GENERAL SAFETY RULES

WARNING! Read all safety warnings and all instructions. Failure to follow the warnings and instructions may result in electric shock, fire and/or serious injury.
Safety is a combination of common sense, staying alert and knowing how your item works. The term "power tool" in the warnings refers to your mains-operated (corded) power tool or battery-operated (cordless) power tool.
SAVE THESE SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS.

WORK AREA SAFETY
1. Keep work area clean and well lit. Cluttered or dark areas invite accidents.
2. Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases or dust. Power tools create sparks which may ignite the dust or fumes.
3. Keep children and bystanders away while operating a power tool. Distractions can cause you to lose control.
ELECTRICAL SAFETY
1. Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never modify the plug in any way. Do not use any adapter plugs with earthed (grounded) power tools. Unmodified plugs and matching outlets will reduce risk of electric shock.
2. Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces such as pipes, radiators, ranges and refrigerators. There is an increased risk of electric shock if your body is earthed or grounded.

DANGER: CARBON MONOXIDE Using a plate compactor indoors CAN KILL YOU IN MINUTES. Plate compactor exhaust contains carbon monoxide (CO). This is a poison gas you cannot see or smell. If you can smell the plate compactor exhaust, you are breathing CO. But even if you cannot smell the exhaust, you could be breathing CO. NEVER use a plate compactor inside homes, garages, crawl spaces, or other partially enclosed areas. Deadly levels of carbon monoxide can build up in these areas. Using a fan or opening windows and doors does NOT supply enough fresh air. ONLY use a plate compactor outside and far away from windows, doors, and vents. These openings can pull in plate compactor exhaust. Even if you use a plate compactor correctly, CO may leak into the home. ALWAYS use a battery-powered or battery-backup CO alarm in the home. If you start to feel sick, dizzy, or weak after the plate compactor has been running, move to fresh air RIGHT AWAY. See a doctor. You may have carbon monoxide poisoning.
WARNING: The exhaust from this product contains chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm.
WARNING: Do not operate the plate compactor near open flame or flammable materials. This plate compactor may emit highly flammable and explosive gasoline vapors, which can cause severe burns or even death if ignited. A nearby open flame can lead to explosion even if it isn't directly in contact with gasoline. Do not smoke near the plate compactor.
WARNING: Do not use in rainy or wet conditions. Do not allow children or non-qualified persons to operate the plate compactor.

8. Once the engine has started, slowly return the choke lever all the way

to the "OPEN" position.

9. Allow the plate compactor to run for several minutes before increasing the speed using the throttle.
10. Move the throttle lever to the "MAX" position to engage the plate.

Fig. 8

This plate compactor is designed for compacting loose, granular soils,

gravel, and paving stones. It is intended to be used in confined areas and

1

areas next to structures such as walls, curbs, and foundations.

When using the plate on paving stones, attach a pad to the bottom of the plate to prevent chipping or grinding the stones' surfaces. A special polyurethane pad (Item no. 56035-047) designed for this purpose is available as an optional accessory and can be purchased at www.wenproducts.com or by calling 1-847-429-9263 (M-F 8-5 CST).

This plate compactor is not recommended for compacting cohesive soils with heavy clay content.

Run the engine at full throttle and allow the plate to pull itself along at its normal speed. When operating on an incline it may be necessary to assist the plate by pushing it forward slightly. When operating downhill, hold the plate back slightly if it begins to pick up speed. Depending on the material being compacted, three or four passes are recommended to achieve the best compaction.

While a certain amount of moisture in the soil is necessary, excessive moisture may cause soil particles to stick together and prevent good compaction. If soil is extremely wet, allow it to dry somewhat before compacting.

If the soil is so dry that it creates dust clouds during operation, some moisture should be added to the ground material to improve compaction. This will also reduce service to the air filter. For compacting asphalt, use a water tank to wet the asphalt and the underside of plate. This will prevent asphalt material from sticking and reduce the frequency of needing to service the air filter. Two passes are usually sufficient enough to ensure good compaction.

WARNING! DO NOT operate the plate on concrete or on extremely hard, dry, compacted surfaces. The plate will jump rather than vibrate and could damage both the plate and the engine.

