ResMed VPAP ST-A & H5i Welcome Guide

This guide provides essential information for setting up and using your ResMed VPAP ST-A non-invasive ventilator and H5i heated humidifier.

Introduction

Thank you for choosing the VPAP ST-A or H5i. Before operating the device, please read the entire Welcome and Information Guides.

VPAP ST-A System Components:

  • VPAP ST-A device
  • Air tubing
  • 90W power supply unit
  • S9 Travel bag
  • SD card
  • S9 SD card protective folder

Optional Components:

  • H5i heated humidifier
  • Standard air tubing
  • SlimLine air tubing
  • 3 m air tubing
  • ClimateLine heated air tubing
  • ClimateLineMAX heated air tubing
  • 30W power supply unit (does not support H5i)
  • Power Station II battery pack
  • DC/DC Converter 24V/90W

Traveling Tips for VPAP ST-A:

  • When traveling with the VPAP ST-A only, ensure you pack the SlimLine or Standard air tubing, as the ClimateLine or ClimateLineMAX heated air tubing is not designed for direct connection to the device.
  • Ensure you purchase and travel with the approved power cord for the region where you will be using the device.

H5i Heated Humidifier Overview

The H5i system comprises:

  • H5i heated humidifier
  • H5i standard water tub
  • ClimateLine heated air tubing (if sold as a Climate Control Kit)

Optional H5i Components:

  • ClimateLineMAX heated air tubing
  • H5i cleanable water tub

Traveling Tips for H5i:

  • Ensure that the water tub is empty.
  • Disconnect the H5i from the device by using the release button [➡️].

Setting Up Your System

Follow these steps to connect your H5i and VPAP ST-A:

  1. Align your H5i with the VPAP ST-A and push them together until they click into place.
  2. Connect the DC plug of the power supply unit to the rear of the device.
  3. Connect the power cord to the power supply unit.
  4. Plug the other end of the power cord into the power outlet.
  5. Connect one end of the air tubing firmly onto the air outlet [➡️].
  6. Connect the assembled mask system to the free end of the air tubing.

Important Notes:

  • Always ensure that the VPAP ST-A and H5i are placed on a stable, level surface for proper operation.
  • Always ensure that the VPAP ST-A is placed in an area where the alarm LED indicators are clearly visible.
  • Place the power supply unit away from the H5i to allow for adequate ventilation.
  • For more information on assembling your mask, see your mask user guide.
  • Recommended masks are available on www.resmed.com on the Products page under Service & Support.

Filling the Water Tub

  1. Slide the latch and lift open the flip lid.
  2. Remove the water tub.
  3. Fill the water tub (through the center hole) with distilled or deionized water up to the maximum water level mark (12.5 fl oz / 380 mL).
  4. Return the water tub to the H5i.
  5. Close the flip lid ensuring that it clicks into place.

VPAP ST-A Device Controls

Understanding the device interface:

  • Start/Stop button [▶️]: Starts or stops treatment.
  • LCD screen: Displays menus, treatment screens, and reminders.
  • Push dial [?]: Turn to scroll through menus and change settings. Push to enter a menu or confirm a choice.
  • Alarm mute button [?]: Press once to mute alarms; press again to unmute.
  • Alarm and therapy LEDs: Yellow [?] flashes during an alarm. Blue [?] is on during therapy (if enabled by clinician).

*The Info and Setup menus may be disabled if S9 Essentials has been enabled by your clinician.

Adjusting Humidity Level

Adjust the humidity level (ranging from OFF to 6) for your comfort:

  1. From the HOME [?] screen, turn the dial [?] until the HUMIDITY LEVEL screen is displayed in blue.
  2. Press the dial [?]. The selection will be highlighted in orange.
  3. Turn the dial [?] until the desired humidity level is displayed.
  4. Press the dial [?] to confirm your choice.

Warming the H5i

The warm-up feature pre-heats the water before starting treatment.

To start warming:

  1. Navigate to the humidity level icon [?].
  2. Push and hold the dial [?] for three seconds. The "Warming Up" status bar will appear.

