R8285E Control Center
Application
The R8285E Control Center is designed for low-voltage control of line-voltage fan motors and auxiliary circuits within heating, cooling, or air-conditioning systems. It serves as a replacement for the R8222F relay.
Specifications:
- Switching: Double Pole Single Throw (DPST); 1 Normally Open (N.O.) / 1 Normally Closed (N.C.)
- Input Voltage: 120 Vac
- Contact Load Ratings: 12 AFL, 60 ALR at 120 Vac
- Relay Coil Ratings: Inrush: 20 VA maximum; Sealed: 9 VA; Wattage: 5 watts; Pickup voltage: Must pick up below 18 volts.
- Transformer Ratings: Power rating: 40 VA; Primary voltage: 120 Vac; Open circuit secondary voltage: 27.0 Vac; Overload protection: Inherent; Frequency: 60 Hz.
The R8285E features DPST switching suitable for two-speed fan motor and limit controller applications.
Installation
Important Considerations:
- Read these instructions carefully. Failure to follow them could result in product damage or a hazardous condition.
- Verify that the product ratings match your application requirements.
- Ensure installation is performed by a trained and experienced service technician.
- After installation, use these instructions to verify proper product operation.
CAUTION: Disconnect the power supply before beginning installation to prevent electrical shock and equipment damage.
Mounting:
The R8285E mounts onto a standard four-inch square junction box. Wiring connections should be made within the junction box. Secure the R8285E to the junction box by passing the junction box screws through the notches in the R8285E mounting plate.
NOTE: The R8285E must be installed within an enclosure. Avoid mounting the R8285E with the mounting plate horizontal and the relay positioned above the mounting plate.
Wiring:
All wiring must adhere to local codes and ordinances.
CAUTION: Disconnect power before making wiring connections to prevent electrical shock or equipment damage.
- Connect the primary wiring to the line voltage power supply.
- Connect the secondary wiring to the 24 Vac control circuit.
- Refer to Figure 1 for a typical wiring diagram.
IMPORTANT: Use only Underwriters Laboratories Inc. listed connectors for external circuit connections to the line voltage lead wires of this device.
Figure 1: R8285E Typical Hookup Diagram
This diagram illustrates a typical hookup for the R8285E in a two-speed fan and limit controller application. It shows connections between the power supply (A), thermostat, R8285E unit, fan motor, fan and limit controller, and the contactor or compressor control panel. An optional hookup with an isolating relay is shown with a dashed line, which is recommended if the heating control has a separate power supply. Alternatively, special thermostat subbases with isolated circuits (e.g., T87F-QS59A1147, T834A, T822A) can provide power supply isolation. Consult specification sheets for further details.
Checkout
Perform a thorough checkout after completing the installation. Operate the system through at least one full cycle to confirm that both the system equipment and the R8285E are functioning as intended.
Service
CAUTION: Disconnect the power supply before servicing to prevent electrical shock and equipment damage.
The R8285E relay is field replaceable. To replace the relay:
- Remove the plug-in relay from its receptacle.
- Replace it with the R8222F relay. Refer to Figure 2.
Figure 2: Mounting Relay to R8285E Relay Receptacle
This figure shows the process of mounting the R8222 relay to the R8285E relay receptacle. It depicts a receptacle with multiple connection points and the R8222 relay with corresponding terminals, along with a retaining bail for securing the relay.
