remove and clean the grease trap AFTER EACH USE to prevent spills, grease fires, and hot grease splatter.
When the griddle top and grease trap are COMPLETELY COOL, remove the grease trap and dispose of the contents in a disposable container, then in the trash. Alternatively, you can place the disposable container in the refrigerator to allow the oil to solidify before discarding it in the trash.
BURNERS AND BURNER BOX MAINTENANCE
Although the burner box of your griddle is fully protected from grease and other accumulations that may build up during cooking, regular checks of the burners and ignition electrode are still necessary to ensure the proper performance, safety, and longevity of your griddle.
BURNER MAINTENANCE
Because the burners are covered by the griddle top, it is not as easy to identify poor performance and premature wear of parts.
For this reason, we recommend that once per season, the griddle top be removed and burner maintenance be performed:
- Remove the griddle top. Place it right side up.
- Remove the fasteners to release the burners. Use WD40 lubricant and a screwdriver/pliers to facilitate this removal.
- Remove the burners.
4. Use a flexible venturi brush to clean the inside of the burners. Be sure to reach far enough inside the burner to remove any spider webs and nests that may be present.
5. Use a wire or paper clip to clean blocked burner ports.
6. Brush off any rust or corrosion from the surface of the burners and wipe with a damp cloth. Dry the burners.
7. Reinstall the burners. Ensure the burners are properly seated on the gas jet of the valve before reassembling the hardware.
NOTE: Before reinstalling the burners, use a cotton swab to clean the gas jet of the valve.
GENERAL SAFETY TIPS FOR GRIDDLES
- ALWAYS turn the control knobs and the gas supply valve to the "OFF" position when the griddle is not in use.
- Never leave the griddle unattended at any time during use.
- If the griddle surface and components have not been regularly maintained or if a safety check has not been performed, exercise extreme caution during the first ignition, preheating, and cooking at high temperatures.
- Never move the griddle during operation or while it is still hot.
- All surfaces of the griddle and the surrounding area can become HOT to the touch. Keep children and pets away. Do not allow people to gather around the griddle. Always use long-handled barbecue utensils and insulated gloves to avoid burns and protect yourself from grease splatter.
- The grease trap must be in place before cooking.
- Always empty the grease trap after each cooking session. Do not remove the grease trap until it has completely cooled.
- Clean the griddle often, preferably after each cooking session.
- If you notice grease running off the griddle, wait for it to cool and adjust the level of your griddle top to ensure the grease flows correctly into the grease trap.
- Perform a leak test each time you change your propane cylinder.
- Inspect the griddle's hose and regulator for cracks, tears, or rodent damage. If in doubt, perform a leak test to ensure your safety and the safety of others.
- If frost forms on the regulator, immediately turn off the griddle and close the propane cylinder valve. This indicates a problem with the cylinder and it must not be used with this product. Return it to the supplier!
- Never place flammable or temperature-sensitive items near the griddle surface, as they may overheat and cause an explosion, fire, serious injury, or death.
- Do not use water on a fire. If a fire develops and it is safe to do so, close the propane cylinder valve and disconnect it. Wait for the fire to extinguish before turning the control knobs to the "OFF" position.
WARNING: DO NOT attempt to repair or modify the hose, valve, or regulator for any suspected defect or for any type of modification or conversion. Any modification to this assembly will void your warranty and create a risk of gas leak and fire. Use only manufacturer-authorized replacement parts for your model.
