GARDENA smartsystem

smart Sensor

Art. 19040

Instructions for use

Important! Read the operating instructions carefully and keep them for future reference.

DANGER! Suffocation hazard! Small parts can be easily swallowed. The plastic bag poses a suffocation hazard to small children. Keep small children away during installation.

DANGER! Cardiac arrest! This product generates an electromagnetic field during operation. This field may, under certain circumstances, affect the functioning of active or passive medical implants. To exclude the risk of situations that could lead to serious or fatal injuries, persons with medical implants should consult their doctor and the implant manufacturer before using this product.

Do not use damaged products. Dispose of all parts immediately in accordance with regulations (see chapter 6. STORAGE "Disposal/Disposal of batteries"). Keep children away from damaged parts. Regularly check the product for damage. There is a tripping hazard. Position the sensor so that it is visible at all times. The product heats up when exposed to sunlight. Contact may cause minor burns. Ensure that the product is used only within the specified temperature range of –1 °C to +50 °C.

Batteries:

DANGER! Replace exhausted batteries. If the batteries are completely discharged, electrolyte may leak out. Do not use rechargeable batteries. Regularly check the batteries for damage. Do not use damaged batteries. Dispose of them in accordance with regulations (see chapter 6. STORAGE "Disposal/Disposal of batteries"). Keep children away from damaged batteries.

To prevent the sensor from falling due to weak batteries during long periods of absence, the batteries must be replaced within the specified period. The decisive factors are the current battery life and the probable duration of absence, which should not exceed a total of 6 months.

Information on use: The soil moisture sensor is equipped with a safety switch. If the batteries are exhausted, watering will occur with the set duration in the smart application. The spread of moisture in the soil after watering or rainfall is subject to a certain inertia. In the worst case, watering and rainfall may overlap until the desired soil moisture is reached.

2. FUNCTIONING

The sensor automatically measures the soil moisture in the root zone of plants and the ground temperature, and sends the measurement results to the gateway. (The values can be read via the GARDENA smart application.) If the batteries are exhausted and not replaced, the smart application will operate with the set program. Replace batteries (see 3. COMMISSIONING "Inserting batteries").

Control elements/Indicators:

3. COMMISSIONING

Inserting batteries:

Batteries are not included in the scope of delivery. The sensor can only operate with 2 x alkaline-manganese (alkaline) batteries type LR6 (AA) (Mignon). The operating life is approximately 6 months. Depending on the external temperature and the frequency of transmissions, the operating life may vary.

CAUTION! Rechargeable batteries must not be used!

1. Pull the cover ④ forward.

2. Pull the battery compartment cover ⑤ forward until it clicks, then pull the battery compartment cover upwards.

3. Insert batteries ⑦ into battery compartment ⑥. Pay attention to the polarity. The LED ① flashes green.

4. Press the battery compartment cover ⑤ back onto the battery compartment ⑥.

5. Slide cover ④ back onto the sensor. The connection mode is activated.

6. Ensure that the connection LED flashes green before proceeding.

7. Follow the instructions in the GARDENA smart application. If the connection is unsuccessful (no green LED), press the battery compartment cover ⑤ for about 10 seconds to restart the sensor.

Choosing the right location:

Correct location:

The sensor should be placed in the irrigation zone where it is exposed to the same climatic conditions (sun, wind, rain, etc.) as the plants whose condition is to be monitored. If using drip irrigation, place the sensor near a drip irrigation point. If you want to use the sensor in a pot, it should be at least 5 cm from the edge. If you want to use the sensor on a lawn, first remove the top layer before proceeding. If possible, position the sensor so that there are no obstructions between it and the gateway.

Incorrect location:

To avoid incorrect results due to waterlogging, the sensor should not be placed in depressions in the soil. When exposed to direct sunlight, please note that the measured temperature may differ from the actual temperature. When used in a pot, the sensor should be at least 5 cm from the edge of the pot.

CAUTION! Sensor damage from mower. The mowing height of the mower must be a minimum of 30 mm.

"Planting" the sensor:

CAUTION! The sensor only measures soil moisture correctly when the measurement zone completely touches the soil on all sides! There must be no air pocket in the soil at the measurement zone.

Removing soil:

1. Dig a funnel-shaped hole ⑧ in the soil with a minimum depth of 20 cm.

2. Loosen the removed soil ⑧ and remove any stones and thick roots.

3. Ensure that there are no metal objects near the sensor.

Soil preparation:

4. Moisten the soil if it is dry.

5. Return the loosened, moist soil ⑧ to the funnel-shaped hole without compacting it.

Positioning the sensor:

6. Insert the sensor into the soil ⑧ up to the lower edge of the horizontal part of the sensor head (the sensor must be pressed into the soil at least up to the min marking). The measurement zone 3 must completely touch the moist soil on both sides.

7. Lightly press the soil ⑧ around the measurement zone ③.

8. Water the area directly around the sensor with about 5 liters of water. It may take several hours for the sensor to register the actual soil moisture.

9. If placing the sensor in a lawn, cut the removed turf into pieces and place the pieces around the sensor.

4. MAINTENANCE

Control via the GARDENA smart application:

With the GARDENA smart application, you control all GARDENA smart products – from anywhere and at any time. The free GARDENA smart application can be downloaded from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. A GARDENA smart Gateway connected to the Internet is required for connection. All GARDENA smart products are connected via the application. Follow the instructions in the application for this purpose.

Sensor readings in the application:

Restoring factory settings:

The smart Sensor is reset to factory settings.

1. Remove cover ④.

2. Briefly press the battery compartment cover ⑤. Re-establishing connection (in case of unsuccessful connection).

- or -

Hold down the battery compartment cover for at least 10 seconds. The LED flashes green. Deletes the existing connection and allows re-establishing connection, e.g., with another gateway.

Guide for use:

To maintain soil moisture as constant as possible, it should be watered with short watering cycles and short watering times. This is especially true for plant boxes with watering times of < 5 minutes. The spread of moisture in the soil after watering or rainfall is subject to a certain inertia. In the worst case, watering and rainfall may overlap until the desired soil moisture is reached.

5. TECHNICAL MAINTENANCE

Cleaning the sensor:

Corrosive or abrasive cleaning agents must not be used. When moving the sensor, it should be cleaned.

1. Clean the sensor with clean water.

2. Clean the measurement zone ③ with a damp cloth (do not use solvents).

6. STORAGE

Taking out of operation:

The product must be stored in a place inaccessible to children.

1. Remove the batteries so they do not discharge (see 3. COMMISSIONING).

2. Store the sensor in a dry, protected place, safe from frost.

Disposal:

(according to Directive 2012/19/EC) The product must not be disposed of with ordinary household waste. It must be disposed of in accordance with applicable local environmental regulations. IMPORTANT! Dispose of the product at or through your local recycling collection point.

Disposal of batteries:

Dispose of batteries only when they are discharged. IMPORTANT! Hand in the batteries for recycling at or through your local collection point.
