Thank you for purchasing the JOYO Vocal Lab R-16. This manual provides essential information for operating this product safely and effectively. Please read it carefully and keep it for future reference.
I. Safety Instructions
- Avoid applying excessive force to switches and controls.
- Clean the unit with a clean, dry cloth only. Do not use flammable substances like benzene or thinner.
- Do not place the unit in humid environments to prevent damage to internal circuits.
- The operating voltage is DC 9V. Do not exceed this voltage to avoid malfunction.
- A power adapter is not included and must be purchased separately. Ensure the adapter's polarity matches the unit's requirements.
- Turn on your amplifier only after powering on the Vocal Lab.
- Dispose of this product responsibly, following local regulations for electronic waste.

- 9-position vocal HARMONY with up to 2 harmonies, combined with 3 user-friendly vocal Reverb modes.
- 12 available Keys with a Maj/Min toggle switch for precise HARMONY.

III. Panel Layout
The JOYO Vocal Lab R-16 features a comprehensive panel with the following controls and connections:
- MIC OUT: Balanced output jack for processed vocals to PA systems or mixers.
- HARMONY 9-position toggle switch: Selects one of nine HARMONY effects.
- HAR.MIX knob: Adjusts the balance between dry vocal sound and HARMONY effect.
- MAJOR/MINOR toggle switch: Selects between Major and Minor key modes.
- Nixie tube display: Shows the selected Key. A dot at the bottom right indicates a sharp (#).
- MIC GAIN knob: Controls the input gain for the microphone. Features an overload indicator (Green: OK, Yellow: approaching overload, Red: overload). Adjust to stay within the green range.
- REVERB knob: Selects one of three reverb modes.
- MIC IN: XLR balanced input jack for microphones.
- GND/LIFT: Ground lift switch for balanced outputs.
- HARMONY Footswitch: Engages/disengages the HARMONY effect. The LED indicator shows status.
- HARMONY Footswitch Indicator: LED status indicator for the HARMONY effect channel.
- Key SELECT: Rotary encoder (pressable) for selecting and confirming the Key.
- REVERB Footswitch Indicator: LED status indicator for the REVERB effect channel.
- REVERB Footswitch: Engages/disengages the REVERB effect. The LED indicator shows status.
- 48V phantom power switch: Provides power for condenser microphones.
- INST.IN: 1/4" mono instrument input jack.
- MICRO USB: For firmware updates.
- AUX IN: 3.5mm stereo audio auxiliary input jack.
- DC 9V: Power input jack (requires 500mA).
- PHONES: 3.5mm stereo headphone jack for monitoring vocal, instrument, and AUX IN signals.
- CENTER SILENCER: Button to remove vocals from stereo audio sources when using AUX IN.
- Ambience light control switch: Controls the ambience light mode (SYNC, ALWAYS, OFF).
- Ambience light: Please refer to No. 23 for setting the ambience light mode.
IV. Connections Diagram
A diagram illustrates the connections for Guitar, MP3 player, Power Supply, Headphones, Microphone, Laptop, and Mixer to the Vocal Lab unit.
V. Operation
- Key and Harmony Selection: Use the encoder to select the song's Key to match the HARMONY. If your singing is out of tune, the HARMONY will follow your pitch. Keys C, D, E, F, G, A, B are available. The dot indicates a sharp (#), toggled by pressing the Key Select encoder. The Major/Minor switch adjusts the mode.
- Center Silencer: The "CENTER SILENCER" button can remove vocals from audio inputs, most effective for vocals centered in a stereo mix. It works by phase-canceling the center channel of a stereo signal.
- Footswitch Modes: You can set the footswitches to Latching (normal on/off) or Momentary (effect active only while pressed) by powering on the unit while holding one or both footswitches. A single LED flash on startup indicates Latching mode; four flashes indicate Momentary mode.
VI. Tone List (Harmony Effects)
Tone | Description |
---|---|
1. Unison | Adjusts MIC input vocal pitch and delays the HARMONY effect slightly for a unison effect. |
2. Low | A perfect 4th below. |
3. High | A perfect 3rd above. |
4. Low & High | A perfect 3rd above, and a perfect 4th below. |
5. Lower | A perfect 6th below. |
6. Higher | A perfect 5th above. |
7. Lower & Higher | A perfect 6th below, and a perfect 5th above. |
8. Low & Lower | A perfect 4th below, and a perfect 6th below. |
9. High & Higher | A perfect 3rd above, and a perfect 5th above. |
