It's an amp with huge power reserves and insane capability that will laugh at pretty much any pair of speakers you can throw at it. Well, not literally, because it's not human and it can't laugh. But if it was, it would. Argh. You get it. Power. Big. Except Wotan isn't just about brute force...not with it's fully discrete, NexusTM differential topology with switchable feedback. And especially since Wotan features ForkbeardTM, Schiit's unique, multi-product control system. So yeah, we brought back big...and made it wayyyyy better! The following is required by the roughly 9,542 government agencies and regulations we have to comply with. If you have some common sense, they should seem pretty straightforward. In any case, read these instructions before proceeding farther, follow all instructions, and heed all warnings. Or else! 1. If you don't know how to install audio devices, get a qualified professional to help. 2. Never use this device near water, and clean only with a dry cloth. 3. Assure adequate ventilation, do not block any ventilation openings, or place near heat sources. 4. Use only the supplied power cord or suitable replacement. Route cords away from traffic areas and protect them from being pinched. Unplug the cord from the outlet if the apparatus is unused for a long period of time. 5. To prevent electric shock, do not use the plug with an extension cord, receptacle, or outlet unless blades can be fully inserted. 6. Refer all servicing to qualified service personnel. Service is required when the device has been damaged, including cord or plug damage, liquid has been spilled or objects have fallen into the device, the device has been exposed to rain or moisture, does not operate normally, or has been dropped. WARNING: TO REDUCE THE RISK OF FIRE OR ELECTRIC SHOCK, DO NOT EXPOSE THIS DEVICE TO RAIN OR MOISTURE. GETTING STARTED Wotan is heavy. Not like "so heavy you need reinforced concrete floors," or "this amp creates its own gravity," but probably heavier than you think. Wotan weighs over 50 lbs. Be careful when lifting and moving Wotan. Wotan runs warm. That means: · Don't stack Wotan directly on top of (or underneath) other components · Ensure there's plenty of ventilation, especially behind the amp · If you're putting Wotan in a cabinet, ensure at least 2" of free airspace all around the amp, and that the cabinet is open to the air on at least one side · If you're putting Wotan on the ground, thick carpet may impede airflow Also, if you like your house warm--as in, over 80 degrees F--don't be surprised if Wotan runs its fans more often. Wotan is designed for use in typical air-conditioned indoor temperatures. You can't "bridge" Wotan. This is a differential amplifier, which means both speaker terminals are "hot." This also means you can't use Wotan with speakers that have a common ground between both channels (this is very, very odd--basically, if there are no cables connecting your speakers together, you're safe). Fans, fans, fans, oh my! Don't panic. Wotan's fans are usually off. They'll only kick in when running at very high volume or into difficult loads. And they start slow, almost inaudibly. If you're using the Forkbeard module, plug it in to the slot in the back of the chassis and download and install the Forkbeard app. Check schiit.com/forkbeard for current supported platforms, or go directly to the Apple App Store on your device. 1 5 4 3 1 WOTAN 0A1234567 115VAC 30W 5 CONNECTIONS 26 1 Speaker Outputs. Connect your speakers here. Left goes to left, right goes to right. Easy! 2 Inputs. Connect your stereo inputs here, using either RCA cables or XLR cables. You can connect two separate inputs and switch between them with the front button, or with your Forkbeard remote. 3 AC Inlet. Plug the included heavy-duty 14ga power cord here (or any other power cord, 14 ga or better). 2 4 Power Switch. Up is on. Down is off. Feel free to leave the amp on all the time, and use the front button or Forkbeard to put the amp into ultra-low-power Standby mode. 5 Fans. Don't block these. Don't stick stuff in here. Pretty simple, right? 6 ForkbeardTM module port. Plug in the optional Forkbeard control module for instant power ouput, system health reporting, and full remote control 1 23 OPERATION 1 Input select. Press to change between the XLR and RCA inputs. 2 Standby select. Press this button to put Wotan in Standby mode. This reduces power consumption to only 1-2 watts. Press again to take Wotan out of Standby mode for normal use, which will take about 1 minute. 3 Feedback select. Press to turn off overall feedback and turn Wotan into a "no feedback" amp. Gain will increase in this mode, and damping factor will decrease; try both with your speakers to determine which works best for your system. Note: all controls are also available remotely via the Forkbeard module, using the Forkbeard app. Please visit schiit.com/ forkbeard for currently supported platforms and Forkbeard-specific information. FAQ I have flashing lights. Why? Wotan flashes its LEDs when it's first turned on, while it's measuring and self-checking for system health. It also does the same when coming out of Standby. No I mean I have lights and no sound. Aha. Wotan continuously self-monitors for all faults, including overcurrent, overtemperature, and DC. If it detects a fault, it'll flash the front LEDs. You should turn off the amp and check your system for faults, such as shorted speaker cables. How do I avoid faults? If you're using the optional Forkbeard module, you'll have real-time display of power output, overcurrent, over-temperature, and fan status. That's the best way to see what's going on with your system in real time. The fans aren't running! Correct. Wotan only runs its fans when it needs to, and it only runs them as fast as necessary, so most of the time the fans are silent, and only go to full speed when the amp is heavily stressed. The fans are spinning! If you've been cranking AC/DC at max volume into your 4-ohm Magneplanars for a long time, sure, yep, the fans are probably spinning. They'll also run if you're in a warm room or using very inefficient speakers. I have hum. Why? If you're getting hum from your speakers, you should look into ground loops. Wotan is a very quiet amplifier. There are commercial products that help mitigate ground loops if you have one in your system. No I mean I hear hum from Wotan. A small amount of transformer hum is normal in super-high-powered amps, especially ones with two big transformers like Wotan. It shouldn't be audible from your listening chair. WARRANTY Schiit Audio warrants to the original purchaser that this product shall be free from defects in material and workmanship for five (5) years from the date of purchase. If a defect covered by this warranty occurs during this period, Schiit Audio will repair the defective product, free of charge. Date of purchase will be based on customer receipts, otherwise date of manufacturing will be used. If you believe you need warranty service, contact us first. Schiit Audio products sent back to us without a Return Authorization (RA) will be returned to the sender without repair. To contact us and obtain an RA, email info@schiit.com. Warranty Limitations. This warranty shall not apply if a product: (a) is modified or tampered with; (b) is damaged by negligence, accident, unreasonable use, or other causes unrelated to defective materials or workmanship, or (c) has had the serial number altered or removed. Any implied warranties, including warranties of merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose, are hereby limited in duration to the warranty period of 5 years. In no event shall Schiit Audio be liable for consequential or incidental damages resulting from the breach of any implied or expressed warranties. Some states do not allow these limitations, so they may not apply to you. You may also have other rights which vary from state to state or province to province.
