Design and Interior
The Kia EV5 enters the competitive compact SUV segment in Europe, combining Kia's 'Opposites United' design philosophy with practical qualities and electric mobility innovations. It features a powerful, angular silhouette, a distinctive D-pillar, and Kia's signature 'Star Map' lighting graphics. The design is both striking and aerodynamic, complemented by 18-inch wheels on the base model and 19-inch wheels on the GT-line trim.
The cabin is designed for practicality. Rear seats can be folded completely flat to create a generous, level loading space of up to two meters. An extendable storage compartment in the center console and other organizational features make the EV5 suitable for both city driving and outdoor activities.
The interior offers a lounge-like experience with high seating comfort, including massage functions for the driver, four-way adjustable lumbar support, and seat heating and ventilation. Sustainable materials are used throughout, such as recycled PET plastic for seat covers and carpets, bio-foam in seat cushions, and BTX-free paint.
Performance and Range
The EV5 is built on the E-GMP platform with 400-volt technology. The long-range version with an 81.4 kWh battery offers a range of up to 530 kilometers (WLTP, with 18-inch wheels). It can charge from 10% to 80% in just 30 minutes at a high-speed charging station under optimal conditions.
Effective energy recuperation contributes to the EV5's range. The 'i-Pedal 3.0' system allows for one-pedal driving, and the 'Smart Regeneration System Plus' enhances energy efficiency and comfort by using navigation data to proactively adjust braking and speed, minimizing the need for brake pedal use.
A new generation of battery heating and cooling ensures efficient cabin warming and maintains optimal battery capacity even in low temperatures, guaranteeing reliable performance across various climates.
Advanced Features
- Bidirectional Charging: The EV5 supports 'Vehicle-to-Load' (V2L) functionality, acting as a powerful 220-volt power source (max. 3.6 kW) for external devices. It is also hardware-ready for 'Vehicle-to-X' (V2X) technologies, enabling V2H and V2G when infrastructure and regulations permit.
- Infotainment: The 'Connected Car Navigation Cockpit' (ccNC) features a panoramic display integrating a digital instrument cluster and navigation system (two 12.3-inch screens) and a 13.5-cm touchscreen for climate control. OTA updates and digital upgrades via the Kia Connect Store ensure the EV5 stays current with new features and services.
- Navigation: The system offers precise online navigation with live map information updated weekly.
- Climate Control: A three-zone climate control system provides maximum comfort for all occupants.
- Convenience Features: Includes a digital car key ('Digital Key 2.0'), fingerprint recognition, and an optional Harman/Kardon® premium sound system.
Safety and Driver Assistance
Safety is a top priority for European drivers. The EV5 features a highly rigid body structure and seven airbags. It is equipped with the latest driver assistance systems, including:
- Front Collision-Avoidance Assist 2.0: Monitors cross-traffic at intersections and helps prevent collisions with vehicles in adjacent lanes, including evasive steering maneuvers.
- Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist: Monitors rear traffic during lane changes or when parking and provides direct visibility into blind spots via side cameras.
- Highway Driving Assist 2.0: Features hands-on detection and can autonomously perform lane changes. It also uses navigation data to reduce speed before curves.
- Lane Following Assist 2.0: Keeps the vehicle centered in its lane, using the preceding vehicle as a reference point when lane markings are absent.
- Remote Smart Parking Assist 2.0: Detects suitable parking spaces and maneuvers the vehicle in and out autonomously, even when the driver is outside the vehicle.
