Setup
Connecting to Your TV
Option 1: HDMI ARC
If your TV has an HDMI input jack labeled "ARC": Connect the included HDMI cable to the HDMI jacks labeled with "ARC" on both the TV and the sound bar.
Option 2: Optical
Connect the included Optical cable between the TV's optical output and the sound bar's optical input.
Option 3: HDMI (Non-ARC)
Connect the included HDMI cable to any available HDMI jack on the TV and to one of the "HDMI In" connectors on the sound bar. Note: For this connection, you may need to manually turn off your TV speakers via your TV's settings menu if you hear sound from both devices.
Placing the Sound Bar and Subwoofer
Sound Bar Placement: For the best listening experience, position the sound bar centered under your TV. For wall mounting instructions, refer to the advanced setup section.
Subwoofer Placement: For best performance, place the subwoofer on the same wall as the TV, no more than 30ft (10m) from the sound bar.
Connecting to AC Power
Sound Bar: Connect the sound bar power cord to the sound bar and then to an AC outlet. During startup, a blinking orange light ? will appear on the front.
Subwoofer: Connect the subwoofer power cord to the subwoofer and then to an AC outlet. A solid green light ? on the back of the subwoofer indicates it is paired to the sound bar.
Placing and Connecting the Surrounds
Place the surround speakers on the left and right sides, equidistant from the main listening position. Ensure the speaker marked "L" is on the left and the speaker marked "R" is on the right. If wall mounting, refer to the included wall mounting template.
Connect the surround speakers to their respective AC power outlets. A flashing green light ? will be visible on the back of the surrounds, indicating they are ready to pair.
Installing Remote Batteries
Insert the provided (2) AAA batteries into the remote control.
Verification and Control
Verifying Your Connections
Turn on your TV and verify you are seeing video and hearing sound from the sound bar. If no sound is heard and no lights are visible on the front of the sound bar, press the power button ? on the sound bar to turn it on.
Note: If you hear sound from both your TV and sound bar, you must manually turn off your TV speakers using the Settings Menu on your TV. Refer to your TV's owner's manual for instructions.
Using Your TV Remote to Control Volume
The MagniFi MAX is pre-configured to respond to volume and mute commands from popular TV remotes (Samsung, LG, Sony, Vizio, and others). If the MagniFi MAX remote does not work with your TV, follow the instructions on page 75 (IR Learning Function) to teach the sound bar your TV remote commands.
Listening to Music and Audio
Listening to Music via Chromecast Built-in
Chromecast Built-in allows you to:
- Stream music from your favorite apps over Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
- Create a whole-home audio experience with multi-room sync.
- Use Google Assistant on a Google Home speaker to control music playback using voice commands.
Setup:
- Download the free Google Home app and follow in-app instructions to connect the Polk MagniFi MAX to your Wi-Fi or Ethernet network.
- For more detailed setup information, visit google.com/chromecast/builtin and google.com/home/support.
- When streaming from a Chromecast-enabled app, a white light ? will appear on the sound bar.
Listening to Music via Bluetooth
- To connect your device using Bluetooth, press the Bluetooth button ? on the sound bar or remote. A blue light ? will slowly pulse on the sound bar as it waits to connect.
- Go to the Bluetooth settings on your phone, tablet, or computer and select "Polk MagniFi MAX". The light ? will turn solid blue when your Bluetooth device is connected.
Receiving Automatic Updates
Polk may provide periodic software updates via the internet to improve product performance and expand the list of supported TV remote controls. Connecting your sound bar to your home network (via Wi-Fi or Ethernet using the Google Home app) is highly recommended to receive automatic updates.

Visual Indicators
The front of the sound bar has a row of lights indicating status. The back of the subwoofer and surround speakers also have indicator lights.
Sound Bar Front/Back Indicators:
- Wi-Fi: OFF (Not Connected) ❌, SOLID (Connected) ✔️
- HDMI 1, HDMI 2, HDMI 3: Indicate selected HDMI input.
- HDMI (ARC): Indicates ARC connection.
- Optical: Indicates Optical input selected.
- AUX: Indicates AUX input selected.
- Dolby Content: Indicates Dolby audio decoding.
- DTS Content: Indicates DTS audio decoding.
- Night Mode: Indicates Night Mode is active.
- Bluetooth: Indicates Bluetooth connection status.
- Sub: Indicates subwoofer connection status.
- Surrounds: Indicates surround speaker connection status.