12

OPERATION
To avoid injury, keep hands, fingers, and feet away from the compactor base. Grip the handle of the compactor firmly with both hands. Adjust the throttle lever between its "MIN" to "MAX" position, depending on the desired vibration speed.
IMPORTANT! The plate compactor should not be used for more than two hours at a time without any breaks to cool down, as the heat of operation may cause the lubricant in the bearings to liquefy, which could leak out and cause the vibrating assembly to seize or break. Let the compactor rest every hour in very hot (above 90º F) temperatures.
The handle can be adjusted to both sides to aid in turnarounds in tight spaces, but the compactor only travels in one direction. The direction of travel is indicated on p. 8 and on the label on the belt cover.
Always keep a safe distance away from the edge of ditches and avoid any actions that may cause the plate compactor to topple over.
Always ascend slopes carefully in a direct path. Back up slopes to prevent the plate compactor from toppling back onto the operator.
IMPORTANT! At this point the user should be familiar with the procedures. If you have not yet read the previous sections, go back and read it now.
STEP 1 - CHECK THE OIL
Oil consumption is normal during plate compactor usage. The plate compactor is equipped with a low-oil shutoff to protect it from damage. The oil level in the engine should be checked before each use to ensure that the engine crankcase contains sufficient lubricant. If oil level is low, refer back to "Plate Compactor Preparation" on p. 9.
STEP 2 CHECK THE FUEL LEVEL
Before starting the plate compactor, check to see that there is sufficient gasoline in the fuel tank. The fuel gauge on top of the plate compactor will indicate the fuel level in the tank. Add gasoline if necessary but leave sufficient room in tank for expansion. If gasoline is low, refer back to "Plate Compactor Preparation" on p. 10.
WARNING: RISK OF EXPLOSION. HIGHLY FLAMMABLE: This plate compactor may emit highly flammable and explosive gasoline vapors, which can cause severe burns or even death, if ignited. A nearby open flame can lead to explosion even if not directly in contact with gasoline.
· Do not operate near open flame, heat, or any other ignition source. Do not smoke near the plate compactor. · Always operate on a firm, level surface. · Always turn the plate compactor OFF before refueling. Allow the unit to cool for at least 2 minutes before
removing the fuel cap. Loosen the cap slowly to relieve pressure in the tank. · Do not overfill the fuel tank. Gasoline may expand during operation. Do not fill to the top of the tank. Allow
for expansion. Always check for spilled fuel before operating. · If fuel spills, move the plate compactor at least 30 feet away from the spill and wipe clean any spilled fuel
before starting the engine. · Empty the fuel tank before storing or transporting the unit.
13

OPERATION
STOPPING THE PLATE COMPACTOR
1. Move the throttle lever to the "MIN" position to disengage the compactor. 2. Turn the fuel valve to the "OFF" position. Let the engine run until all fuel in the carburetor is consumed and the engine shuts down automatically. 3. Turn the engine switch to the "OFF" position. FOR EMERGENCY SHUTDOWNS, move the throttle to the idle position and turn the engine switch OFF.
WARNING! Allow the plate compactor to cool off for several minutes before touching areas that become hot during use.
CAUTION! Allowing gasoline to sit in the fuel tank for long periods of time can make it difficult to start the plate compactor in the future. Never store the plate compactor for over two weeks with fuel in the fuel tank. If sitting more than a month, drain the carburetor.

MAINTENANCE
Proper routine maintenance will help prolong the life of the machine. Please perform maintenance checks according to the schedule below. If there are any questions about the maintenance procedures listed in this manual, please call 1-847-429-9263 M - F 8 - 5 CST. It is best practice to drain your carburetor after every use. Always drain before storage. Do not store the plate compactor with fuel inside the tank for more than 2 weeks. This will cause the carburetor to clog, and it will need to be disassembled and cleaned before the next use. Run the plate compactor for 15 minutes a month to maximize its lifespan. Refer to the next page for drainage procedures.
CAUTION! Never perform maintenance operations while the plate compactor is running.

MAINTENANCE

CLEANING THE PLATE COMPACTOR
Never clean the plate compactor when it is running! If the plate compactor becomes dirty, clean the exterior with a damp cloth, a soft brush, or a vacuum / pressurized air.
CHECKING THE OIL
Check the oil level of the engine according to the Recommended Maintenance Schedule. The engine is equipped with an automatic shutoff to protect it from running with low oil pressure. The engine should be checked before each use for proper oil level. This is a critical step for proper engine maintenance.

FILLING CRANKCASE WITH OIL
1. Make sure the plate compactor is on a sturdy, flat surface. Tilting the plate compactor to assist in filling the oil will cause oil to flow into engine areas and may cause damage. Keep the plate compactor level!
2. Remove the oil filler cap or dipstick (Fig. 9 - 1) from the engine.

Fig. 9 1

3. Using a funnel, add the appropriate type and amount of oil into the crankcase. Fill the crankcase to the upper fill line so you can visually see the oil coming halfway up the oil fill threads (Fig. 10).

4. Check for oil leaks. Reinstall the oil dipstick before starting the engine.
CHANGING THE OIL
Change the oil when the engine is warm. This will allow for complete drainage. Change the oil more often if operating under heavy load or high ambient temperatures. It is also necessary to drain the oil from the crankcase if it has become contaminated with water or dirt. The oil capacity of the engine in this plate compactor is 20 fl. oz (0.6 L). Add oil when the oil level is low.

1. Place a container underneath the engine to catch oil as it drains.
2. Use an adjustable wrench or 12mm combination wrench to hold the flats on the oil drain extension tube. Use a 10mm wrench or socket to unscrew the oil drain plug (Fig. 11 - 1). Allow all the oil to drain from the engine.

Fig. 11

3. Reinstall the oil drain plug and tighten with a 10mm socket or wrench.
NOTE: Never dispose of used motor oil in the trash or down a drain. Please call your local recycling center or auto garage to arrange oil disposal.
DRAINING THE CARBURETOR
1. Turn the fuel valve to "OFF".

