TerraBloom Carbon Filters User Manual

Greetings from TerraBloom

Thank you for choosing TerraBloom carbon filters for your ventilation needs. This filter is designed to remove airborne odors, dust, and volatile organic compounds in residential and commercial applications. This filter must be operated with an inline duct fan of an appropriate airflow and pressure rating. TerraBloom recommends its EC-motor inline fans for a seamless experience.

For suggestions, questions, or comments, please contact TerraBloom directly at support@terra-bloom.com or through the contact form at www.terra-bloom.com. TerraBloom is located in sunny Southern California and replies to messages Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm PST.

The table below shows recommended airflow rates, which can be adjusted for your specific environment. Factors such as airborne pollutants, temperature, and humidity influence filter efficiency. In environments with high pollutant concentration or cold, humid conditions, the filter may need to be replaced sooner. To effectively eliminate odors, all air in a room should be replaced or scrubbed once per minute. The minimum fan airflow rate for odor control is determined by the room's air volume. For example, a 6ft x 4ft x 8ft room (192 cubic feet) requires a minimum fan airflow rate of 192 CFM.

Consider the pressure drop created by the filter when selecting a fan. TerraBloom filters have a pressure drop of 0.5 inches W.G. Refer to your fan's pressure curve to determine its CFM output at this pressure level to ensure it meets your space's minimum CFM requirement.

Application Tips

To ensure a longer lifespan and preserve odor absorption, use the filter in environments with relative humidity below 80% (ideally below 70%). High humidity causes carbon to absorb water, clump, and create uneven surfaces, allowing untreated air to pass through.

Two common methods for odor control:

Note on Static Pressure and Pressure Drops

To achieve optimal results, consider static pressure when selecting an inline duct fan. Each fan has a maximum pressure rating it can counteract to move air. The CFM rate stated on the fan is the "nominal" airflow rate, applicable only when static pressure is zero or no additional equipment is attached.

Attaching equipment like ducts, filters, or splitters introduces static pressure, creating an obstacle that reduces the final airflow. A pressure drop is the static pressure introduced by a filter or any attached equipment.

To find the precise airflow for an application, consult the fan's pressure curve, which shows CFM output at different pressure levels. Once you calculate the total pressure drop from the filter and all attached equipment, locate that pressure level on the curve to find the corresponding CFM output.

If pressure curves are unavailable, assume the carbon filter will reduce airflow by 30-40% from the fan's nominal airflow rate. Thicker carbon beds result in higher pressure drops.

Avoid using the carbon filter with weak duct "booster" fans, as they lack the power to counteract the filter's pressure drop and will result in significantly reduced output.

When using ducts to connect a fan and filter, factor an additional airflow reduction of 3% (smooth metal duct) to 7% (flexible ribbed duct) for every 25 feet of duct. 90° turns in ducting cause an additional 1%-4% reduction in airflow loss.

Installation

  1. Step 1: Inspect the filter upon arrival to ensure all parts are intact. Pierced, heavily dented, or crushed units may leak carbon and require replacement. Contact TerraBloom customer support if shipping damage has occurred. Due to prolonged shaking during transportation, your filter may have a residual amount of loose carbon particles in its packaging. Use a damp cloth to remove any loose particles before installing the filter.
  2. Step 2: Place one of the supplied cloth pre-filters onto your filter by pulling it over the filter's mesh walls. The pre-filter captures dust and large debris before they reach and clog the main filter.
  3. Step 3: Attach the filter to the fan by securing the connection with a metal duct clamp. If desired, a duct can be installed between the filter and the fan. [diagram showing filter attached to fan with clamp, with optional duct] OR [diagram showing filter attached to fan with clamp, no duct]
  4. Step 4: Suspend the filter over the canopy in your grow space. Verify that the mounting hardware used is rated for the filter's weight. Attach the fan so that air is pulled through the filter and outside of the grow tent. [diagram showing filter suspended over plants with fan attached, pulling air through]
  5. Step 5: As an alternative installation method, the filter can be placed outside the grow tent with the fan capturing air over the canopy and pushing it into the filter. To prevent clogging, ensure that leaves or large debris cannot become lodged into the fan and pushed against the inside wall of the filter. 6. Step 6: Machine wash your cloth pre-filters regularly to prevent dust and debris buildup around your filter walls. Air dry cloth pre-filters to prevent shrinkage. [diagram of washing machine]
