KEF XIO Soundbar: High-End Audio with Uni-Q Technology

By Julian Holländer

Introduction

The KEF XIO soundbar represents a significant entry from the renowned English loudspeaker specialists into the soundbar market. While KEF is primarily known for its expertise in classic stereo systems, the XIO demonstrates their ability to successfully translate their audio engineering prowess into new product categories, as previously seen with their Mu7 headphones.

Priced at €2,300, the XIO positions itself firmly in the high-end segment. While comparable compact streaming speakers might fall into a more mid-range price bracket, the XIO aims to deliver an exceptional audio experience that justifies its premium cost.

Design and Technology

The KEF XIO boasts a symmetrical design, directing sound in multiple directions. It features independently amplified chassis placed at the front, rear, top, and sides. A key technological highlight is the integration of KEF's signature Uni-Q driver technology, utilizing miniaturized Uni-Q MX versions for mid-range and treble. These drivers, combining mid-range and high-frequency components in a single unit, are designed to deliver precise and clear sound. The soundbar incorporates three upward-firing drivers for spatial audio, two full-range drivers, and four woofers, totaling twelve drivers, each powered by a dedicated Class-D amplifier.

The woofers utilize special rectangular "Racetrack"-shaped models and incorporate KEF's P-Flex technology to enhance diaphragm precision and stability. Additionally, they employ a force-cancelling concept with drivers positioned "back to back" to minimize vibrations, and Velocity Control Technology for precise bass reproduction.

Connectivity options include HDMI eARC and optical input. The soundbar's width of 120 cm makes it suitable for larger televisions and media consoles.

Features and Connectivity

The XIO is powered by KEF's W2 Wireless Platform, enabling versatile music streaming via Spotify Connect, Tidal, Qobuz Connect, Amazon, Internet Radio, Google Cast, AirPlay, and Bluetooth. Control is managed through the KEF app, which offers sound customization options and presets. The app also features the "Intelligent Placement Technology" (IPT) to optimize the soundbar's performance based on its environment.

The soundbar supports advanced audio formats including Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, and Sony 360 Reality Audio, providing an immersive 3D audio experience. Various sound modes are available, such as "Night," "Voice," "Movie," and "Music," alongside "Neutral" and "Direct" modes. The "Direct" mode offers a more unadulterated sound, while other modes utilize virtualizers for enhanced spatiality.

Audio Performance

In terms of audio performance, the KEF XIO delivers a powerful and refined sound. Without an external subwoofer, it provides substantial bass and depth, offering a significant upgrade over standard TV speakers. The "Movie" mode excels in delivering atmospheric sound, impactful explosions, and clear dialogue, even amidst complex soundtracks.

For music playback, the XIO offers a natural, dynamic, and engaging sound profile with excellent timing. It can play at high volumes without distortion, providing a compelling listening experience that encourages audience engagement.

Subwoofer Upgrade

For those seeking even deeper bass, the XIO can be augmented with an optional KEF subwoofer, such as the Kube 10 MIE (€800). Connection can be made via cable or wirelessly using the KEF KW2 wireless adapter (€169). The subwoofer seamlessly integrates with the soundbar, adding significant low-frequency impact and fullness to the audio experience.

Expert Insights

Dr. Jack Oclee-Brown, KEF's Vice President of Technology - R&D, explains the rationale behind the XIO's development: "In the usual case, our products are stereo systems. This is very familiar to audiophiles, but there is a whole generation of people who have not grown up with it. Even among audiophile customers, there are cases where a traditional system is not suitable, for example, due to space constraints. The XIO is intended to offer these customers unadulterated KEF sound." He highlights the challenge of the soundbar form factor, which limits internal volume and requires careful design to avoid obstructing the TV. KEF's differentiator lies in its performance, leveraging their background in high-performance loudspeakers and technologies like VECO (a sensor that measures diaphragm movement for precise signal control) to achieve superior audio quality.

Test Verdict

The KEF XIO is a high-end soundbar that excels in both film and music playback. Its advanced technology, robust build quality, and impressive audio performance justify its premium price point. The soundbar offers a comprehensive feature set, versatile connectivity, and the option for subwoofer expansion, making it a compelling choice for discerning audio enthusiasts.
