Protect Your Land and Animals from Foxes with Gallagher Electric Fencing

Discover effective solutions for deterring foxes and protecting your property and livestock.

Understanding the Fox

The fox is a controversial animal, often perceived as cunning. As a member of the canid family, it is a predator primarily active at dusk and night. Foxes are omnivores, feeding on rabbits, poultry, small rodents, fruits, and berries. They inhabit diverse environments, seeking sufficient shelter, from embankments and dunes to forests and urban fringes.

Foxes are intelligent and adaptable, with territories ranging from 50 to 900 hectares, depending on food availability and deterrent measures. Gallagher electric fences have been successfully used for decades to protect poultry and other small animals. More recently, projects have successfully protected ground-nesting birds from foxes using Gallagher electric fencing.

Gallagher's Advice for Fox Protection

Many opt for traditional wire mesh or wooden fences, believing them effective against foxes. However, these are often insufficient. Foxes are agile and can climb and dig. An electric fence is the most effective solution. A single contact with an electric fence will deter a fox, creating a psychological barrier that protects your animals.

An electric fence offers several advantages:

Foxes are intelligent and persistent. For optimal protection, a double fencing system is recommended: an electrified outer fence and an inner fence. If a fox breaches the outer fence, it will be stopped by the inner fence.

Temporary Fencing Solutions

For limited-term protection of your land or animals, mobile fencing is ideal. It is easy to assemble and dismantle independently, offering the same effectiveness as a permanent solution.

Inner Fence: SmartFence

The SmartFence is a complete, unique Gallagher system with posts, insulators, and wire. It is 100 meters long and suitable for uneven terrain. The SmartFence can be set up and taken down in just 5 minutes.

Key Features of SmartFence:

Outer Fence: Traditional Netting

For temporary protection, an alternative to SmartFence is a 230V electric fence. Poultry netting is recommended for fox deterrence due to its small mesh size, preventing foxes from passing through. Using netting with double stakes provides optimal robustness.

Outer Fence Setup:

Foxlights Solar: Deter foxes by installing Foxlights near the fence. These lights emit random light flashes, simulating human presence and discouraging foxes from exploring the area.

Semi-Permanent Fencing Solutions

For livestock on rented land or when a robust, long-term solution is needed, the Gallagher Line Post system combined with High Tensile wire is ideal.

Inner Fence: Line Post System

The Line Post system, with 140 cm posts and High Tensile wire, offers resistance comparable to permanent wooden fencing but is easily movable. This 5-wire system uses fixed posts spaced 7 meters apart. Wire heights are 9.5 cm, 30 cm, 45.5 cm, 71 cm, and 95 cm. The lower wire near the ground requires a powerful energizer to manage grass contact and maintain optimal current flow.

Components:

Outer Fence: High Tensile System

The outer fence uses 1-meter blue plastic posts, driven approximately 50 cm into the ground, with posts spaced 10 meters apart. Wires are positioned at 20 cm and 45 cm. This outer fence provides an additional barrier. The distance between the inner and outer fences is 35 cm.

Components:

Permanent Fencing Solutions

For permanent protection against foxes, Gallagher's High Tensile system, combined with Insultimber posts, offers maximum security.

Inner Fence: Insultimber System

The inner fence is a 5-wire Insultimber system with fixed posts and droppers. Floating droppers keep the fence taut, reducing the need for intermediate posts. Wire heights are 90 cm, 65 cm, 45 cm, 30 cm, and 15 cm. The lowest wire near the ground requires a powerful energizer to manage grass contact and maintain optimal current flow. Outer Fence: High Tensile System

The outer fence is a High Tensile fence with 1-meter posts, driven approximately 50 cm into the ground, with posts spaced 10 meters apart. Wires are mounted at 20 cm and 45 cm. This outer fence provides an additional barrier for foxes. The distance between the inner and outer fences is 35 cm.
