Central Processing Unit (CPU)
This motherboard features an AMD AM4 socket designed for AMD Ryzen™ 2nd Generation, Ryzen™ with Radeon™ Vega Graphics, and Ryzen™ 1st Generation processors.
⚠️ Unplug all power cables before installing the CPU.
The AM4 socket has a different pinout from FM2+/FM2 sockets. Ensure you use an AM4-compatible CPU. The CPU fits in only one orientation. DO NOT force the CPU into the socket to prevent bending pins and damaging the CPU.
Installing the CPU
- Lift the CPU socket lever.
- Align the CPU's triangle marker with the socket's triangle marker and gently place the CPU into the socket.
- Lower the CPU socket lever to secure the CPU.
- Apply Thermal Interface Material (TIM) to the CPU heatsink and CPU before installing the heatsink and fan, if necessary.
Installing the CPU heatsink and fan assembly
Type 1 Installation: Follow the visual steps provided in the manual for Type 1 heatsink installation.
Type 2 Installation: Follow the visual steps provided in the manual for Type 2 heatsink installation. Remove only the screws and retention module; do not remove the plate on the bottom.
System memory
This motherboard has four DDR4 Dual Inline Memory Module (DIMM) sockets. The sockets are arranged as follows:
- Channel A: DIMM_A1 and DIMM_A2*
- Channel B: DIMM_B1 and DIMM_B2*
- You can install varying memory sizes in Channel A and Channel B. The system maps the total size of the lower-sized channel for dual-channel configuration. Excess memory from the higher-sized channel is mapped for single-channel operation.
- For optimal compatibility, install DIMMs with the same CAS latency, version, or date code (D/C) from the same vendor. Check with your retailer for correct memory modules.
- For system stability, use an efficient memory cooling system when installing four DIMMs.
- Refer to www.asus.com for the latest Memory QVL (Qualified Vendors List).
Recommended memory configuration
The manual illustrates recommended memory configurations for dual-channel operation, showing specific DIMM slot population.
Installing a DIMM
To install a DIMM:
- Open the retention clips on the DIMM socket.
- Align the DIMM notch with the socket key and press down firmly on both ends until the retention clips snap into place.
To remove a DIMM:
- Press down on the retention clips at both ends of the DIMM socket.
- Gently pull the DIMM straight up and out of the socket.
Chapter 2: BIOS information
The BIOS setup program allows you to update the BIOS or configure system parameters. Navigation keys and brief online help are provided.
