Operation

Know Your Brushwacker

Read this instruction manual and safety rules before operating. Compare illustrations with your unit to familiarize yourself with controls and adjustments. Save this manual for future reference.

Illustration of the brushwacker with parts labeled: Trimmer Head, Shield, Line Limiter Blade, Tube, Handlebar, Starter Handle, Primer Bulb, Blade, Throttle Trigger, Choke Lever, Muffler, ON/STOP Switch.

ON/STOP Switch

Used to stop the engine. Push and release the engine ON/STOP switch.

Primer Bulb

Removes air from the carburetor and fuel lines, filling them with fuel for easier starting with fewer pulls on the starter rope. Activate by pressing and releasing.

Choke

Helps supply fuel to the engine for cold starting. Move the choke lever to the FULL CHOKE position. After the engine attempts to start, move to HALF CHOKE. Once the engine has started, move to OFF CHOKE.

Before Starting Engine

WARNING: Read fuel information in safety rules before fueling. Call 1-800-235-5878 if unsure.

Fueling Engine

WARNING: Remove fuel cap slowly when refueling.

This engine is certified for unleaded gasoline. Mix gasoline with a good quality synthetic 2-cycle air-cooled engine oil (Craftsman recommended) at a 40:1 ratio (3.2 ounces of oil per 1 gallon of unleaded gasoline). The included 3.2 oz container of oil is for 1 gallon of gasoline. DO NOT USE automotive or boat oil, as they will damage the engine.

Follow container instructions for mixing fuel. Shake the mixture well. Always read and follow fuel safety rules before fueling.

IMPORTANT: Alcohol-blended fuels (gasohol) can attract moisture, leading to separation and acid formation, which can damage the fuel system during storage.

How to Stop Your Unit

How to Start Your Unit

WARNING: The trimmer head will turn while starting the engine. Avoid contact with the muffler, as a hot muffler can cause serious burns.

Starting a Cold Engine (or a warm engine after running out of fuel):

  1. Set unit on a flat surface.
  2. Slowly press the primer bulb 6 times.
  3. Move the choke lever to FULL CHOKE (align with decal).
  4. Squeeze and hold the throttle trigger.
  5. Pull the starter rope sharply (max 6 pulls) until the engine sounds like it's trying to start.
  6. As soon as the engine sounds like it's trying to start, move the choke lever to HALF CHOKE (align with decal).
  7. Pull the starter rope sharply (max 6 pulls) until the engine runs. If it doesn't start after 6 pulls (at HALF CHOKE), move choke to FULL CHOKE, press primer bulb 6 times, squeeze trigger, pull rope 2 more times. Move choke to HALF CHOKE, pull rope until engine runs (max 6 pulls). Repeat start procedure 2 more times if needed. If still no start, it may be flooded.
  8. Once the engine starts, run for 10 seconds, then move the choke lever to OFF CHOKE (align with decal). Run for 30 more seconds at OFF CHOKE before releasing the throttle trigger. If the engine dies with the choke lever in the OFF CHOKE position, move the choke lever to HALF CHOKE and pull the rope until the engine runs (max 6 pulls).

Starting a Warm Engine:

  1. Move the choke lever to HALF CHOKE.
  2. Squeeze and hold the throttle trigger until the engine runs smoothly.
  3. Pull the starter rope sharply (max 5 pulls) until the engine runs.
  4. Run for 15 seconds, then move the choke lever to OFF CHOKE. If the engine has not started, pull the starter rope 5 more pulls. If it still does not run, it is probably flooded.

Starting a Flooded Engine:

Move the choke lever to OFF CHOKE, then pull the rope to clear excess fuel. This may require many pulls. If the unit still doesn't start, refer to the TROUBLESHOOTING TABLE or call 1-800-235-5878.

Operating Position

ALWAYS WEAR: Eye Protection, Long Pants, Boots.

Cut only from your left to your right.

When operating the unit:

Operating Instructions for Use with Trimmer Head

WARNING: Always wear eye protection. Never lean over the trimmer head. Rocks or debris can ricochet or be thrown into eyes and face, causing blindness or other serious injury.

