Anobviousapplicationiswithlegacyequipmentthatonlyoffersanalogoutputs.Afew simpleconnectionsareallthat'srequiredto covertthosesignalsintotheworldofAudioover-Ethernet.Whendeploying,maintaining, ormodifyingDantenetworkstheunitcan beausefultesttool,offeringasimple,highqualitymeansofcreatinga2-channelsignal source.Forpermanentapplicationsthere's noreasonwhyaModel5204can'treside withinanequipmentrackorbemounted, usingoptionalbrackets,underneathatable oron-airstudioset.Inaconferenceroom settingtheunitcanbepermanentlyconnectedtoaPoE-enabledEthernetport,readyto acceptasignalsourcefromvarioususerprovideddevices. LineInputA Usinga3-conductor("stereo")3.5mmjack, it'sasimplemattertoconnectunbalanced sourcestotheModel5204'slineinputA. Thesesignalswouldtypicallybeprovided bypersonalcomputers,smartphones,or personalaudiodeviceswhichhaveaverage (nominal)levelsintherangeof20to10 dBu.Onerotarycontrolisusedtoadjust theinputlevel,makingitasimpletaskto optimizetheconversionoftheinputanalog audiosourcetotheDanteoutput.Thelevel knobisapush-in/push-outtypewhichhelps preventinadvertentadjustment. LineInputB TheModel5204'slineinputBisdesignedfor usewithprofessionalline-levelanalogaudio signals.The2-channelinputiselectronically balanced,capacitor-coupled,andusestwo standard3-pinfemaleXLRconnectors.A singlerotarylevelcontrolallowstheinput sensitivityofbothchannelstobeadjusted. Usingthepush-in/push-outknobit'sa simplemattertoadjusttheinputcircuitry tomatchaverage(nominal)signallevels whichwouldtypicallybeintherangeof 0to+4dBu.Andwithamaximuminput levelof+24dButherewillalwaysbe sufficientheadroomfor"pro"audioperformance.Protectioncomponentsintheinput circuitryhelpensurereliabilityintoughfield applications. Summing(Mixing)oftheInput Signals Thetwochannelsassociatedwithlineinput Aandthetwochannelsassociatedwithline inputBaremixed(summed),senttoanalog-to-digitalconversioncircuitry,andthen transmittedovertheDantenetwork.The twosignalsassociatedwiththechannel1 (or"left")inputsarecombinedandsentout Dantechannel1.Thetwosignalsassociatedwiththechannel2(or"right")inputsare combinedandsentoutDantechannel2. (Thereisnoprovisionforcreatingamonauralsignalwhichistypicallynotanissueas otherconnectedDante-enabledequipment canusuallyperformsuchtasks.) WhilecompatiblewithstandardRJ45 plugs,etherCONallowsaruggedizedand lockinginterconnectionforharshorhighreliabilityenvironments.AnLEDdisplays thestatusofthenetworkconnection. TheModel5204'soperatingpoweris providedbywayoftheEthernetinterface usingthePower-over-Ethernet(PoE)standard.Thisallowsfastandefficientinterconnectionwiththeassociateddatanetwork. TosupportPoEpowermanagement,the Model5204'sPoEinterfacereportstothe powersourcingequipment(PSE)thatit's aclass3(midpower)device.AnLEDis providedtoindicatewhenpowerisbeing suppliedtotheModel5204.Notethatno provisionhasbeenmadetoallowanexternalpowersourcetobeconnected.However,iftheassociatedEthernetswitchdoes notprovidePoEcapabilityacommonlyavailablemid-spanPoEpowerinjector canbeutilized. DedicatedChargingPort (DCP) AuniqueresourceistheModel5204's dedicatedchargingport.Usingastandard USBtypeAreceptacle,theporthasa 5voltoutputwithamaximumcurrentof approximately1amp.Thisnominally 5wattoutputshouldbesufficienttorapidly chargeapersonalaudioplayer,smartphone,ortabletdevice.Anauto-detectfeaturesupportsdividermode,shortmode, and1.2V/1.2Vchargingmodes.Besides charging,theportcanallowaconnected devicetocontinuouslysendaudiotothe associatedDantenetworkwithoutrequiring anexternalpowersource.Notethatinthis situationinterfacingadevicewiththeModel 5204requiresseparatecables,oneforthe analogaudiosourceandoneforpowering/ charging. Onenoteofinterest:thededicatedchargingportderivesitspowerfromtheEthernet withPower-over-Ethernet(PoE)connection.WhiletheModel5204'saudioand datacircuitrytakesverylittleenergy,the dedicatedchargingportcansourceupto approximately5watts.Assuch,theModel 5204'sEthernetinterfacewillidentifyitself toupstreampower-sourcing-equipment (PSE),typicallyanEthernetswitchwith