You can stop warm-up by pressing the dial [?] for at least three seconds. You can start treatment at any time by pressing the Start/Stop button [▶️].

Note: The device may continue to blow air for up to an hour after treatment stops to help cool the heater plate. You can unplug the device at any time to allow the heater plate to cool without airflow.

Adjusting Ramp Time

Ramp time allows pressure to increase gradually from a low start pressure to the treatment pressure for a more comfortable start.

To adjust your ramp time:

  1. From the HOME [?] screen, turn the dial [?] until the RAMP screen is displayed in blue.
  2. Press the dial [?]. The selection will be highlighted in orange.
  3. Turn the dial [?] until the desired ramp time is displayed.
  4. Press the dial [?] to confirm your choice.

Using Mask Fit

Mask Fit helps ensure a proper mask seal. It delivers CPAP pressure for three minutes before treatment starts, allowing you to check and adjust for leaks.

  1. Fit your mask as described in your mask user guide.
  2. From your HOME [?] screen, push and hold the dial [?] for three seconds.

One of the following MASK FIT screens will be displayed:

  • Adjust [?]: Indicates leaks are present.
  • Good [?]: Indicates a good seal.

If necessary, adjust your mask, cushion, and headgear until Mask Fit shows "Good" [?]. After three minutes, pressure reverts to the set level, and treatment begins. You can end Mask Fit at any time by pressing the Start/Stop button [▶️].

S9 Essentials Functionality

S9 Essentials simplifies device interaction and menu navigation. If enabled by a clinician, it disables Info and Setup functions, allowing direct control of therapy start/stop, ramp, humidification, and Climate Control.

Selecting the Mask Type

To select your mask type:

  1. Press the Setup menu button [⚙️]. The SETTINGS screen is displayed.
  2. Turn the dial [?] until "Mask" is highlighted in blue.
  3. Press the dial [?]. The selection is highlighted in orange.
  4. Turn the dial [?] to select your mask type (e.g., Tube, Standard, Pillows, Full Face).
  5. Press the dial [?] to confirm your choice.
  6. Push the dial [?] to return to the HOME [?] screen.

Note: Mask type selection may be unavailable if S9 Essentials is enabled by your clinician.

Getting Started with Therapy

  1. Ensure the power is connected.
  2. Adjust ramp time or humidification level if needed.
  3. Fit your mask according to your mask user guide.
  4. To start therapy, breathe into the mask or press the Start/Stop button [▶️].
  5. Lie down and arrange the air tubing so it moves freely as you turn in your sleep.
  6. To stop treatment at any time, remove your mask or press the Start/Stop button [▶️].

Notes on Therapy:

  • If your clinician enabled SmartStart, the device starts automatically when you breathe into the mask and stops when you remove it.
  • If power is interrupted during treatment, the device will automatically restart therapy when power is restored.

Viewing Treatment Screens

The displayed screens vary based on system configuration. Examples in ST mode after therapy starts:

  • HUMIDITY LEVEL [?]: Shows current humidity setting (e.g., 3.0).
  • CLIMATE CTRL [?️]: Shows temperature and humidity control status (e.g., 80°F).
  • TREATMENT 1/3: Displays therapy data like Leak, MV, Vt, PS.
  • TREATMENT 2/3: Shows breath indicators like I:E ratio, % Spont, Trig, Cycle (Timed, Ti Max, Ti Min).
  • TREATMENT 3/3: Can display alarms like "High Leak" [❗] or "Low SpO2" [❗].
  • Oximetry data: Displays SpO2 and Pulse if an oximeter adapter is used.

Pressure Bar: In bilevel modes, vertical lines indicate expiratory and inspiratory pressures. Values are orange during ramping or variable pressure, and white when a set pressure is reached. In CPAP mode, only set pressure is shown.

Toggle between treatment screens by pressing the Info menu button [ℹ️] from your HOME [?] screen.

Viewing the Info Menu

The Info menu provides sleep quality, sleep report, and service information.