1 Fig. 12

2. Locate the drain screw (Fig. 8 - 1) on the carburetor bowl. Prepare a

pan, jar, or other approved gasoline storage container to catch the fuel

that will leak out.

1

3. Loosen the drain screw and allow the fuel to drain completely. When it is done draining, re-tighten the drain screw.

MAINTENANCE

AIR CLEANER MAINTENANCE
Routine maintenance of the air cleaner helps maintain proper air flow to the carburetor. Check that the air cleaner is free of excessive dirt.
1. Remove the air cleaner cover (Fig. 13 - 1). Remove both elements and inspect them for holes or tears. Replace damaged elements.
2. Tap the paper element (Fig. 13 - 2) lightly to remove excess dirt. Replace the paper element if it appears heavily soiled.
3. Wash the foam element (Fig. 13 - 3) in solution of mild detergent and warm water. Rinse thoroughly in clean water. Allow element to dry thoroughly. Soak element in clean engine oil and squeeze out excess oil.
SPARK PLUG MAINTENANCE
The spark plug is important for proper engine operation. A good spark plug should be intact, free of deposits, and properly gapped. To inspect the spark plug (Torch F6TC (NGK BP6ES)):
1. Pull on the spark plug boot (Fig. 14 - 1) to remove it.
2. Unscrew the spark plug (Fig. 15 - 1) from the plate compactor using the spark plug wrench included with this product. .
3. Visually inspect the spark plug. If it is cracked or chipped, discard and replace with a new spark plug of the same model (Torch F6TC (NGK BP6ES)).
4. Measure the plug gap with a spark plug gauge (Fig. 16). The gap should be 0.7-0.8mm (0.028 - 0.031 in).
5. If you are re-using the spark plug, use a wire brush to clean any dirt from around the spark plug base and then re-gap the spark plug.
6. Screw the spark plug back into its place on the plate compactor using the spark plug wrench. Do not over-tighten spark plug. Recommended tightening of spark plug is ½ to ¾ of a turn after spark plug gasket contacts spark plug hole, or 15 ft-lbs (20 Nm). Reinstall the spark plug boot.

MAINTENANCE

DRAINING THE FUEL TANK

Clean the fuel tank each year or before storing the plate compactor for

extended periods of time. To drain the fuel tank and carburetor:

1

1. Turn the fuel valve (Fig. 17 - 1) to the "OFF" position.

2. Remove the fuel line (Fig. 18 - 1) between the fuel valve and carburetor.

CAUTION! A small amount of fuel may leak from the hose during removal.
3. Attach a fuel line (not included with the plate compactor) to the exposed end of the fuel valve. 4. Position the fuel line into an appropriate container and open the fuel valve allowing fuel to flow into the container. 5. Once the fuel is drained, shut off the fuel valve. 6. Start and run the engine until the fuel runs out. 7. Unscrew the gas tank cap from the gas tank. 8. Remove the fuel filter cup (Fig. 19 - 1) located inside. 9. Empty the fuel filter cup of any fuel and clean. 10. Reinstall the fuel filter cup. 11. Screw the gas tank cap back onto the gas tank. 12. Store the emptied gasoline in a suitable place.
CAUTION! Do not store fuel for more than 3 months.
DRAINING THE FUEL TANK THROUGH THE CARBURETOR
1. Turn fuel valve (Fig. 17 - 1) to the "ON" position. 2. Loosen the drain screw (Fig. 20 - 1) from carburetor. Be sure to have a vessel prepared to catch the fuel that will flow out. 3. Ensure that all the fuel has left the tank, fuel line, and carburetor. 4. Tighten the drain screw. 5. Turn the fuel valve to the "OFF" position.

MAINTENANCE
CLEANING THE SPARK ARRESTOR
1. Let the engine and muffler cool completely.
2. Remove the two Philips-head screws (Fig. 21 - 1) and the deflector cover (Fig. 21 - 2).
3. Use a wire brush to clean the spark arrestor screen (Fig. 22 - 1).
LUBRICATING THE VIBRATING ASSEMBLY BEARINGS
Check the vibrating assembly bearings every 50 hours (more often if the plate compactor is used heavily or used in high temperatures) and add more grease to the bearings if necessary. Use an NLGI #2 EP lithiumbased grease. For detailed instructions on how to maintain the vibrating assembly, please visit the link below, or scan the QR code:

STORING THE PLATE COMPACTOR
If the unit is being stored for short periods of time (30 to 60 days), then when taking the unit out of storage, add gasoline and fuel stabilizer in the proper ratio to the tank until the tank is full.
NOTE: Filling the tank reduces the amount of air in the tank and helps reduce deterioration of fuel. Run the engine for 5 10 minutes allowing stabilized fuel mixture to circulate through the carburetor.
When storing the plate compactor for extended periods of time: · Drain the fuel tank and the carburetor. · Change oil. · Do not obstruct any ventilation openings. · Keep the plate compactor in a cool dry area.
When transporting plate compactor: · Tighten fuel cap. Drain the fuel tank if possible. · Keep the plate compactor upright. Never place plate compactor side down. Doing so will make it difficult to start.
CAUTION! Never place any type of storage cover on the plate compactor while it is still hot.