Before trimming, bring the engine to a speed sufficient to cut the material. Do not run the engine at a higher speed than necessary. The cutting line will cut efficiently when the engine is run at less than full throttle. Lower speeds result in less engine noise and vibration. The cutting line will last longer and be less likely to "weld" onto the spool.

Always release the throttle trigger and allow the engine to return to idle speed when not cutting.

WARNING: Use minimum speed and do not crowd the line when cutting around hard objects (rock, gravel, fence posts, etc.) to avoid damage, entanglement, or thrown objects causing a serious hazard.

The tip of the line does the cutting. Best performance and minimum line wear are achieved by not crowding the line into the cutting area.

Illustration comparing correct cutting with the tip of the line versus incorrect cutting by crowding the line.

Cutting Techniques

The line can easily remove grass and weeds from around walls, fences, trees, and flower beds, but it can also cut the tender bark of trees or shrubs and scar fences.

Trimming

Hold the bottom of the trimmer head about 3 inches (8 cm) above the ground and at an angle. Allow only the tip of the line to make contact. Do not force trimmer line into the work area.

Illustration showing the trimming technique.

Scalping

The scalping technique removes unwanted vegetation down to the ground. Hold the bottom of the trimmer head about 3 inches (8 cm) above the ground and at an angle. Allow the tip of the line to strike the ground around trees, posts, monuments, etc. This technique increases line wear.

Illustration showing the scalping technique.

Mowing

Your trimmer is ideal for mowing in places conventional lawn mowers cannot reach. In the mowing position, keep the line parallel to the ground. Avoid pressing the head into the ground, as this can scalp the ground and damage the tool.

Illustration showing the mowing technique.

Sweeping

The fanning action of the rotating line can be used to blow away loose debris from an area. Keep the line parallel to and above the area surface and swing the tool from side to side.

Illustration showing the sweeping technique.

Operating Instructions for Use with Weed Blades

Blade Thrust: This is a reaction that only occurs when using a bladed unit. It can cause serious injury, such as amputation. It is important to understand what causes blade thrust, how to reduce the chance of its occurrence, and how to remain in control if blade thrust occurs.

What Causes Blade Thrust: Blade thrust can occur when the spinning blade contacts an object that it does not cut. This contact causes the blade to stop momentarily and then suddenly move or "thrust" away from the object. This reaction can be violent enough to propel the operator in any direction and cause loss of control. An uncontrolled unit can cause serious injury if the blade contacts the operator or others.

When Blade Thrust Occurs: Blade thrust can occur without warning if the blade snags, stalls, or binds. This is more likely in areas where it is difficult to see the material being cut. Proper use of the unit reduces the occurrence of blade thrust and the likelihood of losing control.

Bring the engine to cutting speed before entering the material. If the blade does not turn when you squeeze the throttle trigger, ensure the tube is fully inserted into the engine. Always release the throttle trigger and allow the engine to return to idle speed when not cutting. The blade should not turn while the engine is running at idle. If the blade turns at idle, do not use the unit. Refer to the CARBURETOR ADJUSTMENT section or contact your Sears Service Center.

Maintain good firm footing while using the unit by planting feet firmly in a comfortable apart position.

Cut while swinging the upper part of your body from left to right.

As you move forward to the next area to cut, maintain your balance and footing.

Recommended Cutting Position: Cut using the 2 o'clock to 4 o'clock position of the blade.

Carburetor Adjustment

WARNING: Keep others away when making idle speed adjustments. The trimmer head or blade will be spinning during most of this procedure. Wear protective equipment and observe all safety precautions. After adjustments, the trimmer head or blade must not move/spin at idle speed.

The carburetor has been carefully set at the factory. Adjustments may be necessary if:

Make adjustments with the unit supported so the cutting attachment is off the ground and not contacting any object. Hold the unit by hand while running and making adjustments. Keep all body parts away from the cutting attachment and muffler.

Idle Speed Adjustment

Allow the engine to idle. Adjust speed until the engine runs without the trimmer head or blade moving or spinning (idle too fast) or stalling (idle speed too slow).

WARNING: Recheck the idle speed after each adjustment. The trimmer head or blade must not move or spin at idle speed to avoid serious injury to the operator or others.
