Braun ThermoScan 6 IRT6515 Ear Thermometer
Model: IRT6515
Product Description
The Braun ThermoScan Ear thermometer has been carefully developed for accurate, safe, and fast temperature measurements in the ear. The shape of the thermometer probe prevents it from being inserted too far into the ear canal, which can hurt the eardrum. However, as with any thermometer, proper technique is critical to obtaining accurate temperatures. Therefore, read the instructions carefully and thoroughly.

Indications for Use / Intended Use
Braun ThermoScan® IRT6000 Series Infrared ear thermometers are indicated for the intermittent measurement of human body temperature by consumers of all ages in a home use environment. The hygienic lens filter is used as a sanitary barrier between the thermometer and the ear canal.
Warnings and Precautions
- Operating Range: 50 – 104 °F (10 – 40 °C). Avoid extreme temperatures (below –13 °F / –25 °C or over 131 °F / 55 °C) and excessive humidity (15-95% RH).
- Filter Use: Always use with a new, clean hygienic lens filter (LF 40) for accurate measurements. If accidentally used without a filter, clean the lens. Keep filters out of reach of children.
- Intended Use: For household use only. Not a substitute for physician consultation.
- Age Restrictions: Not intended for pre-term babies or small-for-gestational age newborns (birth to 4 weeks). Do not allow children under 12 years to take temperature unattended. Keep filters out of reach of children.
- Health Conditions: Temperature elevation may signal serious illness, especially in neonates, infants, elderly, frail, or immunocompromised individuals. Seek professional advice immediately.
- Nursing Mothers: Avoid taking temperature while or immediately after nursing a baby, as nursing can affect body temperature.
- Hypothermia: Not intended to interpret hypothermic temperatures. Contact a doctor if the device shows a temperature of 97.5°F (36.4°C) or less with atypical symptoms.
- Modifications: Do not modify the equipment without manufacturer authorization.
- Medications: Do not rely solely on temperature readings for individuals on antibiotics, analgesics, or antipyretics to determine illness severity.
- Choking Hazard: Contains small parts that can be swallowed or produce a choking hazard. Keep out of reach of children under 12 years.
How Braun ThermoScan Works
The Braun ThermoScan measures the infrared heat generated by the eardrum and surrounding tissues. When placed in the ear, it continuously monitors infrared energy. The ExacTemp® Stability Indicator ensures an accurate and stable temperature measurement.
Body Temperature & Fever Guidance
Normal body temperature is a range that varies by measurement site, age, and time of day. Ear temperatures accurately reflect core body temperature because the eardrum shares blood supply with the hypothalamus, the brain's temperature control center. Other measurement sites like axillary, oral, or rectal have different reliability and risks.
Color-Coded Fever Guidance:
The display backlight indicates temperature status:
Color Range | Reading | Meaning |
---|---|---|
Green | >96.3 °F - 99.4 °F ( >35.7 °C - 37.4 °C) | Normal |
Yellow | >99.4 °F - 101.3 °F ( >37.4 °C - 38.5 °C) | Fever |
Red | >101.3 °F ( >38.5 °C) | High fever |
Note: The backlight is white with no fever indication when temperatures are between 93.2°F and 96.3°F (34°C and 37.4°C).
How to Use Your Braun ThermoScan
- Remove the thermometer from the protective case.
- Press the [Power Button]. The display shows all segments during an internal self-check, then displays the last temperature taken for 5 seconds.
- Attach a new, clean hygienic lens filter. Insert the probe straight into the filter inside the box and pull out. The thermometer will not work unless a hygienic lens filter is attached. The thermometer is ready for measurement when the display shows the ready state.
- Fully insert the IRT probe into the ear canal, pointing towards the opposite temple and ensuring it aims at the eardrum, not the canal walls.
- Press and release the [Start Button]. The ExacTemp® Stability Indicator light pulses during measurement and remains solid for 3 seconds to indicate a successful reading. A long beep signals completion. Short beeps or a "POS" error message indicate incorrect positioning.
- The confirmation beep indicates an accurate measurement. The result is shown on the display as an oral equivalent.
- To repeat a measurement, go to step 3.
- For the next measurement, press the [Eject Button] to remove and discard the used filter, then attach a new, clean filter.
The thermometer turns off automatically after 60 seconds of inactivity or can be turned off by pressing the [Power Button]. The display will briefly show "OFF" before going blank.
Temperature-Taking Hints
- Always replace disposable hygienic lens filters to maintain accuracy and hygiene.
- Measure in the same ear for consistent readings. A measurement in the right ear may differ from the left.
- Ensure the ear canal is free from obstructions or excess earwax for an accurate reading.
- External factors can affect ear temperatures, including: poor probe placement, used hygienic lens filter, dirty lens, extreme room temperatures, or wearing a hearing aid.
- In cases of extreme room temperatures, wait 20 minutes before taking a temperature.
- Use the untreated ear if ear drops or other ear medications have been placed in the ear canal.
- If the individual has been lying down with one ear facing down on a pillow, use the ear that was facing upwards.
Last Reading Recall
The last temperature taken is stored in memory and will be automatically displayed for 5 seconds when the thermometer is turned on again.
Night Light Function
The thermometer includes a night light to illuminate the display in a dim environment. The light turns on when any button is pressed and stays on until the thermometer is inactive for up to 15 seconds, even after a temperature has been taken.
Changing Temperature Scale (°C / °F)
Your Braun ThermoScan is shipped with the Fahrenheit (°F) scale activated. To switch to Celsius (°C) or back:
- Ensure the thermometer is turned off.
- Press and hold the [Power Button]. After about 3 seconds, the display will show: °F / SET / °C / SET.
- Release the [Power Button] when the desired temperature scale is shown. A short beep confirms the new setting, and the thermometer turns off automatically.
Care and Cleaning
The probe tip is the most delicate part and must be clean and intact for accurate readings. If the thermometer is accidentally used without a hygienic lens filter, gently wipe the probe tip with a cotton swab or soft cloth moistened with alcohol. Ensure it is completely dry before attaching a new filter. If the probe tip is damaged, contact Consumer Relations.
Clean the thermometer display and exterior with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners. Never submerge the thermometer in water or any other liquid. Store the thermometer and hygienic lens filters in a dry location free from dust and contamination, away from direct sunlight.
Additional hygienic lens filters (LF 40) are available at most stores carrying Braun ThermoScan.
Replacing the Batteries
The thermometer is supplied with two 1.5V AA (LR06) batteries. Replace batteries when the [Battery Symbol] appears on the display. Open the battery compartment, remove old batteries, and insert new ones, ensuring correct polarity. Snap the battery door into place. Dispose of used batteries properly according to national or local regulations to protect the environment. Do not mix alkaline, standard, or rechargeable batteries.
Calibration
The thermometer is initially calibrated at the time of manufacture. Periodic re-adjustment is not required if the thermometer is used according to the instructions. Contact Consumer Relations if you question its accuracy at any time.