Sound Bar Top Panel Lights (Source/Mode):

Optimizing Your Listening Experience
Use the remote control or sound bar top panel buttons to adjust settings. The sound bar lights ? will indicate the current level.
Bass Control: Adjust low-frequency volume for more or less impact. Lights indicate level from less bass (-) to more bass (+).
Volume Control: Adjust master volume. Lights indicate level from quieter (-) to louder (+).
VoiceAdjust Control: Adjust dialogue levels for clarity. Lights indicate level from less voice enhancement to more voice enhancement.
Optimizing Your Surround Speakers
Surround Volume Control: Adjust volume for the rear surround speakers. Lights indicate level from less volume (-) to more volume (+).
Balance Control: Adjust the sound balance for left and right surround speakers. Lights indicate balance from left-weighted (L) to right-weighted (R).
Using Your TV or Cable/Satellite Remote to Control the MagniFi MAX
The MagniFi MAX can often be controlled by your existing TV remote using one of these methods:
- HDMI CEC Control: If your TV is connected via HDMI and CEC is enabled in your TV settings, volume and mute functions may work automatically.
- Preloaded IR Codes: If connected via Optical or non-CEC HDMI, the sound bar may recognize commands from popular TV brands without further setup. Visit the Polk website for a list of supported brands.
- IR Learning Function: If your TV is not recognized, you can teach the sound bar to learn your TV remote's commands (volume, mute, source, bass) using the IR Learning Function.
Using the IR Learning Function
IMPORTANT: Hold both remotes about 12" (30cm) directly in front of the MagniFi MAX. Ensure remotes have fresh batteries.
Entering IR Learn Mode:
- Ensure the sound bar is powered on ?.
- Press and hold the Source button ? on the sound bar for about 3 seconds.
- Release the button when you hear a two-note tone. White lights ? on the front of the sound bar will bounce left and right.
STEP 1: Select a button on your MagniFi MAX remote
Press and release the button on the MagniFi MAX remote you want to learn (e.g., Volume Up ?). You will hear a single tone and see all white lights ? fading in and out together.
STEP 2: Select a button on your TV remote
Briefly tap the corresponding button on your TV remote. You will hear a two-note tone, and white lights ? will count down from left to right as the IR command is processed.
STEP 3: Verify the results
- If you see white lights ? fading in and out again, repeat Step 2.
- If you hear a two-note tone and see lights indicating failure (e.g., ❌❌❌❌❌❌❌❌), the command was not learned. Please try again.
- If you hear a single tone and see lights indicating success (e.g., ✔️✔️✔️✔️✔️✔️✔️✔️), the command was successfully learned.
STEP 4: Learn Another Code
When the white lights ? are bouncing left and right again, you are ready to learn another function by repeating Steps 1-3.
Exiting IR Learn Mode:
Press and hold the Source button ? on the sound bar again for about 3 seconds. Release the button when you hear a two-note tone. The soundbar will automatically exit IR learn mode if no IR commands are received for 60 seconds. All learned commands are saved automatically.
Clearing All Learned IR Codes:
Press and hold the Source button ? on the sound bar for about 10 seconds. You will hear a two-note tone. Continue holding the button and release it after you hear a three-note tone.
Advanced Setup
Connecting Other HDMI Sources
The MagniFi MAX supports up to three HDMI sources. It will pass-through 4K and HDR signals to your TV if using the HDMI-ARC connection between the sound bar and TV. High-speed HDMI cables are required for 4K content.
Using the Optical Input for an Audio Source
If you want to use the Optical input for another audio source (e.g., a CD player):
- Connect your TV to the MagniFi MAX using HDMI-ARC.
- Connect the supplied Optical cable between the CD player and the sound bar's Optical input.
- Press the TV button on the remote to toggle between the HDMI-ARC input (indicated by 4 white lights ?) and the Optical input (indicated by 5 white lights ?), provided audio is available.
Wall Mounting
Wall mounting templates are provided for both the sound bar and the SR1 wireless surround speakers. Refer to the instructions printed on the templates for proper installation. Screws and fasteners are not included; choose hardware appropriate for your wall construction. Consult a professional if unsure.
French Note: Templates include French instructions (e.g., "GABARIT D'INSTALLATION").
If Your TV Doesn't Have HDMI or Optical Outputs
If your TV lacks an HDMI ARC or Optical output, connect the sound bar using the included 3.5mm analog AUX cable:
- Connect the AUX cable between your TV's audio output and the sound bar's AUX input.
