[Warning Symbol] The exclamation point within an equilateral triangle is intended to alert the user to the presence of important operating and maintenance (servicing) instructions in the manual accompanying the unit.

Unpacking

Thank you for purchasing your new Kenwood Microwave. These operating instructions will help you use it properly and safely. We recommend that you spend time reading this instruction manual to fully understand all the operational features it offers. Read all safety instructions carefully before use and keep this manual for future reference.

Remove all items from the packaging. Retain the packaging. Dispose of it according to local regulations.

The following items are included:

If items are missing or damaged, please contact Partmaster (UK only) at Tel: 0344 800 3456 for assistance.

Getting Ready

This microwave is designed for home use only and should not be used for commercial catering.

  1. After unpacking, check the microwave for damage. Ensure there are no dents and the door closes properly. A damaged microwave could allow microwave energy to escape. Remove all packaging from the inside. Dispose of plastic wrappings/bags safely and keep out of reach of babies and young children.
  2. Choose a flat, stable work surface away from heat sources (radiators, fires) and cold areas. The surface should be at least 85cm above the floor. Allow 20 cm space around the microwave and 30 cm above for ventilation. This microwave is not designed to be built-in. Do not block intake or outlet openings.
  3. Plug the microwave into a standard household electrical socket (230-240V~, 13 amp rated). Avoid sockets with adapters or other equipment plugged in. Do not use a multi-adapter.
  4. Place the turntable support inside the microwave and the glass turntable plate on top. The support sits securely on the spindle. Always use the turntable plate and support when using the microwave.
  5. To protect your work surface, fix some non-slip cushion buttons (not included) to the underside of the microwave.

[Note Symbol] Remove the turntable plate and support before turning the microwave upside down.

[Note Symbol] Do not remove the unit's feet.

Introducing Microwave Cooking

Always remember basic safeguards used with any cooking equipment or handling hot food. This section provides basic guidelines for microwave cooking. For more information, refer to the back of this manual.

Cooking with a Microwave

Microwave cooking is faster than conventional cooking. Ensure food is fully cooked but avoid overcooking, as excessive cooking times can cause fire.

Checking Your Cooking Utensils

Most heat-resistant, non-metallic utensils are safe if marked "microwave safe".

[Warning Symbol] If unsure or no "microwave safe" marking, do NOT use the utensil.

Refer to the "Materials That Can Be Used" section for utensil types.

Using Aluminium Foil in Your Microwave

Use aluminium foil safely by following these guidelines:

Materials That Can Be Used in the Microwave

Utensils Remarks
Aluminium foil Shielding only. Use small pieces to cover thin parts of meat/poultry to prevent overcooking. Arcing can occur if foil is too close to oven walls (keep at least 1 inch/2.5cm away).
Browning dish Follow manufacturer's instructions. Bottom must be at least 3/16 inch (5mm) above the turntable.
Dinnerware Microwave-safe only. Follow instructions. Do not use cracked or chipped dishes.
Glass jars Always remove lid. Use only to heat food until just warm. Most glass jars are not heat-resistant and may break.
Glassware Heat-resistant oven glassware only. Ensure no metallic trim. Do not use cracked or chipped dishes.
Oven cooking bags Follow instructions. Do not close with metal tie. Make slits for steam escape.
Paper plates and cups For short-term cooking/warming only. Do not leave oven unattended.
Paper towels Use to cover food for reheating and absorbing fat. Use with supervision for short-term cooking.
Greaseproof paper Use as a cover to prevent splattering or a wrap for steaming.
Plastic Microwave-safe only. Look for "Microwave Safe" label. Some plastic containers soften when hot. "Boiling bags" and tightly closed plastic bags should be slit, pierced, or vented as directed.
Plastic wrap Microwave-safe only. Use to cover food to retain moisture. Do not allow wrap to touch food.
Thermometers Microwave-safe only (meat and candy thermometers).
Wax paper Use as a cover to prevent splattering and retain moisture.

Microwave Heating Categories

This microwave has been tested to meet UK government voluntary agreements for reheating pre-cooked food. Heating characteristics are usually calculated for a 1000g load, but many packs are around 350g. A system of heating categories (A-E) helps choose reheating times for pre-cooked food.

The label on the oven door shows the heating category and output power (e.g., 900W). Category E is for your microwave. Check food packaging for category E cooking times.

Higher output power and category mean less heating time required.

Diagram showing relationship between oven output power and heating time.

Diagram showing relationship between oven output category and heating time.

Start cooking at the lowest recommended time and add more if necessary. Ensure food is cooked thoroughly to the centre.

Steam

Steam is created as water in food heats up and evaporates. Steam is safe and escapes through vents and around the door to prevent pressure build-up.

Condensation

Condensation may gather inside the microwave and on the work surface as steam cools. Dry the microwave after cooking foods with high moisture content. Steam escapes safely without microwave energy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions Answers
Why doesn't the food seem to cook? Check that: the cooking time has been set, the door is closed, and the mains socket is not overloaded.
Why does the food seem undercooked or overcooked? Check that the correct cooking time and power setting have been used.
How can I stop eggs from popping? Pierce the yolk with a toothpick before cooking. Never cook eggs in their shells.
Why is standing time important after cooking? Foods build up heat that continues cooking after removal. Standing time allows for even cooking and heat distribution.
Why does my microwave take longer to cook than the recipe suggests? Cooking times are suggestions. Food weight, size, shape, and starting temperature affect cooking time. Use judgement and check food.
Why do I get condensation on the inside of the door? Condensation is normal, especially with high-moisture foods like potatoes.
Does microwave energy get through the window? Can steam escaping from vents/door let energy out? No. The door has a special metal screen that lets you see inside but stops microwave energy. The door and vents are designed to let steam out but keep microwave energy in.
What happens if the microwave is switched on empty? The microwave will be damaged. Do not switch it on when empty. Keep a cup of water inside as a precaution.
Why doesn't the microwave's light illuminate? The bulb may be blown. Call a qualified technician; do not change it yourself.
Sparks inside the microwave? Will it cause damage? Yes, if metal utensils or containers with metal trim are used. Do not use metal (except aluminium foil).
Light showing through vents/door means energy can escape? No. It is normal for the light to be visible.
Why do I get interference on my TV and radio? Microwaves use radio waves. Move the microwave further from the TV or radio to lessen interference.
