TurretCam user manual

Updated June 17, 2025

Product Overview

TurretCam is an IP camera with a smart infrared (IR) backlight and an object recognition function. Users can view archived and live videos in Ajax apps. To store captured data, install a microSD card or connect the camera to an NVR with an installed hard disk. The camera connects to the network via Ethernet.

The camera is available in several versions:

Camera versions with other enclosures are also available. All Ajax cameras are available here.

Functional elements

The camera features the following functional elements:

Operating principle

TurretCam is an IP camera that uses artificial intelligence (AI) for object recognition. Its algorithms can identify moving objects, distinguishing between humans, animals, or vehicles.

The device features a smart IR backlight, ensuring the capture of high-quality images even in low-light conditions. The camera automatically adjusts the backlight intensity in real time to prevent overexposure, enabling clear visibility of objects that are either far away or too close to the camera in low-light conditions.

TurretCam has an IP65 protection class, making it suitable for outdoor installation. Its robust metal enclosure protects the device against sabotage.

A microSD card with a memory capacity from 32 GB to 256 GB (not included) can be installed. The memory card should be Class 30 or faster. The device can also operate without a memory card or via NVR.

Using the video storage calculator, you can calculate the NVR or camera required storage capacity and estimated recording time based on the video stream settings.

Key Features

TurretCam enables users to:

  1. Watch video in real time with zoom capability.
  2. Access archived videos by chronology and calendar (requires microSD card or NVR connection).
  3. Configure motion detection zones and sensitivity.
  4. View the Video wall, combining images from all connected cameras.
  5. Quickly access automation devices from the camera's video player menu.
  6. Create video scenarios that send a short video to the Ajax app when a security detector is triggered.
  7. Download video recordings to smartphones or PCs (requires microSD card or NVR connection).
  8. Configure connection via ONVIF to integrate with video management systems (VMS) such as Milestone, Genetec, Axxon, and Digifort. ONVIF authorization is supported with firmware version 2.356 or later.

The video recording segments downloaded from TurretCam with firmware 2.309 and later have an Ajax digital signature for integrity verification. Use the Ajax media player software to verify authenticity.

Video scenarios

The Ajax system uses IP cameras for alarm verification. Video scenarios substantiate alarm triggers with corresponding video from cameras at the facility. Cameras can be configured to respond to alarms from single or multiple devices, allowing for responses to various alarm types.

Users can also configure sirens to activate upon motion detection or a specific AI-recognized object detection.

Video wall

The Video wall tab provides quick access to all connected cameras, displayed according to privacy settings.

In mobile Ajax apps:

  1. Switch between cameras.
  2. Search for cameras by name.
  3. Manage PTZ cameras.

In Ajax PRO Desktop:

  1. Switch between cameras.
  2. Search for cameras by name.
  3. Organize cameras by room, NVR, or group.
  4. Manage PTZ cameras.
  5. Save customized layouts.
  6. Change the order of displayed video.
  7. Create templates for slide shows.

Learn how to use the video wall widget in Ajax PRO Desktop.

Privacy zones

The system allows hiding parts of the frame. For instance, activity around a safe can be recorded without revealing its contents by setting up a privacy zone. No motion or object will be detected or recorded in this zone.

To set up privacy zones in Ajax apps:

  1. Go to the Devices tab.
  2. Select the camera. If connected to an NVR, select NVR and tap Cameras.
  3. Go to Settings (gear icon ⚙️) twice.
  4. Select the Privacy zones menu.
  5. Go to Configure privacy zones, and select the required area.
  6. Tap the X icon to return to camera settings.

Users can create up to four private zones.

Selecting the installation site

When choosing an installation location, consider the camera's viewing angle and potential obstructions. Placement recommendations for security system design and installation by professionals are available. A list of recommended partners is also available.

The camera should not be installed:

  1. In locations where temperature and humidity levels do not align with specified operating parameters.
  2. In locations where objects or structures might obstruct the camera's view.

Installation

  1. Connect the Ethernet cable. If powered by PoE, no external power supply is needed. Otherwise, connect both the external power supply and the Ethernet cable.
  2. Turn on the power supply. The LED indicator on the cable connector lights up green.
  3. Add the camera to the system, then disconnect the Ethernet and power supply.
  4. Using the bundled hexagon key (Ø 2 mm), loosen the two screws and detach the camera enclosure from the holder. Support the enclosure to prevent it from falling.
  5. Remove the screws holding the QR code cover. Insert a microSD card (not included) into the slot. Replace the QR code cover and tighten the screws.

After adding the device, format the memory card in the camera settings.

  1. Use the installation template to mark drill hole locations. Secure the template with tape and drill three holes as indicated.
  2. Route the cable through the camera holder and secure the holder to the surface using the bundled screws.
  3. Place the camera enclosure in the holder, ensuring the lens faces the protected area. Secure it by tightening the two screws with the hexagon key (Ø 2 mm).
  4. Connect the Ethernet and power supply. Install a waterproof connector if the camera will be used in indoor areas with humidity levels outside operating parameters, or outdoors.
  5. Turn on the power supply. The LED indicator on the cable connector lights up green.

Adding to the system

Before adding a device:

  1. Install an Ajax app.
  2. Log in to your account or create a new one.
  3. Select or create a space.
  4. Add at least one virtual room.
  5. Ensure the space is disarmed.

Only a PRO or a space admin with configuration rights can add the device to the space.

How to add TurretCam:

Resetting to the default settings

To reset the camera:

  1. Turn off the camera by disconnecting the external power supply or Ethernet cable (if powered by PoE).
  2. Press and hold the reset button.
  3. Power the camera while holding the reset button. Wait until the button's LED indicator lights up violet (approx. 50 seconds). The LED indicator lights up blue for 20 seconds after powering with the reset button pressed, then turns off for 30 seconds, and finally lights up violet, indicating the camera has been restored to default settings.
  4. Release the button.