- Select AUX on the sound bar remote control.
- Turn up the volume and ensure you hear sound.
- Turn off your TV's speakers using your TV's Settings menu under "audio" or "speakers".
Note: Dolby 5.1 and DTS audio decoding are not supported when using the AUX input.
Troubleshooting
I Don't Hear Sound from My Subwoofer
- Verify the subwoofer is plugged into a power source ?.
- Check the green light ? on the back of the subwoofer:
- If it is solid green ✔️, turn up the Bass using the remote control.
- If it is flashing green ?, you need to sync the subwoofer to the soundbar.
Syncing the Subwoofer and Surround Speakers to the Soundbar
Note: You must sync BOTH surround speakers AND the subwoofer.
Syncing the Subwoofer:
- Ensure the soundbar is powered on ?.
- On the back of the SOUNDBAR, press and hold the SYNC button ? until you hear a tone (about 3-4 seconds), then release. The SUB and SURR lights ? above the SYNC button will flash green.
- On the back of the SUBWOOFER, press and hold the SYNC button ? until you hear a tone (about 10 seconds) and the light ? on the back turns solid green ✔️.
Syncing the Surround Speakers:
- Ensure the soundbar is powered on ?.
- Sync the subwoofer using the instructions above.
- On the back of EACH surround speaker, press and hold the SYNC button ? until the light ? on the bottom of the speaker turns solid green ✔️ (about 10 seconds).
- When BOTH LEFT and RIGHT surround speakers are paired, you will hear a tone from the sound bar.
Note: If you hear a two-note descending tone from the sound bar, syncing failed. Please try again.
Sound Modes
- Music Mode: Provides balanced sound and smoother bass while minimizing spatialization effects for natural sound reproduction. Use the Music button ? to toggle between Music Mode and All Stereo mode for 2-channel audio.
- All Stereo Mode: Provides room-filling sound by mirroring front channels to surround speakers.
- Movie Mode: Optimized for movie and TV content, offering bass boost, increased spatialization, and enhanced VoiceAdjust for dialogue clarity. This is the default mode for HDMI and Optical inputs.
- Night Mode: Reduces bass and volume dynamics while improving voice intelligibility for low-volume listening.
- Sport Mode: Enhances dialogue-rich content like sports, news, and talk shows. Uses VoiceAdjust to boost dialogue clarity and optimizes subwoofer volume.

Warranty Information
Polk Audio, LLC warrants Polk Audio branded wireless speakers to the original retail purchaser against defects in materials and workmanship for a period of one (1) year under normal use and conditions. Polk will, at its option, repair or replace the product if it proves to be defective. If the product model is no longer available and cannot be repaired or replaced with an identical model, Polk may replace it with a current model of equal or greater value.
To obtain warranty service, visit www.polkaudio.com or contact Polk Audio Customer Service at 1-800-377-7655 for instructions. You will need to provide an original receipt or bill of sale. Ship the product, prepaid and insured, with proof of purchase to Polk Audio, 1 Viper Way, Vista, CA 92081. Risk of loss or damage in transit is borne by the purchaser. Freight collect shipments will be refused.
This warranty is non-transferable and does not apply to products that have been modified, used contrary to their purpose, have altered or missing serial numbers, or were purchased from unauthorized dealers. It is void if damaged by accident, unreasonable use, neglect, improper service, or other causes not arising from defects in material or construction. Products with thermally damaged voice coils due to abuse are not covered but may be replaced at Polk's discretion. The warranty terminates if you sell or transfer the product.
This limited warranty does not cover cosmetic damage, paint damage, damage to other components, parts, or premises, or any consequential damages. Polk does not warrant uninterrupted or error-free operation. External conditions beyond Polk's control may affect performance, including wireless network configuration, performance, distance, content sources, third-party devices, and radio/environmental interference.
Polk may offer access to third-party content; Polk reserves the right to alter or discontinue access to such content at any time. Polk disclaims all warranties and representations offered by third-party content providers. Polk is not obligated to provide updates or upgrades, but if provided, they are subject to these terms.
This warranty gives you specific legal rights, and you may have other rights that vary by state. All other warranties, including implied warranties of merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose, are expressly excluded and disclaimed to the maximum extent allowed by law. Polk assumes no liability for acts of third parties. Some states do not allow exclusion of implied warranties, so the above limitation may not apply.