To access the Info menu, push the Info menu button [ℹ️] from your HOME [?] screen.

  • Sleep Quality: View usage hours, Mask Fit data [?], and AHI (if enabled by clinician).
  • Sleep Report: View period-specific data (period can be changed).
  • Service: View total device run hours (including humidifier warm-up/cool-down) and software identifications.

To return to the HOME [?] screen, push the dial [?].

Viewing and Muting Alarms

The VPAP ST-A monitors therapy and device conditions. Alarms activate with an audible sound, flashing yellow LED [?], and screen message.

  • Alarm Activated: A message is displayed. If multiple alarms occur, the latest is shown.
  • Alarm Cleared: Press the dial [?] to clear a message and return to the previous screen. The alarm will re-occur if the condition persists. (Note: Power Fail and Alarm Fail alarms are cleared by pressing the dial [?]).
  • Multiple Alarms: View the list by going to the Treatment screen and pressing the Info menu button [ℹ️] until Treatment screen 3 is displayed.

Muting the Alarm:

Press the Alarm mute button [?] once to mute alarms for two minutes. The alarm will sound again if the condition persists. Pressing the button a second time unmutes the alarm. The alarm LED [?] remains lit as long as the condition remains.

Cleaning and Maintenance

Regular cleaning and maintenance are essential for optimal performance.

Disassembling the H5i Water Tub

  1. Slide the latch.
  2. Lift open the flip lid.
  3. Remove the water tub.
  4. Discard any excess water from the water tub.
  5. Unclip all four side latches.
  6. Pull apart the tub lid and base.

Daily Cleaning

  1. Wash the disassembled tub lid and base in warm water using a mild detergent.
  2. Rinse thoroughly in clean water and allow them to dry away from direct sunlight.

Notes on Tubing:

  • Do not hang the air tubing in direct sunlight, as it may harden over time and eventually crack.
  • Do not wash the air tubing in a washing machine or dishwasher.

Weekly Cleaning

  1. Remove the air tubing from the device and the mask.
  2. Wash the air tubing in warm water using mild detergent.
  3. Rinse thoroughly, hang, and allow to dry.
  4. Before next use, reconnect the air tubing to the air outlet and mask.

Monthly Maintenance

  1. Wipe the exterior of the device and H5i with a damp cloth and mild detergent.
  2. Check the air filter for holes or blockages by dirt or dust. Replace the air filter if necessary.
  3. Peel the flip lid seal from the flip lid and wash it in warm water using a mild detergent.

Maintenance Checklist & Air Filter Replacement

General Maintenance:

  • Inspect the H5i water tub and flip lid seal for wear and deterioration.
  • Replace the water tub if any component is leaking or has become cracked, cloudy, or pitted.
  • Replace the flip lid seal if cracked or torn.
  • Clean white powder deposits in the water tub using a solution of one part household vinegar to 10 parts water.

Reassembling and Filling the H5i Water Tub

  1. Place the tub lid back onto the base.
  2. Clip all four side latches.
  3. Fill the water tub with distilled or deionized water up to the maximum water level mark.
  4. Return the water tub to the H5i.
  5. Close the flip lid ensuring that it clicks into place.

Replacing the Air Filter

Replace the air filter every six months, or more often if necessary.

  1. Remove the air filter cover from the back of the device.
  2. Remove and discard the old air filter.
  3. Insert a new ResMed air filter, ensuring that it sits flat in the air filter cover.
  4. Replace the air filter cover.

Air Filter Notes:

  • Ensure the air filter and air filter cover are fitted at all times.
  • Do not wash the air filter; the air filter is not washable or reusable.

SD Card Usage and Data Management

The SD card is supplied to gather therapy data from your device and provide settings updates from your clinician. When instructed, disconnect the device from the power outlet, remove your SD card, insert it in the protective folder, and send it to your clinician.

Removing the SD Card

  1. Push in the SD card to release it.
  2. Remove the card.
  3. Insert the card into the protective folder.
  4. Send the protective folder back to your clinician as instructed.
