About the GB40

The NOCO Genius® Boost™ GB40 is an ultra-compact, portable lithium-ion jump starter designed for 12-volt lead-acid batteries in automobiles, boats, motorcycles, ATVs, lawn mowers, RVs, tractors, trucks, and more. It features spark-proof technology and reverse polarity protection, making it extremely safe for anyone to use. The GB40 can instantly jump start most single-charge applications up to 20 times on a single charge. It also includes a USB charger and an LED flashlight, making it an ultimate emergency kit.

Getting Started

The GB40 comes partially charged from the factory and must be fully charged before use. Carefully read and understand your vehicle's owner's manual for specific instructions and recommended methods for jump starting your vehicle. Before using the product, consult your battery's user manual to determine its voltage and chemistry. The GB40 is designed to jump start only 12-volt lead-acid batteries.

Connecting to the Battery

Before connecting, confirm that your battery is a 12-volt lead-acid type. The GB40 is not suitable for other battery types. Identify the correct battery terminal polarities. The positive battery terminal is typically marked with POS, P, or +. The negative battery terminal is usually marked with NEG, N, or -. Do not make any connections to the carburetor, fuel lines, or thin sheet metal parts. The following instructions are for negative ground systems (most common). If your vehicle has a positive ground system (very rare), follow these instructions in reverse order.

  1. Connect the HD battery's positive (red) clamp to the battery's positive (POS, P, +) terminal.
  2. Connect the HD battery's negative (black) clamp to the battery's negative (NEG, N, -) terminal or the vehicle chassis.
  3. When disconnecting, reverse the order: first remove the negative (or positive for positive ground systems), then the positive.

Jump Starting

  1. Verify the battery's voltage and chemistry.
  2. Ensure the HD battery clamps are connected to the correct battery terminals.
  3. Connect the HD X-Connectors to the GB40.
  4. Before attempting to jump start, ensure all vehicle power loads (headlights, radio, climate control, etc.) are turned off.
  5. Press the Power button to initiate the jump start. All LED lights will flash to indicate proper operation. If connected correctly, the White Boost LED will illuminate. If the battery clamps are connected in reverse, the Red Error LED will illuminate. To correct this error, reverse the connections, and the White Boost LED will then illuminate. The White Boost LED indicates the GB40 is ready to jump start your vehicle.
  6. Attempt to start the vehicle. Most vehicles will start immediately. Some vehicles may require the GB40 to be connected for up to 30 seconds before starting. If the vehicle does not start immediately, wait 20-30 seconds and try again. Do not attempt to jump start more than 5 (five) times consecutively within 15 (fifteen) minutes. Allow the GB40 to rest for 15 (fifteen) minutes before attempting to jump start the vehicle again.

Low Voltage Batteries and Manual Override

The GB40 is designed to jump start 12-volt lead-acid batteries down to 2 volts. If your battery is below 2 volts, the Boost LED will not illuminate, indicating that the GB40 cannot detect a battery. For jump starting batteries below 2 volts, the GB40 features a Manual Override function that allows you to force the jump start function to an 'on' position.

⚠ CAUTION: USE THIS MODE WITH EXTREME CARE.

THIS MODE IS FOR 12-VOLT LEAD-ACID BATTERIES ONLY. SPARK-PROOF AND REVERSE POLARITY PROTECTION FEATURES ARE DISABLED IN THIS MODE. BEFORE USING THIS MODE, CAREFULLY CHECK THE BATTERY TERMINAL POLARITIES. DO NOT ALLOW THE POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE BATTERY CLAMPS TO TOUCH OR CONNECT, AS THE PRODUCT WILL SPARK. THIS MODE USES VERY HIGH CURRENT (UP TO 400 AMPS), WHICH CAN CAUSE SPARKS OR HIGH HEAT IF NOT USED PROPERLY. IF YOU ARE UNSURE HOW TO USE THIS MODE, SEEK PROFESSIONAL ASSISTANCE.

Before using the Manual Override feature, ensure the HD battery clamps are connected to the correct battery terminals and the HD X-Connectors are connected to the GB40. To activate Manual Override, press and hold the Manual Override button (red exclamation mark symbol within a red circle) for 3 (three) seconds. The White Boost LED will flash, indicating successful entry into Manual Override and that your vehicle is ready to jump start. If connected with reverse polarity, the Red Error LED will illuminate, and the product will not operate.

⚠ CAUTION: TURN OFF THE GB40 BEFORE DISCONNECTING THE BATTERY CLAMPS.

THIS WILL ENSURE YOUR SAFETY. REMEMBER THAT SPARK-PROOF AND REVERSE POLARITY PROTECTION FEATURES ARE DISABLED IN THIS MODE.

Understanding Charge LEDs

The GB40 has 4 (four) Charge LEDs – 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%. These Charge LEDs indicate the internal battery's State-of-Charge (SOC). See below:

LED IndicatorDescription
25% Red LED (●○○○)When the internal battery is less than 25% charged, the red 25% Charge LED will be solid.
50% Red LED (●●○○)When the internal battery is less than 50% charged, the red 50% Charge LED will be solid.
75% Yellow LED (●●●○)When the internal battery is less than 75% charged, the yellow 75% Charge LED will be solid.
100% Green LED (●●●●)Once the internal battery is fully charged, the green 100% Charge LED will be solid. No other LEDs will be illuminated.

User Interface

The GB40 features a user-friendly interface with several indicators and buttons:

  1. Internal Battery Status Indicator (1): Shows the internal battery's charge status using four LEDs (25%, 50%, 75%, 100%).
  2. Error LED (2): Illuminates red if reverse polarity connection is detected or flashes if the internal battery temperature is too high.
  3. Power On/Off Button (3): Press to turn the device on and off.
  4. Power LED (4): Illuminates when the device is on.
  5. Boost LED (5): Illuminates white when the Boost feature is active. When the product is correctly connected to a battery, the GB40 automatically detects the battery and enters Boost mode (the LED flashes white when Manual Override is active).
  6. Manual Override Button (6): Press and hold for 3 (three) seconds to activate. WARNING: This bypasses safety protection and manually forces Boost into an 'on' state. Use when the battery charge is too low to be detected.
  7. Brightness Mode Button (7): Operates the ultra-bright LED light in 7 brightness modes: 100% > 50% > 10% > SOS > Blink > Strobe > Off.

Charging the GB40

Connect the GB40 to a USB INPUT port using the included USB Charging Cable. It can be charged from any USB port, such as an AC adapter, car charger, laptop, etc. The USB INPUT port is rated at 2.1 Amps to ensure safe and efficient charging of the internal lithium battery.