integratedPoE,asaPoEclass3powered device(PD). DanteAudio-over-Ethernet AudiodataissentfromtheModel5204 usingtheDanteAudio-over-Ethernetmedia networkingtechnology.AsaDante-compliantdevice,theModel5204'stwoaudio channelscanbeassignedtootherdevices usingtheDanteControllersoftwareapplication.Bitdepthsofupto24andsample ratesof44.1,48,88.2,and96kHzare supported.Twobi-colorLEDsprovidean indicationoftheDanteconnectionstatus. SystemComponents IncludedintheshippingcartonisaModel 5204Interfaceandaprintedcopyofthe userguide. EthernetConnection A100BASE-TXEthernetconnectionthat supportsPower-over-Ethernet(PoE)is requiredforModel5204operation.This oneconnectionwillprovideboththeEthernetdatainterfaceandpowerfortheModel 5204'scircuitry.A10BASE-Tconnectionis notsufficientanda1000BASE-T("GigE") connectionisnotsupportedunlessitcan automatically"fallback"to100BASE-TX operation.ForPoEswitch(PSE)power managementtheModel5204willenumerate itselfasaPoEclass3device. TheEthernetconnectionismadebywayof aNeutriketherCONprotectedRJ45connectorthatislocatedonthebackpanelof theModel5204.Thisallowsconnectionby wayofacable-mountedetherCONplugor astandardRJ45plug.TheModel5204's EthernetinterfacesupportsautoMDI/MDI-X sothatmostcablingimplementationswillbe correctlysupported. LineInputA LineinputAisintendedforconnection witha2-channel(stereo)unbalancedlinelevelanalogaudiosignalsource.Thiswill typicallybeassociatedwithconsumerand semi-professionaldevicessuchaspersonal audioplayers,AVequipment,andtablet andpersonalcomputers.Thesesignals willtypicallyhaveanominallevelinthe rangeof15to10dBu.DevicesareconnectedtolineinputAbywayofa3.5mm 3-conductorjacklocatedontheModel 5204'sfrontpanel.Asisstandardfor2channel(stereo)audiosignalspresenton thistypeofconnectorchannel1(left)is connectedtothejack'stiplead,channel2 (right)tothejack'sringlead,andthecommonconnectiontothejack'ssleeve. LineInputB LineinputBisintendedforconnectionwith twobalancedline-levelanalogaudiosignal sourcesassociatedwithprofessionalaudio andvideoequipment.Thesewillinclude devicessuchasaudioconsoles,video storageandplaybacksystems,wireless microphonereceivers,andaudiotesting equipment.Theaudioqualityissuchthat usinglineinputBforon-airbroadcastor streamingapplicationswouldbeappropriate.Thetwochannelsassociatedwithline inputBareanalog,electronicallybalanced, andcapacitorcoupled. TheModel5204providestwo3-pinfemale XLRconnectorsforinterfacingsignalswith lineinputB.Pin2onamatingconnector (3-pinmaleXLR)shouldbeconnectedas signal+(high),pin3assignal(low),and pin1ascommon/shield.Withanunbalancedsourceconnectsignal+(high)tothe pin2andsignal(low/shield)tobothpins 1and3. It'spossiblethatthedevicebeingpoweredand/orchargedisalsoservingasthe sourceofanalogaudioforlineinputA.In thiscasetwointerfacecableswillbeused tolinkthedevicewiththeModel5204. Dante Configuration SeveralModel5204'sDante-related parameterscanbeconfigured.These configurationsettingswillbestoredinnonvolatilememorywithintheModel5204's circuitry.Configurationwilltypicallybe donewiththeDanteControllersoftware applicationwhichisavailablefordownload freeofchargeatwww.audinate.com.VersionsofDanteControllerareavailableto supportWindows®andOSX®operating systems.TheModel5204usestheUltimo 2-input/2-outputintegratedcircuittoimplementtheDantearchitecture.However,only thetwotransmitter(output)channelsare utilized.Thisdictateswhichparameters canbeconfiguredandwhatchoicesare available. Thetwotransmitterchannelsassociated withtheModel5204'sDanteinterface mustbeassignedtothedesiredreceiver channels.WithinDanteControllera"subscription"isthetermusedforroutinga transmitflow(agroupofoutputchannels) toareceiveflow(agroupofinputchannels).Notethatasofthewritingofthis guidethenumberoftransmitterflows associatedwithanUltimointegratedcircuit islimitedtotwo. TheModel5204willsupportaudiosample ratesof44.1,48,88.2,and96kHzwith alimitedselectionofpull-up/pull-down values.TheModel5204canserveasthe clockmasterforaDantenetworkbutin