Conventions and Safety Precautions
Conventions
The following conventions are used in this guide:
- NOTE! Provides additional information related to the current topic.
- CAUTION! Alerts to precautionary measures to avoid possible hardware or software problems.
- WARNING! Alerts to potential damage that might result from specific actions or inactions.
Server Warnings and Cautions
Electrical Safety
- WARNING! To reduce the risk of electric shock or equipment damage: Do not disable the power cord grounding plug. Plug the power cord into a grounded electrical outlet that is easily accessible. Unplug all power cords from the power supplies to disconnect power. Shock Hazard! Disconnect all power supply cords before servicing. Do not route the power cord where it can be walked on or pinched.
Hot Surfaces
- WARNING! To reduce the risk of personal injury from hot surfaces, allow drives and internal system components to cool before touching them.
Moving Parts
- WARNING! This server is equipped with high-speed fans. Keep away from hazardous moving fan blades during servicing.
Restricted Access
- WARNING! This equipment is intended for use in Restricted Access Locations, accessible only by skilled and authorized personnel.
Operational Cautions
- CAUTION! Do not operate the server for long periods with the access panel open or removed, as this can lead to improper airflow, inadequate cooling, and thermal damage.
- CAUTION! Danger of explosion if the battery is incorrectly replaced. Replace only with the same or equivalent type recommended by the manufacturer. Dispose of used batteries according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) Precautions
CAUTION! ESD can damage drives, boards, and other parts. It is recommended to perform all procedures at an ESD workstation. If one is not available, use an anti-static wrist strap attached to chassis ground (any unpainted metal surface) when handling parts.
Handle boards carefully by their edges, avoiding contact with components and pins. After removing a board from its protective wrapper or the system, place it component-side up on a grounded, static-free surface. Use a conductive foam pad if available, but not the board wrapper. Do not slide boards over any surface.
Before servicing, remove the system from the rack and ensure it is removed before opening the chassis or adding/removing non-hot-plug components. Hazardous electrical conditions may be present on power, telephone, and communication cables; turn off the system and disconnect cables before servicing.
When installing or removing jumpers, use fine needle-nosed pliers on the narrow sides of the jumper to avoid damaging internal contacts or bending/breaking pins.