mostcasesitwill"sync"toanotherdevice. TheModel5204hasadefaultDantedevicenameofST-M5204andauniquesuffix.ThesuffixidentifiesthespecificModel 5204thatisbeingconfigured(itrelatesto theMACaddressoftheUltimointegrated circuit).ThetwoDantetransmitterchannelshavedefaultnamesofCh1andCh2. UsingDanteControllerthedefaultdevice andchannelnamescanberevisedasappropriateforthespecificapplication. Operation AtthispointanEthernetconnectionwith Power-over-Ethernet(PoE)capability shouldhavebeenmade.Theunit'sDante configurationsettingsshouldhavebeen selectedusingDanteControllersoftware application.AtaminimumtheModel 5204'stwoDantetransmitterchannels shouldhavebeenroutedtoreceiver channelsonanassociateddevice.Analog Model5204UserGuide StudioTechnologies,Inc. InitialOperation TheModel5204willimmediatelybeginto functionassoonasaPower-over-Ethernet (PoE)powersourceisconnected.Atthis timetheUSBdedicatedchargingportwill becomefunctional.However,fulloperation maytakeupto20secondstobegin.Upon initialpowerupthefourstatusLEDslocatedonthebackpanelwillbegintolight.The meterLEDsonthefrontpanelwilllightina testsequence.AfterthemeterLEDscompletetheirtestsequenceonemeterLED associatedwithchannel1andonemeter LEDassociatedwithchannel2willbriefly lighttoindicatetheversionnumberofthe unit'sfirmware(embeddedsoftware).Once thatsequencehascompletedandthe Danteconnectionhasbeenestablished fulloperationwillbegin. Ethernet,PoE,andDante StatusLEDs FourstatusLEDsarelocatedbelowthe EthernetconnectorontheModel5204's backpanel.ThePoELEDwilllightgreen toindicatethatPower-over-Ethernet(PoE) associatedwiththeconnectedEthernet signalisprovidingoperatingpowerforthe Model5204.TheLINK/ACTLEDwilllight greenwheneveranactiveconnectionto a100Mb/sEthernetnetworkhasbeen established.Itwillflashinresponsetodata packetactivity.TheSYSandSYNCLEDs displaytheoperatingstatusoftheDante interfaceandassociatednetwork.The SYSLEDwilllightreduponModel5204 poweruptoindicatethattheDanteinterfaceisnotready.Afterashortintervalit willlightgreentoindicatethatitisreadyto passdatawithanotherDantedevice.The SYNCLEDwilllightredwhentheModel 5204isnotsynchronizedwithaDante network.Itwilllightsolidgreenwhenthe Model5204issynchronizedwithaDante networkandanexternalclocksource (timingreference)isbeingreceived.Itwill slowlyflashgreenwhentheModel5204is partofaDantenetworkandisservingas aclockmaster. HowtoIdentifyaSpecific Model5204 TheDanteControllersoftwareapplication offersanidentifycommandthatcanbe usedtohelplocateaspecificModel5204. Whenidentifyisselectedforaspecificunit theSYSandSYNCLEDsonthatunitwill slowlyflashgreen. Asignalpresentonchannel2(right)ofline inputAandasignalpresentonchannel2 oflineinputBwillcombine(mixtogether orsum)after("post")thetwolevelcontrols. Thiscombinedsignalisroutedtotheanalog-to-digitalconvertercircuitryandonto theDantetransmitter(output)forchannel 2.Butnotethatnomonauralversionofthe inputsignalsiscreated. USBDedicatedChargingPort Therearenospecialinstructionswhenusing thededicatedchargingport.Simplyconnect thedesireddeviceandthefunctionwilltypicallyautomaticallystart.Theonlylimitations willbewiththeport's5volt,1ampere(5 watt)maximumpowersupplycapability. TechnicalNotes UltimoFirmwareUpdate TheModel5204implementsDanteconnectivityusingtheUltimointegratedcircuit fromAudinate.This2-input/2-outputdevicecanbeupdatedbywayoftheModel 5204'sEthernetconnection.Asofthedate ofwritingthisguideit'snotevidentasto whetherornotnewerfirmwarewillever needtobeloaded. IdentifyingtheFirmware VersionNumber Aspreviouslydiscussedinthisguide, uponpowerupthemeterLEDsareused tobrieflydisplaytheversionnumberof theModel5204'sfirmware(embedded software).Thisinformationistypicallyonly necessarywhenworkingwiththefactoryonsupportissues.ThemeterLEDs willfirstgothroughadisplaysequence followedbyanapproximately1-second periodwheretheversionnumberwillbe indicated.ThetoprowofsevenLEDswill displaythemajorversionnumberwitha rangeof1to7.Thebottomrowofseven LEDswilldisplaytheminorversionnumber witharangeof1to7.RefertoFigure2for details.
